another question..

i was givin a copied version of hdloader, that was burned onto a disk.
do i need swap magic to boot that disk or will it still work regardless?

just seeing if i need to tell the person that they need to go F#%*($ themselves with a f$*%)@ loaf of bread or if i need to buy both swap magic and hdloader.

I'm hoping one of the knowledgable, friendly people here can help me with my little problem. Essentially, USB Advance loads, but instead of listing the games I have installed, it says "Insert a USB Device". On the right panel, it says "Games N/A, USED ---, FREE ---, STATUS No dev". This seems odd to me, because the USB Advance elf file itself is running off the usb device.

Pertinent info:
- The usb device in question is a 250GB Lacie usb hdd (with AC power source)
- My PS2 is a slimline SCPH-70011
- The game was installed directly to the drive using the USBeXtreme tool. It created three files in the root directory of the drive, 'ul.cfg' and two other large files beginning with 'ul' and ending with '.00' and '.01'. So far I have tried it with two separate games. As a side note, converting (or copying, or whatever the correct term is) only took about 5 minutes 2GB. People who take a half-hour or so must be using a USB 1.0 connection. I'm using USB 2.0, and it just flies.
- I'm loading the USB Advance elf using Swap Magic 3.6. I've loaded it successfully using the '\SWAPMAGIC\SWAPMAGIC.ELF' method, and through Unofficial ELF Launcher. Either way it loads from the HDD in question, not a memory card or separate USB drive.

I hope that's all the information necessary. Again, any help will be much appreciated. As a bonus, once I get USB Advance working I'm eager to try out MasterChu's SLUS file edit theory to get games working that otherwise won't play. I actually have Rogue Trooper to test, the game he specifically mentioned in the original post for the idea. Any suggestions for what program to use to edit the SLUS file?

It sounds like your hard drive might not be compatable with usbadvance. Check out my post on page three. It is the fifth post on the page. It has the link to hard drives that are compatable with usbadvance.

As for your slus question, if I understand you right; there is no program needed to edit the slus, you just need to find another game that has the correct SLUS and replace the DNAS file.
exp. Replace DNAS280 with SLUS280.

If I remember right masterchu has put together a very detailed and easy to follow guide for this method.

@duke69111 - Thanks for trying, but that was completely unhelpful. The links you posted were for compatibility with HD Advance. I'm using USB Advance. Furthermore, on the second list you linked to, 9 of 12 people reported a drive similar/identical to mine to be working. Previous to posting here I searched the net for a list of USBeXtreme/Advance compatible drives, but was unable to find one. Anyone know of any?

SLUS editing: I'm not trying to get DNAS games working, I want to try MasterChu's idea of fixing games that don't work with USB Advance by replacing instances of /cdrom:0 with /. Again, any suggestions for a program to use to edit would be appreciated.

ELFs are the Sony version of executable files. The USB Advance you downloaded should contain an ELF file. There are many ways of running this ELF file. I personally use Swap Magic, because the latest version (3.6) has the ability to run ELF files from the Memory Card or a USB device. I'm not sure about version 3.3 and previous. The way I did it was to create a directory on my USB drive called SWAPMAGIC. Then I renamed the USB Advance ELF to SWAPMAGIC.ELF, and put it in the SWAPMAGIC directory. It doesn't matter that the name is different, that's just so Swap Magic will recognize and load the file properly. Trust me, this works. Connect your powered on USB drive to your PS2, put the Swap Magic disc in the drive, and turn on the PS2. You'll see the usual loading screen for Swap Magic, then after a few seconds you'll see the USB Advance loading screen, which should then display the game(s) you have installed on the drive.

If you don't have Swap Magic, there are other ways of getting the ELF to run, but I can't help you, sorry. If in fact you have a slimline PS2, and are connecting your HDD to it using USB, you don't need HD Advance. That program is for people who own a phattie and are hooking up their HDD using a more complicated method.

As for my previous issue, my issue was in fact compatibility. I took the Lacie/WD drive back to the store, and for one penny less I was able to get a Maxtor Ultra16 250GB drive and usb enclosure. I switched the jumper from CS to Master, did all the formatting and whatnot, and it works like a charm.

I'm in process of trying out MasterChu's idea right now. As soon as my computer will allow me to disconnect my drive, I'll be headed downstairs to try my first "hacked" version of Rogue Trooper with USB Advance. Wish me luck.

Sorry about the double post here, I couldn't figure out how to edit my previous post. Is that even an option?

Anyway, turns out the idea of replacing 'cdrom:0\' with '\' is a wild goose chase. Two things confirm it for me:
1. It didn't work with Rogue Trooper. I tried simply removing the reference, and then replacing it with '00's in hex (to preserve original file size and memory addresses). Didn't work either way.
2. Out of curiosity, I looked though the SLUS file for Tomb Raider: Legend, which works just fine though USB Advance (except for the videos, of course). It also happens to have multiple references to 'cdrom:0\', so that can't be what's causing the problem.
3. The SYSTEM.CNF files for Rogue Trooper, Sly 2, and Tomb Raider: Legend all shart with "boot2=cdrom0:\".

This leads me to believe that USB Advance intercepts and replaces references to cdrom0, just like HD Advance, so something else must be causing the incompatibility.

On a different subject, do you think there might be any way to get videos working properly with USB Advance? I ask because last night I was able to watch AVIs on my PS2, loading directly from the USB HDD. All it had to do was build up a bit of a buffer at the beginning, like when you watch videos on the net. I realize that a solution would probably involve editing the game code itself, which is beyond the means of most of us, but perhaps someone smart out there could cook up a solution.

This is exactly where I am, except I'm using a 4th gen 20gig iPod. LaunchELF recognizes the device and even allows me to run programs from it, but USB Advance doesn't recognize it. Are there any alternatives to this program?

In all the research I've done, the only two programs I could find for running backups from a usb device are USB eXtreme and USB Advance. The latter is a hack of the former, so compatibility issues would logically be identical with both. Sorry, dude, I feel your pain.

iamdark - If you're getting a blank screen, it's because the game you're trying to use is incompatible. It (the game) either needs to be patched, or it just isn't going to work off a usb harddrive. Nobody can give you a copy of USBExtreme or Swap Magic, both of those programs are useless to you if they aren't on a factory-pressed disc. USBAdvance is exactly the same as USBExtreme, compatibility-wise, since there's only one version of each, no patches or updates or anything.

As I suspected, both your games are incompatible. Here's the best list I know of, for all games compatible with USBAdvance/Extreme:
http://jaydium.servehttp.com/usbextreme/gamelist.php

Colin McRae 5/2005 and Da Vinci Code are both listed as not compatible. Sorry.
