there are several solutions suggested using different software combinations. people say ripit4me works, and one says dvdfab -> vobblanker -> shrink worked for them. let us know what you do and what works and doesn't.

Had the same problem spiritwolf. I used DVDFabDecrypter, then process it through VOBBlanker, then transcode with DVDShrink. I get "out of memory" message. Can any one provide a solution(s)?

several people report on various threads re "silent hill", as wymant does here, that they have used dvdfab, vobblanker and shrink and get an error message in shrink, or that they used ripit4me and shrink reports an error. yet other folks say they used the same programs with the same dvd title and that they get successfully backup that title. i'm wondering if you have any explanation for that, assuming they all have the current versions of the software. rarely does anyone mention what region they have. wondering if that could be a factor since i have read that different regions sometimes have different kinds and level of encryption. if the region variation is involved in the problems some are having is sending the log file to the appropriate software creators the only solution?

Several reasons for problems, different regions, bad presses, programs need updated or they can't handle this certain variation of protection so the will be updated, computer specs, DMA, or user error. The list is long. AnyDVD, DVD43, and DVD Fab all rely on needing updates for new protected movies. RipIt4Me creates a PSL file on the fly so does not rely on an update to fix the protection errors, that is why I consider it a little better. All you can do is keep your proggy's updated, and they should work. Everytime we get a new release with ARccOS and Puppetlock this happens, many have no problems yet others do. It is just trial and error until you find the right combo that works. I have checked the forums and there are only a few posts about this movie so far, as it hits other markets there will be more, but all the fixes will be in by then.

@arniebear
thanks for that answer/info. that's what i thought: no simple answer.
i swear, i have, at least once, used every software i had (fab, blanker, shrink, ripit4me) and made multiple attempts with a disk and it wouldn't work (hanging up some software or other at different points). came back the next day, no updates or changes of any kind, and it worked the first try, no problems.
thanks again for all your help to so many folks here, including me!

You are welcome, if all programs worked perfectly then there would be no posts to answer, lol. I would then get bored. AnyDVD is great but it takes all the fun out burning, it is getting to play with all the programs and finding out how they work/if the work that is fun. I like a challenge :)

I will give it another try using the latest version of DVDFabDecrypter and VOB Blanker. If that doesn't work then I'll try some of the other methods provided. Will keep you all inform.

problem solved! I have had 100% success by simply down-gradeing my DVDFab to the proir version. Must be a glitch in the beta program.. anyway, got it to work.. hope the same to you all.. peace.

All,
I had success backing up Silent Hill. I used DVDFabDecrypter version 2.9.8.3 instead of version 2.9.8.5 beta3. Then pass it through VOB Blanker then transcode with DVD Shrink. No more out of memory error message.

Quote: I had success backing up Silent Hill
this is good news, i was getting worried there at the beginning of this post.i have been fortunate enough(so far)to not have any wierd errors or glitches with shrink(besides the usual cycleredundant)i know there are alternatives to shrink, but it was the first program i used to backup my movies back in 2003,and so far it hasnt let me down!

alkohol is the man when it comes to "how to" guides. if only i had more time to my pc instead of WORKing all of the time. thanks again alkohol!

@newbies or those needed helps
Well, since a lot of newbies (members) are having issues left to right, I thought I'll just throw in a very basic guide "DVDFAB Decrypter + VobBlanker" for those that are clueless and or needed helps. I highly recommend to post process the VIDEO_TS.IFO file through VobBlanker for "security" purpose.
**NOTE: The guide has been tested and it worked -- matter of fact, I've tested both ways, in combo with VobBlanker and without. Nero Recode 2 can handle the job either way easily. However, if you're the few (like me) that like to BLANK out junks from your movie/dvds, then it's wise to post process with VobBlanker, plus it helps to correct any minor structures.
**NOTE: I'm using DVDFAB Decrypter 2.9.8.3 and it took 18 minutes to rip SILENT HILL (US, Region 1)
<<< STEP 1: Rip the movie using DVDFAB Decryptery >>>
<<< STEP 2: Process the VIDEO_TS.IFO file through VobBlanker >>>
**NOTE: for this movie, I blanked out all trailers, except "Ghost Rider" only. To Blank out any scene or vTS that's basically junk, just click on any VTS, play/preview it, then use BLANK button on the "Right" or double click on PGC entry, Highlight any Cell #, Prev/Cut to play, then BLANK it out.
And now the rest is history, meaning free of junks/craps, so it should be super easy on DVD Shrink, Nero Recode 2, DVD-RB Pro or any of your desire engines. Enjoy your backup and happy burning.
