hey everybody
how are you doing?
I have a problem with dvd
it was working fine until I reformated my computer
when I am trying to burn using dvd decrypter
my burning time is like a little more than one hour
usually it took me 5 min
When starting to burn
the dvd decyrpter program is trying to full up the "buffer"
once it is done fulling up the "buffer"
the "buffer" went empty
and the "device buffer" keep moving up and down
I was thinking if it is because I am burning from a external usb harddrive file
thinking if my usb is set up to 2.0
I am not sure how to check if my usb drive is using 2.0 on my system
hope if someone could tell me how I could figure that out
I had checked the dma and it is dma-2
the firewire I am using is 1.09
now my dvd shrink
it ususally took me 11-23 min to rip a movie
now it took 1 hour or more
when rip the movie it showed that it will take me 11 min
but after a few second it started to increase the time number
and move all the way up to an hour
I am using windows sp2
my computer system is
amd4800
a8n32-sli
1G crossair ram
sorry for long post
thanks for your help

If your computer is fairly new and so is that external hard drive, chances are that both will and are operating at usb 2.0 speeds. I suggest you transfer the video file(s) to your primary hard drive and burn the file(s) from there. I've seen 4.5 GB files transfered from an external HDD to primary HDD in 30 plus minutes with the time remaining always varying, so it could very well slow the rip/encode/burn time down considerably. You should always try and rip to then burn from your primary HDD (or secondary HDD of equal speed and DMA mode operation) for best performance, leave/use external usb drives as storage.

hey thanks for your reply
and
you are right!

it is the usb harddrive
but before I formated my computer
I have always been using those usb harddrive
and it was fast that it took me 5 min to burn my dvd
but now it is took 1 hour and 10 min
I remember when I plug my usb in
windows showed thatmy harddrive could perform faster on usb2
and ask me to pick different usb2
but the thing is I used exacatly the same usb port I used last time
I am wonder if there is a setting or anything that will
enable my usb harddrive to use usb2
I find out when transfering my file from usb to my primary harddrive
it is remarkable slow
took 72 min to transfer
thanks for your help

This usually happens when you plug in a usb 2.0 device into a usb1.0 port. Since you stated you reformated your hard drive, I suggest you goto the microsoft update website and get all updates available for your operating system (I know there were some patches put out by microsoft reguarding usb 2.0 drivers). If you at some point installed a seperate usb 2.0 controller card, make sure it's drivers were installed, if not, it's possible windows configured it to operate at the slower usb 1.0 speed (12 MB/s).

Also:

If you want to increase performance from that usb drive, try this:

goto: my computer, right click on the usb drive and choose properties, click on the hardware tab, located and highlight your usb drive in the window (might say Maxtor or western digital usb device), click on the properties button and then click on the policies tab, here choose "optimize for performance" and make sure there is a check in the "enable write caching on the disk" box, now click ok.

See if this helps with the drives performance.
