I'm using -R Verbatims - can this cause freezing?

Another newbie question. Somewhere along the line, I misread something (in my owner's manual) and thought my stand alone DVD player had to have -R.
I got my manual out and looked again. It says to use +R. So - my question is, can using the -R then be the culprit of the freezing and pixilation? (I hope that's all it is, easy to correct for future back ups).
Thanks in advance for any help.

Go with the owner's manual, Use the +R and booktype the disk to DVD-ROM. should play fine. Verbatim seem to burn great at 8 or 12X.

Thank you blivetNC for your help, I appreciate your time!
I apologize - but I don't know what booktyping is. I did a search before posting this and admit to being more confused than ever.
I've been following various guides to copy the DVDs (Scuba Pete's, Alkohol, bbmayo) and I don't recall seeing instructions on booktyping?
Any help or even pointing me to an existing thread is very much appreciated. Thank you!
(Nero came installed, but I haven't used it yet. I forgot to list that above, I don't know if that would help with this? I really AM a newbie.)

You're using dash,but the stand alone player specs call for plus?
That toshiba player is recognizing your dash backups,therefore it will play the dash format.You just have simple playback issues which can easility be fixed.
Does that toshiba player have a lot of wear and tear on it?
What's the firmware version on that samsung drive?
Try 8x and see how that toshiba reacts to it.
Keep track of where those freezing issues occur on that toshiba. Then play that same backup on your pc using the samsung DVD-RW drive. See how it handles that same area during playback.
Another possibility:
Try another burn engine. You have Nero,just set it to autoburn after encoding with dvd shrink:
Shrink/edit/preferences/File-I/O: Make sure box is ticked for enable burn with Nero.
Now when you click the backup tab for DVD Shrink,Select backup target: You want your burner listed there,as well as a check mark for burn with Nero. OK and you should be set.
That toshiba may not like:
The speed it was burned
Burn engine-and they all do vary a little.
Maybe a dirty laser lens-if it has a ton of use in the past.
Harddrive was fragmented during the backup.
Maybe you multi-tasked during that backup?
Paper/sticker labels.
And a ton of other possibilities.
You just need to verify those problematic backups using the drive that produced them.See how they look on that samsung drive.

Keep track of where those freezing issues occur on that toshiba. Then play that same backup on your pc using the samsung DVD-RW drive. See how it handles that same area during playback. * The Toshiba freezes up (generally) around the 9-15 minute mark. I took 2 of the DVDs that froze and played them in the DVD-RW drive and they played beautifully - no freezing. I fast forwarded to the same spot and they played fine.

Dvd-r can cause freezing. If you have a newer model computer Use the +r's it should automaticlly change the booktype from DVD+R to dvd-rom. You can't change the booktype on DVD-R. When you buy a dvd in the store the booktype is dvd-rom

THank you veeman51 ~ I want to buy some more DVDs, so I'll try the +R and see how they work. Along with saugmon's advice - hopefully I'll be good to go.
My computer is Gateway, model GT 4015E (we just bought it in Feb. at Costco, if that helps).

The samsung drive plays them perfect?
It should.Something else is wrong-which is usually the case when using quality media. That backup is ok,and the samsung burner verified it with a perfect playback.
Next comes stand alone players. They do have harder times reading backups. If it was a format issue,then you would have gotten some sort of: No disc/Dirty disc/Wrong format/Or wrong region error.
See if you can play that disc in some other stand alone players of friends or family members and see how their players react to them,mainly in the area that they freeze.
Try that new batch of verbatim,you may have gotten a hold of some bad ones,which can happen to any brand of media.
You ran a disc cleaner and same issues. I consider those lens cleaning discs as a last resort,before stand alone player replacement. Since you still have issues after the cleaning,something else is wrong.Your toshiba is sensitive to something about your backup.
Mult-tasking can cause playback issues. Programs like DVD Shrink and Nerorecode2 can max out your processor during the analyzing and encoding phases.
Firmware may have to be update. Firmware is the programming for your burner. I controls the writing strategy,so it tells your drive how to burn your media.There may be a newer update for it to fix past issues.
Try this free program to find the FW version of your drive:

Actually flashing is easy. Download and follow the instructions. Don't have anything else running when you update the firmware. Don't do it if you fear a power outage. Stopping or interfering is where a problem arises. Once you start the execution, it usually takes only a minute or so for the flash to be done. So, it's download, open, and run. Not much to it. If you can't do it, find someone who can or go to the bookstore and get a book on PCs. Sounds like a course in basics would give you a jump start.
As for DVD Identifier, you download it, install it, put one of the DVDs you're using in the burner drive, run the DVD Identifier program, copy and post the info page here.
On multitasking, if you get errors, don't do it. If error free you can try it. If the errors come back, you know that multi tasking shouldn't be done. A lot depends on system resources (i.e. RAM and CPU capacity). Do you have a big, fast PC or an economy model?

@brobear ~ I apologize for taking so long to reply, it was a long day. Thank you for your clarification of flashing, I feel better now about doing it now if I should. Will definitely ask my husband to sit in on that session however :) I did go to the Firmware link you provided in your post above, but I honestly don't know what it all means, if there is an update or if my burner is up to date. I will have to learn more about that part first. Is there a "dummy's guide" that starts from square one perhaps? I don't expect everyone to do this work for me, I am happy to search and read, but honestly sometimes (okay, most times) I'm not sure what to search "for".

From DVD Identifier, the ID info is the part in the upper display box. When you put the disc in the drive and click Identify, it identifies the DVD manufacturer code on the DVD. Make sure the drive is the one selected in the software if using multiple drives. I used my HP 740i(B) and I have Taiyo Yuden media.
Hopefully media or a firmware update handles your problem. Before buying any new equipment, I'd check to see if the same problem occurs with other players. Try a friend of family members player. Are you experiencing the same problem when you play it back on both the PC and the standalone player?
Do you have any software that will identify the firmware version of your drive?
Believe it or not, under the "For Dummies" titles, I've had a few PC books in the past. Those texts simplify things for beginners. Even those with experience can't remember everything. You might want to visit the bookstore and check out some books. As you know, we're always willing to help as we can here at AD.

I hate to even say this, but I don't know how to copy a screen shot. I just googled it and learned how to copy it into paint, but that's as far as I got.
I went ahead and copied a movie onto one of the new Verbatim +R and my Toshiba DVD player will not even read it. I burned it with Nero at 4X. That's as far as I've gotten - time to call it a night. I think I may dream about carefully positioning the Toshiba behind the rear wheel of husband's F350...

Before we get drastic, lets do a check or 2. First of all, the needed info from DVD Identifier is just the manufacturer info. Verbs are usually good, but let us know what you have anyway. Unique Disc Identifier and the Manufacturer Name are sufficient, adding if it's 8X +R or whatever saves some time. It's easier to type that info than go through a screen capture. I only do screen captures because I have software that makes it easy.
Since you have Nero, lets use that to find your firmware version.
Open the toolkit in Nero
Open infotool
Select the Drive tab
Make sure the burner is selectied in the box at the top.
The firmware info is on the top right (circled in the image below).
What is your firmware version?

@veeman51...DVD-R do not cause freezing...where on earth did you get that from? 99% of my back-ups are on DVD-R and none of them freeze.
@DebB..i think your problem lies in your choice of burning program...try another program..i had that problem when i first started out..the back-ups would play fine on my player but on my friend's player it would pause & stop at times.Changed the entire program i used to do the movie with...problem solved.So try that and see how it goes.

I can do that! Here's the info from DVD Identifier (on the Verbatim -R):

Then you posted, "adding if it's 8X +R or whatever saves some time."
My disc identification doesn't list as much information as yours does. It lists only 4 items:

Manufacturer ID:
Blank Disc Capacity:
(However, when I identify one of the new Verbatim +R, then I get all the info as you show above).

Oh - I went to Walmart yesterday to get their 'cheapy' DVD player and they were out of them. A neighboring store has some in stock, but I guess I was hoping I'd try the new Verbatim +R and they would magically work (which they didn't)

if it's Nero 6, let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar.
if it's Nero 7, let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\Core\NeroHistory but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '5C80' or similar.

@movies27 ~ I'm sorry - I didn't see your post earlier. Thank you for your input. That is what I'm trying. I have always used DVD Decrypter to (decrypt and) burn. Now I'm trying out Nero. Nero sure seems to be a lot faster and I hope it will solve the problem.

- a-ha, CDRALW2K.SYS is part of Roxio. try uninstalling Roxio (doesn't always play well with Nero, a lot of ppl find..), then you might need to fully remove using Roxio Zapper - http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Roxio-Zap.shtml

Thank you creaky ~ I'd like to ask...I searched on Google and it appears Roxie is some sort of DVD burning program?
Can I assume this can installed on our computer - I know I didn't install it.
I'm just wondering what it is, and I assume it's not necessary and causing trouble (after searching here for 'roxio') and I will not miss it (?) {hard to miss something I suppose that I never knew was even there}

I went to "Add or Remove Programs" and don't "see" it there as 'Roxio'. Is it under another name perhaps?

I was able to play 4 problem discs at my neighbor's just now. 2 Verbatim +R that my player wouldn't read, and 2 Verbatim -R that froze up on my player - and their player played them all just fine.
Can I assume then that I should get a new DVD player?
Also, can someone point me to directions or help me with uninstalling Roxio? I called Gateway tech support and they cannot help me with this because it's a "how to" issue.
I found the files when I did a search, but they don't appear (to my eye) in the add/delete program, so I don't know how to go about uninstalling it. I've searched here and using Google, but haven't found the answer.

If you need a pretty decent,el cheapo player, check walmart out for the magnavox mwd 200f. Runs about $32,and plays everything from my benqs-plus/dash/booktyped dvd-roms/and dual layers.If it doesn't,they have a good exchange policy.
I'd imagine after you download roxizapper,run it on the harddrive that contains those roxio files-in case you have dual hds.. It should hunt them down and rid them?
