Hi Everyone,

I have been having problems for a very long time with my DVD burner when in comes to burning DVD movies. Some of the time I go to burn DVDs and no problems occur, its fine. However, most of the time when I burn a DVD the program fails.

Let me give you specs first, I am using Nero 7 Ultra Burning Software, through DVD Shrink, with a Philips DVD8801 Burner. I have Windows XP.

For example I go to burn Prison Break discs, disc 1 and 2 both fail with Nero saying a write error has occured.

I have included the log from Nero below when I tried to burn Scream 3.

I have tried everything, I have replaced my burner, used three different types of media, updated Nero 7 and I am very frustrated. Thank you so much for helping me.

Hi andrew007
Can't see a whole heck of alot wrong here - but here are some suggestions:
Quote:
Nero API version: 7.2.3.2
Using interface version: 6.3.1.4
Still have some of Nero 6 left. So uninstall Nero (write down serial # 1st) - run the clean tools - then reinstall:
http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/us/Nero_6_CleanTool.html
http://ww2.nero.com/nero7/enu/Nero7_CleanTool.html

The recorder info in the log - Recorder: Version: 2D06 looks kinda of screwy - usually your drive and firmware version will be listed here.
Cleaning up Nero may help.

Dell pc? May need a firmware update but I can't find one.
Quote:
DiskPeripheral : Maxtor 7L250S0 nvatabus Port 2 ID 0 DMA: Off
Check and make sure DMA is on - using a nvidia controller Nero doesn't display DMA correctly. Here's a guide that will get you in the right direction of where to check. Your's should have something like 'let bios set' but will still show the transfer mode.

Great media. What other's have you tried?

Try 4x speed and see if that helps.

Another option to to use DVD Decrypter(free) to autoburn Shrink.
http://www.mrbass.org/dvdrip/

Open decrypter then go to mode>iso - check write. Pick the drive under destination then set the burn speed. Close decrypter.
Open shrink and do your thing then under 'select backup target' pick 'iso and burn w/ DVD Decrypter. Shrink will open decrypter when ready to burn.

Try these and let us know how it goes - good, bad or otherwise.

First Off, I want to thank you binkie7 for taking the time to respond in such detail, this problem has been plaguing me for months...

Anyways, I used the clean tools for both the 6th and 7th versions of Nero and I then reinstalled Nero 7.

Using the method described in the guide to check the DMA, it says that my Primary and Secondary drives both have "DMA if Available"

I'm not quite sure what you mean by this below, but the DMA is apparently enabled.

Ok, Media, the brand I am using is some cheap DVD-R 8X, however, I tried Philips and Maxell DVD+R (both 16X max). I this guys over from a computer IT company and he said that my drive will be unable to use 16X Disc because no new firmware is present. So he said buy 8X and sure enough, went and bought the new discs, problem shows up again.

I have tried using DVD Decrypter via DVD Shrink in the past but come up with the same results, a failure, the error saying 'Invalid Write Address.'

After all this I tried again, with Nero 7 via DVD Shrink at 4x speed and it worked! I still cannot fathom how a few things left from an old version can cause this much trouble. Damn company.

I'm gonna try something at 8x, would you reccomend burning at 4 or 8?

So I want to thank you again for helping me and if you have any other suggestions to help my burning experience, I would be much appreciative. THANKS!

No problemo andrew007 :)
Glad to hear 4x finally did the trick for you.

Ok for the drives - check under 'current transfer mode' in the ide controllers - should have something like 'ultra dma mode 4'.
The Maxtor hard drive has this nvatabus - from what I can tell is using a nvidia contoller or driver.

From you log above the media id TYG02 is one of the best ones but since it is there are fakes out there. To see if you have genuine TY look on the back of the dvd around the hub (may need a magnifying glass :) and see if you see this code GG00xxxx (x's represent #'s).

The others you have used use different manufacturers and some not very good. Could also be part of the problem. Maxell is good stuff if made in Japan only.

16x speed media is probably okay for this drive - it is a 16x drive - it's finding what media this drive likes.
Good media to use is Taiyo Yuden (look for made in Japan only Sony & Fuji instore) or Verbatim.

You can try 8x and see what happens - but for the ones you are using I'd stick w/ 4x for now.
Hope this helps!

You know andrew: I hope this teaches you: Program Updates are NOT always a good thing. If a system you have works, think twice about changing it.

I thought I was making myself better by installing Nero 7 and I ended up with the ecact trouble you had and the exact fix that was given. Ultimately, Since the version of Nero I was using, versioon 6.3.1.6, works well, and has never NOT detected any burner of mine, and has always burned flawlessly as Max speed for all media, I decided to go back to 6.3.1.6 and STAY there.

And now I have very few problems burning.

I did have an era a few months back where I could not burn Dual Layer, but it turned out that my A-Open DUW 1616/ARR was actually a BAD burner: So I gave it away and bought an LG for 50 bucks.

Really, most problems with DVD burners are hardware related.

Another thing to look out for is any program that installs ASAPI. If you install it, you gotta stick with it. A Sony DVD authoring program installed that for me, and I have to leave it in.

Thanks, XweAponX, good tip, ur probably right, at times I did consider replacing for a LG burner, but dell replaced my original Philips DVD8701 and gave me the DVD8801. Thought it would make a difference...but it didnt.

So what do you think about burning speeds, I mean I usually just put it on 8x times but I guess that 4x might be better for me.

O and binkie btw, the media doesn't have the GG00 Code so I guess I got fakes :). Got them from 'the Source'...

I did notice when i replaced my burner that the label said BenQ and i did some research and alot of people say that this Philips drive is the BenQ 1650. A Lot of people online, on this forum and others like it say its better to crossflash it to a BenQ drive with the new firmware. Personally, Im a bit scared cause this type of thing can kill ur drive, what do u think?

Thanks both of you again..

Hey andrew007
You always run a somewhat risk crossflashing so the choice is your's.
If the drive is still under warranty may not be a good idea (just my 2 cents). Crossflashing will void any warranties - probably your biggest risk.
That Philips you have is a BenQ 1650.
Another thing you may want to check is the jumper pins. Some Dell's prefer that both drives be set to cable select (I would hope though that they would have sent this info w/ the drive or had the jumper already set to it - if that's the case).
Here's a guide on crossflasing to the Benq:
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=171380

editted to add: yep if you didn't see that code on the media - fakes indeed!

@Binkie

You absolutely right about cable select for jumper pins for Dell pcs. I'm on my third, and all have been cable select for burners and HDDs. You have to find this on your own from manuals when installing these devices.
