Hi all,

I love dvdshrink. It?s an amazing tool. But I?ve run across a problem with it on a few occasions. Here?s a given example:

I initially received a dvd of V For Vendetta (from a friend) in which the movie had been shrunk to about 2 gigs in size ? taking up roughly half of a single-layer disk. I don?t know what had been used to shrink it, but I was surprisingly impressed with the quality; There were few compression artifacts visible during the viewing. Even so, I decided to use dvdshrink to simply copy the movie from a purchased dvd to a new movie-only dvd, expecting for an improvement in quality over the original 2 gig version that I?d seen before.

Even though, in this circumstance, the movie was *definitely* not actually shrunk by dvdshrink, there were definitely more visible compression artifacts ( <<I hope that this is the proper term) than on the original purchased dvd that the copy was derived from -- or even the 2 gig version of the movie that I had initially seen. This just doesn?t make sense. Why would the quality of this video degrade if the video is (seemingly) only being copied?.not shrunk. Nonetheless, this problem has occurred with more than just this one dvd.

So?..I?m curious?..If I (am able to) use the ?backup quality settings? while using dvdshrink ? even when I am not actually shrinking a movie, might this improve the quality of the resulting dvd? How would I go about making those settings available to me when a movie is not in need of being shrunk (such options are by default greyed out in this circumstance)?

Do you otherwise have any suggestions as to how to remedy this problem?
Money?s tight, so buying some app is not an option at this point, but all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

hi. hmmm? interesting. loss of quality doesn't make sense if there is no compression. the reason you can't use the "backup quality settings" in shrink when not compressing (i.e. 100%) is because supposedly you are simply re-writing every pixel from the original, so there would be no way to improve the quality. i'd like to see some knowledgeable person provide an explanation for what you are experiencing so i can learn something more about it, because it's a mystery to me. good luck!

What brand of media r u using?
Low quality media could cause some artifacts(pixelation)

However like surfgeo said if u are not srinking(Compressing) the movie than it should look exactly like the original DVD

@300bowler

thanks for that. i didn't know that diminished picture quality was another possible effect of using lower quality media. i knew about freezing, skipping, etc., but not pixelation. another reason (and i didn't even know it) i'm glad i started using verbatim!

i'll be curious to see what davo_wavo has to to say about the media he uses. could it be any difference (bitrate or something) in the original disk that might account for some disks looking as good as the original and others not, even though both are copied at 100%?
