Two things I have:

A folder of files ripped from a DVD (uncompressed .vob / .ifo etc) but these were ripped with the credits spliced off of the end.

A folder of 3 .avi files that have uncompressed audio but XviD compressed video. These are VCD rips and as such are all 700mb CD sized AVI files. I don't want these anymore but they have the credits for the film.

What I want to do is delete 2/3 AVI files (don't need help with that!) and on the last XviD / AC3 .avi file I want to splice the credits off of it and attach this at the end of the video in DVD Shrink (or some thing that will author the DVD format similarly). Credits roll from 3646 seconds to 4172 seconds in the .avi. I have space available on the DVD, so without access to the original disc, I want to put the credits back on.

I've tried using VLC to splice export only 3646 - 4172 seconds and transcode the video but leave the audio intact. I left the audio intact, and it spliced it exactly how I wanted! Yay! But it completely removed the video and I'm not sure I'd be able to import this into DVD Shrink anyway.

Clear as mud? Anyone care to take a stab at this problem with me? I'd surely appreciate it and thanks for reading this far! (o:

Convert the AVI to MPG. Use MPEG Video Wizard to cut and add the credits to the VOB's. Save as mpg or DVD format. Use Shrink if needed.

Willing to convert to Linux? The programs for that OS are the best freeware.

Dual booting with Linux is painless. I'm back and forth between Windows and Linux all the time.

Most, if not all, distros of Linux come in a Live version. What this means is that you can boot from the CD and run Linux without installing anything on your hard drive. This gives you the chance to see which one you might like the best.

What I would recommend is to get a small hard drive and connect it as a slave. Install Linux to that once you have tried different distros and find one that you like.

Yes, I should have specified that I mean to use available open source or proprietary freeware solutions as these generally provide a better experience for me. For instance, I don't use Adobe Premiere because it's bulky and slow relative to solutions that I can just donate to.

I'd boot from a Live CD (PPC or x86) to get this done. My problem is that the tools I am using (like VLC etc) are what I use on my main OSX box {/edit , what I've been using in this Windows situation /edit} and when I boot into a 'nix OS. I didn't see what would be different. What other options are available?

I appreciate the response dolphin2 as that's a viable solution you've offered and it was my oversight that I forgot the be more specific in the type of solution I was after.

Take a look at VideoLinux: http://videolinux.net/news.php

See if there is anything with that distro that will help your problems. It's a Live CD and works very well off the CD.

The Live CD of VideoLinux?

What are the problems?

How fast did you burn the CD? Did you run a MD5 check on the ISO before burning?

the burn was right and the boot seems right, but shows red failed a couple of times.

I might need to try it again but I am trying to get my ratio up on three different trackers so I cannot afford the down time right now.

this might be getting a bit off topic unless it will burn movies on a good boot. so maybe I should start a new topic and post the link here when I try it again.

EDIT: how do you do a check of the MD5 whatever? I've seen the file (it has a long hex hash) but I don't know how to check it against a file in Windows

Thanks for another helpful response dolphin2. That sounds like just the ticket. I'll give that a shot and rsvp with my experience editing / transcoding in that environment.

Get a MD5 checker here:
http://userpages.umbc.edu/~mabzug1/cs/md5/md5.html

It just checks to make sure the file is complete after downloads. It will prevent trying to run/burn corrupted files.
