Guys, I posted yesterday about using 'DVD Shrink' with the decrypter 'AnyDVD' on my regular computer. The answers I got were all helpful.

Here's a different problem, and I realise that it may ultimately be a Nero matter. But first, bear with me ...

After my recent computer troubles (resulting in a replaced hard drive and motherboard), I bought a second computer, an HP Pavilion dv4206TU Notebook, as a fall-back computer. The specs for this computer say that it has (and I quote) 'Sonic MyDVD (only with DVD+/-RW double layer drive)'.

Yesterday I installed on the HP computer 'DVD Shrink' and, as a decrypter, 'DVD43'.

Today I wanted to backup a movie, MOSQUITO COAST, which I deliberately selected because the original disc has no extras on it, not even a trailer. Should be a simple matter, I thought to myself.

'DVD43' had no problems with the disc, and 'DVD Shrink', in re-author mode, worked well in analysing and copying it.

But after the copying was complete, and 'DVD Shrink' had sent the output files to C:\MOSQUITO_COAST, it didn't prompt me to remove the original disc from the computer's CD/DVD drawer and insert a blank disc, as I had expected it would. It simply gave me the message: 'Files ready for burning with appropriate burning software.'

I found Sonic MyDVD and tried to use it. But I couldn't get it to burn from the specified files. Okay, that's my ineptness, and I may ring up the HP people for help.

But then I loaded onto the computer my copy of Nero, which is an OEM Suite version of Nero 6.3.1.26.

(Btw, to load Nero from disc, I naturally removed the original MOSQUITO COAST disc from the computer's drawer. Whereupon a 'DVD Shrink' message told me: 'Device was removed! Titles which were loaded from the device wil be deleted.' What does that message mean, please! I went to C:\MOSQUITO_COAST, fully expecting that it would now be empty! But no! The output files were still there!)

Unfortunately, on installing Nero and trying to point it to C:\MOSQUITO_COAST to burn from the files there, I couldn't get it to work either! I tried doing this twice. The first time I got this message: 'Nero Express. [Exclamation mark.] Sorry, but this compilation is only usable with Nero Burning ROM. Please find upgrade information at our Web site.'

The second time, I don't think this message appeared. But I still couldn't get Nero to burn, even though I specifically clicked on one of its icons that said (approximately): 'Click here to burn from a previously stored file.'

I was off-line at the time, and my regular computer was tied up, so I didn't go on the Web. And that's the state of play to this moment. But would any of you guys care to comment at this stage?!

Thanks - Ken41

first the Nero you need to update thats an older verison

you shouldnt need DVD43 for that dvd . DVD Shrink should handle it alone.

is the file still on your harddrive? if so download DVD Decrypter and you can burn it to disc with that program. heres a guide that should help ,you can download the software here too

Thanks, 'aabbccdd'. Agree about updating the Nero, but I still wonder why the version I installed didn't work for me. Burning is burning is burning, isn't it?

Secondly, I'm surprised that you say backing up MOSQUITO COAST shouldn't have needed a decrypter, in this case 'DVD43'. The movie is a commercial one, after all. And 'DVD Shrink' doesn't have a decrypting function, does it? Or am I mistaken?

Lastly, I'm not sure whether I should be downloading yet another program - albeit the esteemed 'DVD Decrypter' - when my main concern for now must surely be to make the program that came with my brand-new computer ('Sonic MyDVD') work for me! (Not to mention making Nero work!) But, yes, the files for MOSQUITO COAST are still on my computer, and I shan't remove them for a while.

Thanks - Ken41

yes DVD Shrink DOES have a decrypter. its a 1986 movie you dont need BOTH DVD43 and DVD Shrink that may be your problem DVD43 conflits with alot of programs.basically its not a very good program i would get rid of it.

what i would do is completely delete DVD43 and 'Sonic MyDVD' run CCleaner do a disc cleanup defrag then reboot, then update your Nero (yes the newer verison will not have as many bugs in it).

then download dvd decrypter(it will not hurt your machine) go to your c drive find the file right click it and you can burn with either your updated Nero or DVD Decrypter. use this guide for help using DVD Shrink and or DVD Decrypter. forget about the software that came with the PC

http://bbmayo.home.comcast.net/

remember to use good blank media (Taiyo Yuden and or Verbatim) and burn at 4x starting out

if you have BOTH DVD43 and AnyDVD loaded on your machine it will conflit, delete DVD43 right away

Again thanks, 'aabbccdd'. So a 'ripper' is a decrypter? On another forum I was told that 'ripping' was another name for burning! I'm feeling confused!

No, I don't have 'DVD43' and 'AnyDVD' installed together. I'm aware that they might conflict. 'AnyDVD' is on my main computer. 'DVD43' is on my new computer. (I read the small print in my agreement with 'AnyDVD' and it said that I was only allowed to use their product on one computer.)

With all respect, 'aabbccdd', I'm wondering if there is a second opinion from anyone here about exactly how I should proceed? We do agree, you and I, that I should update Nero (and I remember that I did so on my other computer after installing the same OEM Nero Suite, version 6.3.1.26, by going to the Nero website - then, I think, I installed a different version again, on advice from people at the Nero forum, because it was more stable: Nero Burning ROM 6 6 0 18, I believe).

I'm reluctant to ditch 'Sonic MyDVD' without even getting it to work on my computer! (And/or without knowing the reason why it hasn't worked for me so far.) Nonetheless, I may do all or most of the things that you have suggested!

Yes Nero 6.6.0.18 (the last version of 6 to autoburn w/ DVD Shrink)

http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe

There was someone here once who advocated the use of Sonic. He seemed to know what he was doing, but as he was the only voice, I chose a go the main stream direction myself. My PC came with Sonic also. A search of the Net reveals little help out there for MyDVD.

Okay, guys. Now please help me, if you will! Have downloaded both 'DVD Decrypter' and Nero 6.6.0.18 onto my new computer, and have installed them successfully. And on my C: drive are the output files for MOSQUITO COAST which I made with 'DVD Shrink'. Specifically, the folder C:\MOSQ UITO_COAST contains an AUDIO_TS folder (empty) and a VIDEO_TS folder (containing 8 files). Please, how do I direct either 'DVD Decrypter' or 'Nero' to burn me a disc of the film MOSQUITO COAST from those files? (The blank disc for this will go in my D: drive = the CD/DVD drawer of my computer.)

I was afraid of that reply, 'tranquash'!!!

My response is: which part? There are so many! Note: I have bookmarked the site in question and will try to study it over the rest of this year. But surely I've given enough information in my posts about the specifics of my problem to get a specific answer at this stage?

I've said that the files for MOSQUITO COAST are on my C: drive, waiting to be converted into a backup DVD (i.e., burned). Please, what is the next step, using 'DVD Decrypter' (downloaded at the suggestion of 'aabbccdd'), or 'Nero', or 'DVD Shrink', to get that to happen?

Without some direct pointers at this stage, I'm afraid I may have to drop the whole matter for now.

Anyone?

follow what i said at bottom of this post the edit part

Here is a second opinion, do what aabbccdd said in his post. i agree with him, get rid of DVD43 and sonicMyDVD, i have used sonicDVD in the past and it was not a good program at all! Nero waaaay better.
shrink can do older movies just not new ones

And ripping is not the same as burning, Ripping is putting the Moive on ur HDD

here is the guide for Nero burning rom
http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/guides.htm

also this is what i use
This is the combo I use and all are FREEEEEEEEEEE

1. DVDFab decrypter(Free) to rip the movie to the HDD
http://www.dvdidle.com/free.htm
or Good ol' DVD Decrypter

2. VOBblanker(Free) (Not always needed) to clean and fix the movie
http://jsoto.posunplugged.com/vobblanker.htm

here is a guide for VobBlanker
http://www.dvdr-digest.com/articles/article_vobblanker_page1.html

3. DVD shrink(free) to make it fit on a SL(4.7G) disk

4.Burn with whatever program u want (free way, ImgBurn or DVD Decrypter)

Perfect 100% backup of any Movie Guaranteed, OF COURSE with QUALITY MEDIA

Edit- okay just have so patience

Go and look at the folder u ripped the one on C: drive and see how big it is? if it is lower then 4.35G then u dont have to shrink it and u can burn it using the guide for burning rom in my post.

If it is bigger than 4.35G then u need to run it thru DVD Shrink.
follow this guide but instead of open disk u open folder and select the one on your c drive

Thanks, '300bowler'. I'll try tomorrow to make 'Nero' do the burn, using the instructions from aabbccdd's site.

For what it's worth ... On the '1 Click DVD Copy' forums, 'DVD43' is currently being touted as the decrypter of preference if you don't want to fork out for 'AnyDVD'. The latest 'DVD43' is said to be particularly good. (Note: on my main computer I use '1 Click DVD Copy' with 'AnyDVD' and invariably get great results. It's on my NEW computer, where I'm wanting to use free software wherever possible, that I have installed 'DVD Shrink' and 'DVD43'.)

Also, may I say, with the greatest respect ... Perhaps the emphasis on 'Quality Media' CAN be pushed too hard! Certainly I use Verbatim discs for double-layer work. But for several years, when doing standard-disc copying, I've used an inexpensive Taiwanese brand of 4x disc bought from a particular shop here in Melbourne; and in all that time, using different stand-alone DVD-recorders as well as my computer which I bought last March, I don't think I've had a single failure (due to a disc, that is).

like the old saying goes you get what you pay for being DVD43 is free its NOT going to work as good as AnyDVD. personally i wouldnt let DVD43 near my machine but thats your choice.

i use CloneDVD 2 with AnyDVD theses are the best programs on the market if you want to give them a try

Ken,

Take it easy. You don't have to study these guides, just follow the steps to a succesful burn. In the link, you may want to click "Burn your DVD files using Nero", and it will take you from screen shot to screen shot. There's also a guide for shrink and decrypter. No big deal. Have a look, it's not complicated.

As I feared, I don't seem to have this version of Nero. The illustrations on aabbccdd's website don't match what I've got. The only references to Nero Burning ROM on my computer, when I clicked on Search, were two small documents, both called NeroBurningRom_eng, one of 332 KB, the other of 752 KB, in program Files.

I'll check further in the morning (in the PROPER morning, that is - it's already nearly 5 a.m. here, meaning I've been up all night).

hello Ken,

yeah u migth be right, but there wouldn't be half the questions on here at AD if people used only quality media

Check this out about low quality Media when u have time too

u can also check out this sticky
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/114809

one thing about crap media is they might play fine now but in a year or two they will probably start to pixalate, freeze, skip and not even play.

but its your choice to use whatever u want, just letting u know how quality does make a difference.

also if u want to use freeware programs to get it done use the combo in my post above. DVDfab decrypter>Shrink>ImgBurn

if u dont want to upgrade the Nero u can use IMGburn, it just came out with a new version that can burn ISO's and Video_TS folders, SWEEEEEEEEEET, heres the link

Ken,

Sorry mate, you're probably just too tired. Hope You'll be well rested when you read this. You have the correct version of Nero, 6.6.0.18. Go to "Start/Programs/Nero/Nero Burning ROM", and follow the guide...

Again, as aabbccdd mentioned, you can also try AnyDVD and CloneDVD 2, which are very user friendly, they have 3 weeks of trial period. Give it a try, and if you want to invest a little, you won't regret it. 300bowler also suggested a good combination of freeware.

Important reminder... Get rid of DVD43 and sonic, and always use good media.

Cheers!!! :p

Dear 'tranquash'. You're not following me. I go to Start/Programs/Nero - BUT Nero Burning ROM is not listed there. (More detail later.)

Also, you don't remember that I said that on my NEW computer (which this thread is referring to), I am not installing commercial products. I have 'AnyDVD' on my MAIN computer - it's a fantastic product.

Also, I've reported that 'DVD43' is highly regarded by the '1 Click DVD Copy' forums (and by the boss/head technician of LG Software, which makes '1 Click DVD Copy', whose name is Gregory), and from my experience it does do an excellent job.

Also, I've reported that this business of 'good media' can be pushed too hard, and that I've never experienced bad quality from the Taiwanese 4x DVD+RW discs that I regularly use. I mean: neither when making a disc nor years afterwards, when I play a disc back.

More to report, but later.

Thanks - Ken41

Guys, you have been greatly helpful in getting me to where I wanted to go - see following - but I must say that I'm surprised by how, on a 'DVD Shrink' forum, several of you seemed to want me to do anything but use 'DVD Shrink'!

I have now made a successful backup copy on my new computer of THE MOSQUITO COAST, using 'DVD Shrink' and nothing but 'DVD Shrink' (with 'DVD43' as decrypter)! 'DVD Shrink' made both the original output files and - tonight - was successful in burning me a backup disc from them.

Mind you, somewhere along the line my new computer's burning facility seems to have become activated where it wasn't activated previously. My guess is that registering 'Sonic MyDVD', which I did tonight, made the difference.

Now, let me report problems encountered along the way. Neither 'DVD Decrypter' nor 'Nero' would open the eight files contained in the VIDEO_TS folder on the C: drive (C:\MOSQUITO_COAST). Both programs gave me messages that these files, put there by 'DVD Shrink', were unsupported.

Hence, 'aabbccdd', when you suggested that I open 'DVD Decrypter', put it in ISO Write Mode, click on the folder 'Please select a file ...', and then find the file on the C: drive and burn it ('It's very easy'), your instructions proved unavailing! As I say, at this point 'DVD Decrypter' gave me this message: 'Invalid or unsupported image file format!' (repeated eight times, once for each of the eight files in the VIDEO_TS folder).

The same thing happened when I tried using the 'Burn DVD' facility of my copy of 'Nero'. (Note: my copy doesn't actually have the Nero Burning ROM that one or two of you guys wanted me to use. Not listed in those words, at least. That is, Nero Burning ROM isn't listed under Start/All Programs/ Nero, nor anywhere else that I could see.)

Now I'll go and make detailed notes for my future reference on exactly how tonight 'DVD Shrink' DID successfully use those files on my computer's C: drive to make me a handsome backup copy of THE MOSQUITO COAST.

Thanks again - Ken41

You have the wrong output from Shrink. The files are going to a folder on the hard disk [ok if you want to play it the PC].
You need an .iso file. When you hit Backup! on Shrink you need to select a Target device [Decrypter or Nero]. Nero has to be enabled in Shrink - Edit - Preferences - File I/O tab- check enable burning with Nero.

These are screens you will get after hitting Backup! on Shrink.

Also suggest checking Backup Quality settings.

Edit

You might want to slow down a litte and read some guides. Check out the default setting on the programs and the different options.

Like changing Shrink Preference - Target DVD size - switch from DVD-5
to Custom and enter something less than the 4464 MB. I use 4400 some use lets say 4364. This keeps from burning close to the edge of the DVD disk. Where you might run into bad spots on the disk.
Keep your burring speed down to 4x or maybe half the rated speed of the blank. You might want to buy some RW disks, since you will be making some coasters.

Heres a basic guide to Shrink.

Hi 'Noqoilpi'. You wrote: 'You have the wrong output from Shrink. The files are going to a folder on the hard disk.' You mean, they are going to a folder called C:\MOSQUITO_COAST (or whatever)? But they worked, no?!

You wrote: 'You need an .iso file.' I don't really understand .iso files, sorry ...

You wrote: 'When you hit Backup! on Shrink you need to select a Target device [Decrypter or Nero]. Nero has to be enabled in Shrink - Edit - Preferences - File I/O tab- check enable burning with Nero.'

'Nero' was indeed enabled there, and still is.

From my notes I see that after hitting 'Backup!' the following was shown ...

'Select backup target:' [Here was selected my computer's D: drive, i.e., the CD/DVD drawer where a burnable disc was inserted.]

'Select folder for temporary files:' [Here was selected C:\MOSQUITO_COAST.]

In the past, I believe that I have sometimes pointed 'DVD Shrink' to a 'Temp holding' folder on my Desktop. But there's no real difference, right?

As I have 'Nero', I don't really need 'DVD Decrypter', do I?

I note your point about checking Backup Quality settings.

Sorry I rarely use Nero with Shrink. No you do not need an .iso file with Nero. You also do not want a folder with AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders, the Nero temp folder will have .vob, .ifo and .bup files

Select your burner as target.
