I'm real ignorant of all video terminology. I just learned to burn by trial and error. Please bear with me. I've had good success with the DVDecrypter/DVDShrink combo up until now. I could drag & drop Decrypter output files into Shrink and it would go to work. Decrypter failed me so I'm learning to use SmartRipper, but when I give the VTS_01_VOB file to Shrink, it's not happy with it. Any help, hints, or clues would be appreciated!

I do not think Smart Ripper has been updated in a while and it will not be able to do the newer movies. I suggest you use DVDFAB Decrypter to rip the DVD to HD and then use VobBlanker to correct any structure problems and then use DVDShrink. Below is a guide on how to use the programs and you can substitute Shrink for Recode if you wish.

I tried Fab and three others...they all failed. Smart Ripper zipped right through and left me with a vts_02_1_vob file that plays great with VLC player. I've searched here and Doom9 for anything that will convert this file to something Shrink can shrink.

What is the name of the movie? Have you tried the trial version of AnyDVD?

Try processing the files created by Smart Ripper thru vobblanker, then open the newly created files with shrink.

The Matrix. Trial AnyDVD slowed to 0.08MB/s. I looked at VobBlanker and I think I'm lost. It looks like it will only work with an IFO file. Smart Rip output a vts_02_1_vob file. I've just been lucky with DVDecrypter/Shrink. I want to get into this and video capture (even bought an All in Wonder), but I need more schooling. I hate to delete my file. My disc is nearly ruined and I don't know if I'll be successful ripping it again.

That is your problem as it is the bad original disk. If DVDD and AnyDVD could not do it then the disk is bad as you stated. Try and find a better copy you could borrow

You can use Nero Express. Find the .VOB then hit Add then Next then Burn . The big question is will it play in a DVD Player and I doubt it as there is no .ifo file but you can try it
