Thats ok though, I can just do the DNAS Swap trick and get most of them to work on a ntfs formated hard drive with usb advance.

Thanks for your help,

Are you reffering to typing in a DNAS code in windip? If not, is there some trick im missing that makes the huge list of incompatable games work? Basically, are you telling me theres a way to make Pro Evo 6 work after all? Please say you are...

Hey Guys,

I was wondering if it had to be a slimline PS2 to use the external HDD. I have one of the larger PS2's and would like to be able to do this, but I couldn't find any mention of it in this thread. Can someone give me some information.

1. Does it have to be slimline PS2
2. Do I need a newtwork connection to my PS2?
3. Any other helpful hints would be wicked!

Thanks in advance.

Hi everybody,

i found information in this thread very helpful, i hav PSTwo (slim, 75004), since i can play copied games, which are available in India, i think mine is already modded when i bought, a friend of mine told me that the lense might get week after few months, so started searching for alternatives, and i found right information here. MasterChu has provided good info!!!! since USB HD is good alternative instead of swaping Game DVDs and saving Laser.
i had created USBAdvance CD using Nero, and able to directly boot or run this CD on my PSTwo, it can detect my USB HD. since it is already moded i dont need to use SwapMagic. my questions is that is it possible to directly boot from USB drive instead of Putting USBAdvance Disk in PSTwo. everytime i have to put this disk in the ps2 then boot it, after that i can access USB HD. is there any direct method to avoid using CD, and launching .ELF directly from USB HD.

@ashPSTwo

If you already own a modded PS2 maybe you have the possibility to start elf files from memory card. This depends on the mod-chip build in. But it sounds like that you dont know if it is modded or not. If you own a Swap Magic 3.6 you got to start the CD/DVD to start from a different medium. With Swap Magic you can start from USB drive but you will have to start Swap Magic first.

The majority of the games wont work off the usb-harddrive. Even with the DNAS-Swapmethod the compatibility is very low. If you want to play from harddisk you will have to get a chubby ps2, a network-adapter and an internal harddisk. Thats the way ist should work.

do you need a PS2 network adaptor or is there a way around that? The only reason I ask is because I'm a bit strapped for cash right now, but I have lots of time, an external USB HDD and an original PS2.

AFAIK isn't there another possibility to get a harddisk connected to the old ps2, besides the usb-port of cause. You need the network-adapter. There is also the possibility to connect an internal harddisk to the slim ps2 by getting an adapter. But this adapter has to be soldened inside the slim ps2.

Thanks for ur sugggetion. For me, I think Instead of Swap magic its better to use USBAdvance as i already have it!!!! is there any way to copy elf to MC for my PSTWO, as I dont know much about it, and dont have all that, network card etc, heard little bit of uLaunchELF, saw tutorials on www.sksapps.com, but dont know how to load it, should i make CD and then load it, like usbadvance. i think with this application one can copy files to MC and to USB drive as well. but again there is a problem, to access USB drive one need to have USBD.IRX on MC!!!!!!
pls help!! need your valuable advice.
thanks

Get the usbadvance from this site:
http://www.sksapps.com/hd/
Get usbd.irx from that one (i dont even know right now, if you really need it):
http://console.iscentral.net/?go=downloads&cat=4

Then you can put it both on your mc by transferring it through FTP or copying it from usb to mc with ulaunch or the simplest way:
Use a usb-drive. In all cases you will have to generate a directory called SWAPMAGIC. In there you put the usbavance.elf and rename it to SWAPMAGIC.ELF. Then you start with SWAPMAGIC 3.6 DVD/CD an it should start usb-advance off the usb-drive automaticly.

This works on slim ps2.
For transfer with FTP you need a slim ps2 or a old ps2 with network-adapter.

Ok, step by step. I'm telling you the solution with an usb-drive and SwapMagic 3.6.

Format your usb-drive to fat32. To do so, rightclick on your usb-drive in winxp and choose fat32 from the filesystem menu OR you open a shell and type "format VOLUME /fs:fat32" (of course for VOLUME you will have to type in the letter of the drive plus ":" and without quotes.
Create a directory on the usb-drive and call it SWAPMAGIC.
Rename the program you want to launch to SWAPMAGIC.ELF for automatic booting OR rename it to the following and on the start screen of SWAPMAGIC where you normaly start a game you will have to push different keys at the same time to start the program:
SMBOOT0.ELF (push UP + L1)
SMBOOT1.ELF (UP + L2)
SMBOOT2.ELF (UP + R1)
SMBOOT3.ELF (UP + R2)
For example you rename usb-advance.elf to SMBOOT1.ELF put it in the directory SWAPMAGIC on the usb-drive, connect the usb-drive to the usb-port on the ps2, start SwapMagic 3.6 CD/DVD and push UP + L2 on the start screen simultaniously.
Thats all.
Of course does the usb-drive have to work with the ps2. I had several usb-drives that didnt work. But this you will have to check out yourself.
The FTP-way for transferring something to the memory card is a bit different. If anyone wants to i can tell you another time.

Thanks for ur step by step explaination for SwapMagic.
but the problem with me is that i dont have swapMagic cd/dvd, i think i dont need it as i can start my PStwo(Slim) with USbAdvance. so it will be a grt help if u could tell me how to copy files to MC, i dont even have network card to connect it to PC, all i have is USBAdvance few ELFs, 40GB USB hard drive, and PSTwo and of course CD writer!!!!!
U had mentioned that i can use ULaunch, do i need to creat disk with its elf available on www.sksapps.com and create a disk, like i created for USBAdvance????
can i do all this with my current setup, without SwapMagic!!!!
need ur valuable advice

Thanks

Do you have a chipped ps two, cause you told me that you can start a burned usbadvance-cd without SwapMagic? When you can start a burned cd/dvd without SwapMagic I think you will have one. If it is so then what do you wanna do exactly? Do you wanna start usbadvance from mc or usb-drive? If you own a chipped ps two it depends on the chip thats build in. For myself I just use SwapMagic 3.6. SwapMagic can start elf-files from mc and usb-drive.

Hi all,

OK, I am almost there in making my slim PSTwo work with a USB External hard drive. I have followed the original guide, have the Swap Magic 3.6 discs, have downloaded USBAdvance and installed it as SWAPMAGIC.ELF into a a subdirectory off the root on the hard drive called SWAPMAGIC. I have also copied the extent of my collection of games onto the hard drive using the USBExtreme client software.

I boot with the Swap Magic 3.6 DVD, it recognizes the USBAdvance renamed ELF on the hard drive, and boots into Free USBAdvance. USBAdvance shows me my four games:
* Tiger Woods 2006
* Tiger Woods 2005
* Madden NFL 2006
* Madden NFL 2007

HOWEVER, when I try to start ANY of my games [by selecting them and using X or the Triangle on my controller], my external USB hard drive flashes (like it does when it is reading) for about 10 seconds, then stops. Nothing comes up, and the screen stays black. I have left it for 10 or 15 minutes, but nothing ever loads. To return to the game choices I have to restart the PS2.

Have I done something wrong, or do all of the games I own not work from an external USB hard drive? If that is the case, is there any way to make them work with all the TOC manipulation stuff?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks Stereo,

A list would be great.

If my four games and how ever many Nothingto had don't work, we are either really unlucky in our game choices or the game compatability with USBAdvance and USB hard drives is pretty poor.

Does anybody know if USBExtreme has any better compatability, or is it the same deal?

Let us know about the list when you scrounge it up.

Thanks!

You can find a list of compatible games on http://jaydium.servehttp.com/usbextreme/gamelist.php . Just take a look. Most of the games wont work. There's a method by changing the DNAS files, but mostly this wont work either. USBadvance abd USBextreme are the same peace of software, as far as I know. For best compatibility you'll have to get an internal hard-drive.

i have a 250 gb external hard drive and i was wondering if i partitioned the drive and formatted one part of the drive using usb extreme would i lose the information on the other partition? im afraid of trying cuz i have alot of important info on the other partition.

also i tried copying nfs underground on the ntfs partition (the blank part) but i keep getting 4 files and none of them are named 'nfs underground' as i specified in usb extreme. wat am i doing wrong?

"nothingto" If you have the Slim PStwo and a router then just plug an ethernet cable into the back of your PStwo. If you have the Fat PS2 you will need the network adapter.

"blairafon" Sounds like you did it right if you used the windows utility for USB Extreme/Advance. Once you get the HDD hooked up to you PS2 and load USB Extreme/Advance your game title will show up there. Ignore the strange file names generated during the copy to the HDD.
