ok thanks. so about the whole partitioning of the drive... will it work as how i partitioned the drive or do i need a completely formatted usb hdd? and how do i separate the game files of the various games as they are copied in parts? if i put the games in separate folders will they still be recognized by the ps2?

New to the forums. Ive read though a lot of this thread, but there are many pages, and im on dialup...
This question may have been asked and answered, but I didnt see it.
Can this USB method be used on a thick PS2 (I have a v7)? Ive seen boot disks that will allow you to use an internal hdd in conjunction with the network adaptor, but I would much rather use USB instead.
Nevermind, I found the answer :)

Yes the info on drive F will remain intact. Just make sure you are formating the correct drive in USB Extreme. But also make sure that your drive H is a NTFS partition. Just becuase it has been formated with USB Extreme that partition can still be used for files other then games. I use a single partition on my USB drive to transfer files and keep my games on it.

Hi MasterChu thanks for the great guide. With it I was finally able to get my USB HDD to work like I want it. One problem though I've noticed now that it is FAT32 filesystem when I copy files from my C: drive to my USB it takes 10 times longer. Even while installing games. I'd try installing a game on my C: drive and it installs real quick but then when installing to the USB drive it takes for ever. I'm not talking about installing PS2 games but actual PC games. Is this normal or did I mess up my USB drive some how?
Earlier I formatted back to NTSF and copy/install speeds were back to normal. Then I again reformatted back to FAT32 and it's slow again when copy/installing.

Guys, I have a problem. I just got a USB enclosure for my 40GB IBM hard drive, and I'm trying to run Colin McRae Rally 04(it's an import). The problem is that when I boot USB Advance, it black screens on me, whether the hard drive is plugged in or not(I'm running it from the Memory Card). It doesn't even get past the splash screen. I'm booting it through LaunchELF, though, I'm considering trying to run it through MAX Media Player. Any clues what's wrong? Is my hard drive incompatible(it's in an ADS Tech enclosure)? Is the ELF busted? HELP!
EDIT: Never mind, I found the problem: my chip's Y-Fix was screwing it up. Now, I have ANOTHER problem: my hard drive is not recognized, probably because it's formatted to NTFS, so I'll try reformatting to FAT32 and see what that gives.
Edit 2: That was the problem with the hard drive not being recognized, but now, I'm faced with A THIRD PROBLEM(when will they end?). Colin McRae Rally 04 is a European import, meaning it's programmed in the PAL video standard. The problem: no matter what video mode I use on my DMS4, whether it's default, color carrier, NTSC, PAL, or PAL60, the screen is in color, but the top is cut off, and the screen is rolling vertically, something that shouldn't happen when you have NTSC video mode on, which is what I have currently enabled. Do I need to use a PAL to NTSC patch for that?

OK, success! I have Tiger Woods 2005 working from my USB hard drive. I had to replace the DNAS280.img with IOPR280.img (off the same original CD).
It takes quite a while to do it that way (with the DNAS swap), so I may try to shorten that process some. At least it takes longer than just popping the DVD into a computer and using the USBExtreme Win32 client! Hey, at least it works.
Obviously (I think) this will not allow online playing, but that isn't my thing anyway.
Well, just wanted to let everyone know that I was able to get it working. If you need info on the DNAS swap do a search or post here and I'll help out if I can.
Good Luck!

Hey guys, if you're stuck with the black screen after loading games onto your USB hard drive on your PSTwo (Slim), looks like the DNAS swap is the way to go. Just tried with Tiger Woods 2006, and it also works (Tiger Woods 2005 was my first try - and first success)! Haven't tried my other two games (Madden NFL 2006 and Madden NFL 2007), but don't see any reason why they shouldn't work too!
Thanks everybody for the help on getting USBAdvance installed (especially MasterChu for the first tutorial).
Everything looks great now!

Umm, Colin McRae Rally 04 doesn't use DNAS, the game is not made to be played online. The problem is VIDEO STANDARD CONVERSION(PAL to NTSC). I have my DMS4 set to Force NTSC mode with no Y-Fix as it prevents USB Advance from booting. Like I said, when I use Colin McRae Rally 04 on the hard drive, it gives me full color, but the screen just keeps on rolling, and the game has no NTSC or 60hz option. I'm going to try something now, and that's to boot USB Advance off a disc and off the Memory Card instead of uLaunchELF.
EDIT: I found the problem! I needed to use the ADR PAL to NTSC patcher. The game works, I can perfectly center it, the opening video sequences are choppy, and gameplay has some frame rate issues, but I don't care, as long as I can play it, I'm good.

Ace, I know this doesn't help your problem at all, but it does seem to solve the issues for those of us who have SwapMagic + USBAdvance working, but can't get any games to load. We just get a black screen after we choose for a game to load, and nothing else ever happens.
For Nothingto:
Here are the steps that worked for me. It is a lot of work, but I think it is worth it to save the wear and tear on the laser, and to not have to switch DVD's ever again!
Kudos to Bryce_v_s, his tutorial is what this is based on. You can download his tutorial here.
There may be an easier way to do this, but I just know that this worked for the two games I wanted when copying without modifying the DNAS files didn't. If you need any of these steps in more detail, let me know:
1) Rip the DVD to your computer (I used "Extract Objects" on Isobuster)
2) Do a search on the ripped files for DNAS???.img (For me it was in the "Modules" subdirectory - and there may be more than one DNASxxx.img file, though of course with different numbers, like DNAS280.img and DNAS300.img)
3) Delete all DNASxxx.img files (Make note of the xxx number(s))
4) Rename IOPRxxx.img to DNASxxx.img (it must have the same number and may exist on the same DVD, if not you can get it from a completely different PS2 game as long as the xxx number is the same - the size may be different, but that should be OK, and even the region can be differnt [Thanks to Ace's testing for that]) It doesn't seem to matter that, at this point, you no longer have the IOPRxxx.img files; my games worked fine without them
5) Rebuild the image from the ripped files on your computer with the new DNASxxx.img file(s) (I used CDVDGEN for this - Make sure they are in the same order as on the original DVD)
6) Copy/b (binary) the *.00? files back together into one ISO in a DOS window
7) Mount the ISO on a virtual DVD drive (I used the StarPoint program)
8) Connect the USB hard drive you will use for your PS2 to your computer
9) Use UI_INSTALL to copy the game onto your USB Hard Drive from the virtual DVD drive
10) Disconnect your USB hard drive from the computer, connect it to the PS2, and give it a try!
Good luck, it worked for me- again, thanks to MasterChu for the SwapMagic/USBAdvance work, and to Bryce for the DNAS fix- the combination of the two is what it took to get things working for me.

MasterChu,
If you are still around, any chance you'd be interested in incorporating some of Bryce's info on the DNAS swap into your original guide? It seems like many/most games don't work without doing this DNAS swap. Your guide was great, and got me to the point where I had USBAdvance coming up, and could see all my games, just none of them would run!
It took several more weeks of poking around to find out about the DNAS stuff. Or, at least maybe mention in your guide that if you get a black screen with no game load after USBAdvance comes up that the DNAS swap might be necessary?
Thanks!

Should be good information as now I have a DNAS equipped game(Colin McRae Rally 2005) that I'm trying to patch. I used WinDIP to patch the lone DNAS ID on the ISO(DNAS280.img). It refused to boot. I'll try with an IOPR280.img file see what that does.

Hey Jrod,
Not sure what the point would be, and I don't think it will work, but give it a try! You'd have to boot off memory card or USB device (something I know nothing about) because I don't think you can integrate a burn of a game AND the boot loader. Then once you boot of the MC or USB device, don't know how you'd point it to the DVD drive to actually read the game. You could make the DVD look like a hard drive, but don't think the PS2 has the intelligence to do that.
If you're trying to work around a burned out laser, seems like it would be cheaper to buy a new laser than to buy an external DVD drive. Plus all the "sweat equity" of trying to get it to work hardly seems worth it when you can play burned games in the PS2 itself with nothing but SW3.
If you decide to try it let me know if you get it working.

Walvis,
You need to buy at least one piece of software, or a hardware modchip. You can't burn a copy of SwapMagic because it has some kind of special format that can only be created at the factory.
All the rest of the software can be obtained on the internet, but you have to start with Swap Magic or one of its peers.
If you buy Swap Magic, you won't even need a USB Mem stick, just the SwapMagic CD or DVD and the USB HD.
Go back to the first page for instuctions on how to do it.

I have some DNAS problems here. Still can't get Colin McRae Rally 2005 working. It black screens without it, and with the patch in a rebuilt ISO, USBeXtreme's Windows installer gives me a read error(patched with a DNAS patcher). I'm about to try using Burnout 3's IOPRP280.img, which is good considering Colin McRae Rally 2005 uses DNAS280.img as its DNAS file. Has anyone ever gotten this game to work, and with which game did you swap the DNAS file? Does region matter(Burnout 3 is NTSC U/C, while Colin McRae Rally 2005 is PAL)?

Hi Ace,
Too bad your initial DNAS swap didn't work. For Tiger Woods 2005, the CD had both a DNAS280.img and a IOPR280.img. I just deleted the original DNAS280.img, renamed IOPR280.img to DNAS280.img, and everything worked (after rebuilding, etc.).
For Tiger Woods 2006, it has a DNAS280.img and DNAS300.img, but only had an IOPR300.img. So, I deleted both DNAS's, renamed IOPR300.img to DNAS300.img, then copied the IOPR280.img from Tiger Woods 2005 and renamed it DNAS280.img, and it worked (after rebuilding, etc.).
Sorry I can't answer any of the rest of your questions regarding your particular game, DNAS's, regions, etc. as I've just barely started delving into this stuff.
Good Luck!

Okay, but get this: Colin McRae Rally 2005 has NO, that's right NO IOPR file, just a DNAS280.img file. What's up with that?

Hey Ace,
Apparently that is not uncommon. In some of the other stuff I've read re: DNAS they talk about getting the IOPRxxx.img files from other games, or sometimes even from a Sony demo game disk. As I understand it, it does not matter if the IOPR/DNAS file comes from a different game or not, so if you have any original PS2 game with an IOPR280.img file, it might be worth trying. I would try for the same region, just in case, if you can do that.
