I've noticed that when you set Shrink to automatically make your rips the target size for DVD-5's... it will result in a file that is 4.35 GB (4,681,420,800 bytes). However, I've opened ISOs in Shrink before and it told me that some compression was needed to fit on a DVD-5 disc. However, I was able to burn these files without compression and they fit snug onto a single-layer DVD. Is there a better custom target size for single-layer discs in order to get the most on one disc (and have less compression)??

Hello.

The reason people set their target size to 4350 or 4300 is to prevent burning to the very outer edge of the disk. Burning failures sometimes occur near the outer edge because of the manner in which disks are manufactured. Even if the burn is successful, it may be the case the disk will be unreadable at the outer edge at some point in the future.

A DVD5 generally has a maximum possible target size of 4464mb.

The amount of additional compression required by reducing the target size to 4350 will hardly be noticeable for the most part.

I've noticed Nero reports the last possible write address on my Taiyo Yuden media as 4489 MB so there is a bit of room left. I leave the setting in Shrink at 4464 MB (The DVD-5 setting). As laddyboy metioned, a 100 MB or so reduction doesn't change the required compression very much.
I don't know anything that degrades the outer portion of the disc more than any other area on it, rough handling could do it I suppose.
