They both seem to be excellent! Should have resulted in very high quality scores.

I am burning verbs+r @ 16x speed with my external sony burner. The quality scores were 98 and 99 respectively. I figured they were good but I have no idea what 'pi' or jitter or pif errors are. Hoping someone could tell me what those mean.

PI means Parity Inner, while PO means Parity Outer. The "magic numbers" if you will are 280 for PI and 32 for PO. As long as your scans don't show large areas of the disc exceeding these numbers your burn is good.
I can't vouch for the accuracy of the scan here, but from those numbers it looks like an excellent result to me.

no prob creaky - thanks Doc

I am just wondering why a majority of people in here are afraid to burn at 16x. Is it because they have older burners or just old school and are afraid to try 16x or what? I havent had a Coaster in 250 burns and are all 97+ in quality score.

it's taken me long enough to get 2 burners that will do 8x reliably. i did a couple 16x burns the other day and one of the discs turned out crap, whereas at 8x i've had (since i've uninstalled the LG 4167B that could only do 4x) 100% success for a few weeks, prior to that, endless perfect results at 4x. For me 16x is not worth the risk, it really did take me a while to budge from 4x and whilst 8x is a recommended speed, 16x is just not worth the risk for me; plus it takes the same amount of time as 8x so there's no contest. i just did a couple 16x burns for a test, for this - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/330512 - in fact that's the thread where one of the 16x burns turned to crap (it was a CMC-made Verbatim disc - Pah!!)

Maybe in time i'll try a few more at 16x, but i'm happy enough using Nero's multiple recorders feature - finally having 2 drives storming along at 8x concurrently is more than good enough for me :)

at the end of the day the way i see it, 4.3GB to a flimsy disc at 8x in 6mins or whatever it is, is pretty damn impressive, no matter how much faster technology gets.

True about the dvd taking only 6 minutes being impressive. I guess I just bought my burner a few months ago and just started out at 16x speed with my 16x verbs and have had nothing but great succes with them. I guess it is just all a matter of opinions and what kind of hardware people have available.

@kawi007

for a lot of us that have thousands of burns under our belt, it sometimes takes more than a lil "nudge" from others to change our burning habits (speed)...i've been burning @8x for YEARS now since the 8x rated media came out onto the market and assuming others that i advise have a quality burner and quality media, i suggest burning @8x to them too~ (this is ESPECIALLY true with TRUE Benq burners, i know that creaky just got the Benq 1650 that i've had for a little while now and ALL my scores are better when burning @8x opposed to anything slower...i mainly use 8x rated TY (YUDEN000T02) or 8x rated Verbatims (MCC003) for like 95%+ of ALL my backups, so, i keep my burning @8x on ALL my discs~ it's proven to have the best quality scan scores for me from EXPERIENCE...

burning @16x is a little fast, even FOR ME...but, i don't have many 16x rated discs at this point, i continue to stockpile the 8x rated media as those seem to work THE BEST FOR ME personally...i don't burn DVD-R format regularly, so i'm pretty consistent with burning @max speed (ie. 8x for 8x rated DVD+R format) and all is well...i will burn @16x when the YUDEN000T03s are READILY available here in the U.S., but in the meantime, my "test" of 4 (four) 16x DVD+R YUDEN000T03s thus far proved to ME, that burning @16x is not only possible, but have good quality scores too...i tried 2 @8x, 1 @12x, and 1 @16x~ all 4 have 94+ scores with the @8x being the best with a 98~ have a good one

this thread popping up is handy!. i just had two MCC004's fail on me at 8x. Arghhhhhh. i was doing the multiple recorders thing in Nero. not gonna bother wth scans... one of the discs failed at the lead-in stage and Nero says it's empty so gonna try reburning with that one. then gonna break out the Yuden000T03's instead!. just when i think i can trust a Verbatim it lets me down boohoo. Plus to add insult to injury i went thru my Nero log and the best i can see is 'session fixation error'. Pants, it sucks when you can dissect Nero logs ie don't need any help in decoding the log hehe!!. ah well, burning is all good fun.

edit- the one that failed the lead-in worked fine the second time, the other disc seemed to have worked anyway. may have been a blip, hmmm, creaky ponders...

...i may well send these Indian MCC004's (just checked, they would seem to be Moser Baer India Verbatims) back to svp, something like 19 tubs left, and gonna replace them with a shedload of Yuden000T03 i think...it's a shame, i've used masses of Indian Verbs with out problems, i'd rather jump ship than persevere with them...

I have a question about scans, does the selected speed of the scan effect the error/failures because it seems to with my burns, also if burning speeds do as well. I ask this because I am looking at this scan that kawi did, and am floored, which gets me to thinking that maybe it's my burner or that i'm doing something wrong?

The writer/reader, burn speed, media and scan speed all have different effects on the scan.

I'm sure others can explain it better than I can.

The writer/reader has an effect because some don't support Nero CD-DVD Speed Test. Also, the firmware of the writer is important.

The media and burn speed have effects because some media likes to be burned at different speeds. For example, a disc rated at 8X may give better results burned at 4X. This is where quality of the media is important.

Most scans that I've seen done are at 4X. A faster scan may show errors that aren't there.

Hey creaky,

This is a little off subject but have you finally found some dvdrw drives you are happy with? I know you had bad things to say about the lite-on 1693's you had (which kind of suprised me) but thought you were very happy with your LG's. You've got a benq 1650 now right.

hey buddy, my 4163B is still burning up a storm, the 4167B still couldn't do more than 4x. i have another 4167B shrink-wrapped from new but not interested with that one, i'll put both of 'em in a future PC build as general use drives. i bought 2 1650's and i've kept one as spare but the other 1650 is doing just great, very pleased with it. i must've just hit an unlucky patch.

now i just buy 2 of each drive like kivory666 does

IHoe,

It looks ok but can be decieving since Nero scan disc doesn't support PO errors with that drive.

ok........ what program should I use to scan my disks? is there another one that will show PO errors? I have DVDInfo Pro, have DVDIdentifier..... what else will do it?

and I thought a quality score of 98 isn't bad.... or is it deceiveing? and keep in mind.... I usually never scan my disks! once in a while I will.

I wouldn't worry about it. Most likely it is a good burn. I seldom scan anymore either. You can try dvdinfopro. If memory serves me right that drive is the same as either a benq 1620 or 1640. Too lazy to research it right now but you could probably crossflash it with the benq f/w which should support PO errors with nero scandisc.

my radar is working pretty well today, but, mort81, ya got me~ :( guilty as charged...btw, have you got your asus mobo yet? or are they still being snails about the whole RMA process? i think i remember you said the new CPU is on the way already? but what good is getting the new cpu if you don't have a home to house it in? i'm sorry to hear about the whole ASUS delay... :(

@ihoe

while that backup scan IS very deceiving, i'm sure it's playability is excellent, sorry, i don't know much about that particular burner you have and i'm with mort81 in suggesting a cross-flash to a Benq (IF it IS in fact a benq rebadge, i'm not sure and much like my buddy mort81, too lazy to research it right now) :)

with the PI errors/failures being "non-existent" in your scan, i am going to assume that the quality score would most likely be LOWER than the 98 you are getting right now....same goes for kawi007, i know for a FACT that his Sony dru-810a is a rebadged Benq 1640, if he were to cross-flash it to a true 1640, it WOULD be able to run the FULL tests including the PI/PO readings using Nero cd/dvd speed~

most of the time, with these kind of drives, IF there is a manufacturer equivalent (meaning benq or liteon produced), the cross-flash to the ACTUAL manufacturer's model firmware will enable the drive to be able to perform more or all of the functions/tests using Nero or dvdinfopro~ :)

just something to consider for you Ihoe and kawi007, if either of you decide to cross-flash (which should be done at your own risk because it WILL VOID ur warranty), you should be able to run the FULL scale of disc quality tests offered by Nero or dvdinfopro~ the choice is yours as to how important that may be to you...

docTY~
