The burner is not fully recog the blank media. It see Ritek but the burner can not calibrate itself to the disk. The problem is w/ the burner. I have A NEC 1300 in the shop and it still works if I use 4X blank media as it will recog that. It will even recog. some 8X but it is a very old burner and NEC is not going to update the firmware. If they updated the firmware then you would be able to burn the 8X and 16X DVD's. Suggest you spend $40.00-50.00 and get a new burner

Cbrwn ,
The Memorex disks are not really good disks and I am being real nice in saying that. If you are in the U.S. try and find 4X blank media like Maxell, Verbatim. You will have a problem finding it and that is why I suggested you get another burner

The power calibration error is a tipoff that the burner and the media aren't getting along. It could be the burner going bad as well. Invest the $40 on a new burner. Yours is very old and will have increasing difficulty dealing with newer media.

NEC and BenQ are my recommendations.

As for the Sony. Some are BenQs and some are Lite-ons. If you know the exact model # of the Sony, you can probably tell whether it's a Benq or Lite-on oem (original equipment manufacturer) by going here and checking:

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?category=4&manufactor=30

I prefer BenQs over Lite-ons myself but others feel just the opposite. I like to buy the oems at places like Newegg 'cause I know exactly what I'm getting and don't need any bundles of software which is often just "lite" versions of full software.
