hi guys, ok im completly new to ps2.my friend gave me his ps2 becuase he nevers plays with it buthe warned me that it had some problems with it. fist of that i noticed is that when i open the drive to put in a game it closes almost instantly?!
second he didn have the wires for it so i used my ps1 wire to connect it to the tv but it was all fuzy. i could here the noise but noo complete picture. i tried that wire with my ps1 and the same thing happened maybe its the wire?
ok theses are the problems im facing at the moment i havent seen if it actually plays the games but i want to fix these first! please guys help me out im eager to play!!

and aperently my friend who gave me the ps2 said that when he tryed to play the games it had said disc read errors what ever that means

Ok you have to get a new cable.
Next you mighjt have a laser problem it may just need to be cleaned or the problem might be much worse.
Try playing some audio cd's or ps1 disks in it then tell me what happens.
I'll help you through this ok man ;)

thanks alotman! hey ive been reading on the net about disck read error messages and thety said you have to clean your ps2 and change the level of the lense? i don't know if thats what needs to be done but the previouse owner gave it to me and said thats what was wrong! and also does tv connector thing have to specifectly only for ps2? or can i use ps1 aswell? and also what about the disk tray closing almost instantly when i open it? oh and my ps2 is a SCPH-39003

yeah i got the wire to connect to the tv and i can confirm that it says Disc read error!!! also when i press browser for it to read the disc the disc doesn seem to spin?!i tried moving the wite roter blade clockwise to different positionsbut still no luck ?what shall ido ive tried all cds and ps1 and ps2 games what shall i do

If you've found a tutorial on how to adjust the lens hight then follow the instructions very carefully ok.

However i recommend a lens change. It's not pocket busting about $30 or more you'll also have to pay for installation if you're not gpnna put it in youself.

ok i completly disasembled my ps2 today and now the tray stays open!also when i put the game in the disc isn't spinning at all but the laser is working! i go to 'browser' and it says reading disc but the disc is not spinning?! i think that if it was spinning it would work!! what do you think i should? maybe i didn't connect the wire properly? any help? im nearly there

check to make sure all the connections to the drive are properly plugged in and connected. I hope that there isn't a prob with the motor that spinns the drive

yeah the i diss assembled it again and hen re essembnled it and it conne t4ed the the ribbons again and the disc spins for again 10 seconds and the laser is working but it still says disc read error

It's saying disk read error because the lasers isn't reading the disk thats why the disk spins for ten seconds then stops. The drive stops the disk when the laser cant read anything and then gives you the disk read error. You might have to clean and/or adjust the laser hight.

You laser is probably toast then. Does it read any type of disc? Audio, PS1, PS2 CD, etc???

um not all laser from other ps2 would work... but some will... Is there a red light coming from the laser... dont look straight at it but place a thin paper on top on the laser to see it u could see a red dot. U might need to adjust the pots. I dont like doing this. Well good luck.

ok i tightene the screw on the laser arm and now it plays audio cd's only! i moved the white gear arund in every position but it still; didn play games! and i tightned and untightened the laser screw and it still didn play games but it plays audio cd's is there any other way? how do i adjust the pots may thats fix it?! please guyts im realy deperate

it sounds like the laser is pretty much dead.theres nothing you can do except replace it.

Move the DVD pot only on the rigt of the picts. U might want to mark the spot where it is right now so u could get back to it. move it a little at a time. The DVD pots are under the laser. Dont move the cd pots since it still works. U might get it to work if this doesnt u hafta replace the laser which is pricy.

Yea put the white gear in defult. And the ohms u will need something to measure it... i forget what it was called... U could just turn it just a tiny bit and put it back in and see if it works, but will take a while.
