Sounds like a simple compatability issue.

Switch to the plus format, and make sure it's quality media.

You got a no disc error on the stand alone. Your pcs confirm it's a good backup copy, now it's up to the stand alone players.Your player doesn't like that backup. There's something wrong with it. Here's some of the likely culprits for that No Disc error:

1) Format-try opposite. If your drive has the ability to booktype-definitely use the plus format and booktype them to dvd-rom.

2) Media quality- Some players do have trouble with certain brand names-MID codes-of media.

3) Worn out player-if it won't recognize either of your plus or dash backups, and booktyping is no option- Drive replacement. Either a cheap $25 player or a quality $40 DVD-RW drive that will booktype should take care of that issue.

4) Burn program

5) Burner quality-It may need a firmware update,or it may not be too good of a burner.

Please answer these questions:

1) What is the brand name and speed rate of your blank dash media? The MID codes will come in handy-via neroinfotool.

2) What is the brand name and model# of your DVD-RW drive? Also the current firmware version-via neroinfotool.

3) What is the brand name and model# of your stand alone player? This way we can look up the specs, and some user feedback.

4) Has that player ever played any dvd backups before?Maybe someone elses backups like a friend/family member?

One thing you can try. Insert that backup disc into that player, and turn off the power. Wait a minute, and turn back on. A slim chance it may be recognized.

hi

thank you again - i will get all the info you requested asap and reply on this thread

i have looked at my dvd standalone manual and it does not refer to anything
technical like +plus and - minus discs - it says specifically dvd only. i do know
my burner drive does both types.

so it looks like i could try + and if they don't work i have a problem with the
player. luckily i have my tv side by side with my iMac g5 which plays them nicely
as does my PC. its just annoying that you can't lend back ups to a friend to watch
on a standalone. it started me thinking why they would'nt play on my standalone

That's why I booktype the plus format to dvd-rom.They have the highest compatability rate for stand alone players and pc drives.

Post back your model# and maybe it has booktyping capability. Also list the programs you use for your dvd backup process.

Cheers!

hi

thanks as it turns out my dvd player only plays dvd.

so i switched to another and they play perfectly. the new player
is a toshiba and plays rw - and rw + and it even plays DivX files
for movies i have downloaded.

great - but there is always a catch it is restricted to region 2 only?

what about all my u.s. region dvds - no hack - after a quick google.

any suggestions for my u.s. dvd's? dont say buy another stand alone

its a toshiba sd 260e

kind regards

DVD Shrink will make the backup region free for you. After you've edited to you liking and hit backup, go to DVD Region and tick the box that reads Region Free. This will remove the region coding from your backup and should be playable in all DVD players.

Take some of Saugmon's advice and try to booktype your DVD+R's to DVD-ROM, it just may work in your older player. Booktyping tricks your player into thinking it has a commercial DVD inserted int the drive.
