What exactly does shrink remove to fit on a DVD-5 disc without reauthoring anything?

You can manually remove anything you want from a DVD by inserting a still image. You can also remove audio streams and subpicture feeds.

Okay but I don't want to remove anything, so what I wanted to know is what exactly dvdshrink does to the original copy so that it fits onto a single layer disc.

It compresses the content enough to fit onto a single SL disc. For quality reasons it is recommended to remove as much as you are willing to. If you wish to not remove any content you will want to use DVD Shrinks quality controls to smooth out the effects of high compression levels.

....lol....maybe, uh...00asdkj234@^@%#^---Compression???
EDIT: Dang!~!! Locoeng beat me to post
by a second!
Oh yeah; and another program you can use that'll fit a full DVD-9 onto a DVD-5 is DVD Rebuilder.....I just switched over to it from using shrink yesterday and I must say that I'm incredibly impressed at how well it handles such a deep compression....in my opinion; if you want full disc backups, then use DVD-RB; before that I would use Shrink with Deep Analysis and some other enhancement; but RB does a way better job than that..
P.S. I will warn you though, if you have a slow comp., you'll want to encode the movies overnight instead of waiting 3.5-maybe even 8 hours throughout the daytime.... hope that helps ya man! Good luck, and happy burning!!!!! (also, what I said at the top of my post wasn't an attack; I was just jokin' with ya;;;;;:)):p)

DVD-RB takes about 10x longer than DVD Shrink, but the quality is unparalleled.

About DVD RB. Are there any guides that don't feature CCE? Becuase I don't have that kind of money and I am looking for free stuff. If not, DVD Shrink will have to do.

He's already got Ripit4Me in his sig....
Here is a rather lengthy but very informative thread on DVD-RB. There are free encoders for the program out there, but I don't use the program so can't offer any advice there. But you can get it here:
