Ok, I'm at a loss. Yes, I always allow myself to suffer for about a week of pulling my hair out, trying to figure out my problems, before I consult you guys, the experts.
I back-up every new movie I buy and, have done so for years. I've always used DVD Shrink 3.2 and DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0. If Shrink gave me read errors I'd rip to the HD with Decrypter, first. Then, Shrink and burn as an ISO with Decrypter. This method proved flawless for any movie, untill recently...
I bought a few "new releases" last week and have only been able to successfully back-up a couple. Here are a few of the titles I cannot shrink; Final Fantasy VII, The Island, March of the Penguins, Wallace and Gromit, and Wolf Creek.
Symptom: No matter which of the above or following methods I use, my computer reboots in the middle (not immediately, about 70% complete) of DVD Shrinks "deep analysis" or "encoding" processes. Clone DVD2 will reboot during the middle of its encoding, aswell.
I've since tried 'Any DVD' in conjunction with these rippers: DVD Fab, Clone DVD2, DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink. I can sucessfully rip to the hard drive w/o any problems. Only during processing does the reboot problem occur.. with no error messages.
I've also tried VOB Blanker on all the different rips to no avail.

It really seems as though something is wrong with my computer. I re-formatted my HD a couple days ago after this problem began and, redownloaded and installed everything fresh, with minimal "HD junk/clutter" also, I only have one set of these decrypter softwares installed at a time in-case it was due to software conflicts.

Here's the kicker... I can decrypt/shrink/back-up older movies without incident, some new ones, too. Like, Aeon Flux presented no problems to my tried and true method.

Any Ideas?
Thanks

Yes, I downloaded ALL the programs mentioned in my post within this week and installed them fresh. At this point, I'm more concerned with the fact that my computer restarts windows in the middle of encoding, only on the newest block-buster dvds. I'm used to adverting errors on Sony and Disney flicks but this computer shutting down thing is new to me.

At first, I wasn't even able to rip some movies to my HD. Like, FF7. I was able to using DVD Fab. Ripping to the HD is no longer my problem, editing and processing is. Though I've read other posts on how to keep DVD Shrink working on these newer movies, the methods have not worked for me. To my suprize, yesterdays download of Clone DVD2 didn't work either, as a encoder. Yesterday's download of Any DVD seems to rip fine. But, encoding it's output file in either Clone DVD2 or DVD Shrink cause my computer to reboot before completion. Running Any DVD's output file through VOB Blanker first produced the same results.

I have no virus protection. I'm running windows xp that hasn't been updated at all. The OS is freshly installed a few days ago and hasn't been online untill the begining of this post. I can understand virus protection would be a good idea. But, is XP's SP2 a good idea for DVD Backups?

@Insaying

Since shut down occurs during recodings of the movies, which is cpu intense, could you have a heat problem? Is your pc heating up at all. Are your fans working properly and your heat sink and vents unobstucted by dust balls? After reformatting HD, it seems that all these programs would not fail at same time. I think this is a hardware problem. Just my 2 cents.

It seems I have the same sort of problem. My PC reboots almost immediately after shrink starts to burn the DVD. It analizes OK, but it just reboots every time, any movie.

I tried fresh install of everything, including the OS and it's just on one particular machine. Arrgg

I'm using shrink 3.2.0.15.

Any help would be appreciated.

BTW, it's not heat, Nero will burn a complete DVD with no problem

@gcohen2

It's not the recording that's cpu intensive it's the recoding. Does Nero Recode cause same problem? If it does then it's probably the heat.

HEY how much power do you have? what kind of compu. do you have compac dell etc.. is it p4 o p3 some comp. like dell have a power supply very small like 200 wtz. and that causes sortage of power and the comp. restarts every time the proccesor gets hot or the motherboard or your fan its not working properly, too much dust can cause your compu. to restart (the dust is covering all the exits).this may help men something

The PC is a dual Pentium 4 cpu, 3.2 GHz with about 6 fans. It's not the heat. It's got a 550 W PS.

It used to work but I installed some software that screwed it up. It was software that played MPGs. I forget the name of it.

That's why I rebuilt the unit from scratch.

Hey I never had that problem and I running 233 pentium 4 60g hard internal and 60g external 512mb. and I run flawless except for new codes sometimes.But the only thing I can think of that may casue this problem is a bad address in your memory chip. I know your pc may be new and all but that doesn't mean you don't have defective memory. Run memtest and see what you get. Make sure all drive have DMA checked in hardware section. make sure to close all programs in your tool bars that's not needed for burning. empty recycle bin. delete all cookies and temp internet files. and so . I think it's the memory thought. I can't think of any ohter thing that will shut you down like that besides heat.... Dawaxx60
