Nero and Roxio don't always play well so uninstall Roxio and run the zap tool.

Looks as if you've still got this little piece of evil on your PC according to your burn log...Binkie has asked you to remove it in her first post in this thread, it is good advice.

Hi I'm actually not sure how to remove the roxio because I dont know what program it belongs to. I think I may have fixed the writer anyway as it was set in pio mode. The old writer wasn't so I dont know what was up with that one, but this one is taking about 20 minutes, which is an improvement, but if anyone has any other suggestions to speed it up a little I would be grateful.

p.s. I have had a look around and apparently the wire that the man used probably isn't the right one as it needs 80wire IDE cable. So I suppose I will buy one, though which one I dont know as there seems to be a lot of different types, and either get him to put it in or attempt to do it myself, although I have no idea how to!

Hi Sara82
If you are using a 40 pin cable the highest your transfer mode will be is Ultra DMA 2.
So if you didn't uninstall the ide channel go ahead & do that 1st than check the 'current transfer mode'. Here's a guide if needed:
http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/checking%20DMA.pdf

Then check the current transfer mode. If it has Ultra DMA 4 - than you are using the right cable. If not getting a faster cable will help speed things up some. Look for ATA 133 or 80 wire. The 80 pin/ATA133 will have blue, black & grey connectors. The 40 pin has grey connectors.
Any pc store will carry these cables.
They really aren't that hard to change. We can help if you like.

Hi Binkie thanks for all your help. When I found that I had pio in the secondary channel I uninstalled it and let it load again when it rebooted, and it seems to have helped the speed. Do I have to uninstall all the channels even if they are in dma mode so that they will reboot in ultra 4? I have two primary channels and two secondary.

Primary channel device 0 ultra mode 6
dma if available device 1 not applicable
primary channel
dma if available: device 0 N/A
" " device 1 N/A
secondary channel
dma if available device 0 N/A
" " Device 1 N/A
Secondary channel
device 0 ultra mode 2
device 1 ultra mode 2

I hope this might help. It seems strange that I have ultra mode 6 in one of the channels. As long as I buy an 80 pin cable is there any way that I can go wrong? Do they have to be compatible or have male or female parts?
Thanks again for all your help

The hard drive being in a higher DMA mode - looks like this drive is connected w/ the 80 pin cable.

The other 2 drives look like they are using a 40 pin cable since you did the install thing. The Pioneer will support Ultra DMA 4 with an 80 pin - not sure about the other drive listed on the transfer that it will support.

Can't really go wrong w/ a new cable. You can either get the flat ribbon or the round cable ones. No female/male parts just 3 connectors - one to the port on the motherboard and 2 for drives.

No problem on the help :) Hope this has helped!

Thanks for replying. I had a look around for the cable

# Round IDE cables: Support upto 133MHz drives/motherboards
# Look good
# Improve air circulation in case, helping to keep it cooler
# Backwardly compatible with 100 and 66 MHz drives and motherboards.
# Easier to route around case and to keep tidy
# Works with IDE Hardrives, CD-Rom (readers and routers) and DVD (readers and writers).
# May improve reading and writing speeds over ribbon cables for Fast IDE drives and DVD writers

Does this sound right to you? From the picture it looked like there were 3 connectors, but I am not sure about the mhz thing. I think it said it had a length of 90 cm so I think that should be long enough.
Thanks again Binkie

Sounds right - buying online you can usually find tons of them all pretty inexpensive.
The 90cm should be long enuf - standard tower w/ 2 drives.
Using the 80 pin will help some with total time - the one drive (pioneer) will use Ultra DMA 4.
When you put in the new cable may have to do the unisntall ide channel thing again to get it in that mode.

Hi Binkie, thanks for helping out again. Yesterday I tried to change the cable myself, dont ask me why. I pulled out the grey cable which I think is a 40wire, then I put the black connector of the new wire in the dvd-rom, the grey in the cd rom and the blue in a blue connector in the motherboard, I later changed it to a black connector on the motherboard. Neither made any difference in speed. I later unplugged all that I put the grey cable back in. I have looked around and seen that I should put the grey cable in the cd-rom and let that go to the black connector on the motherboard. Then I should get the new wire and put the black connector in the dvd-rom and put the blue connector in the blue slot on the motherboard, but it also says that I have to change both drives to masters and I have no idea how to do that. Does that sound right to you?
I'm in the uk, I remembered that you seemed to be in a different time zone from last time, so thats why I was looking around.

Thanks again, I probably would have put a hammer through the computer without your help!

It is actually not recommended to have both drives set the same....the drive at the end of the connection should be set as Master and the intermediately connected drive should be set to slave. To see how the drives are set up, look at the back of the drive...there should be six pins (3 rows of two) with a jumper ("U" shaped clip) on only one of the sets. There should be markings on the back of the drive labeled as such....MA (master), SL (slave) and CS (cable select). To change the settings of the drive use a pair of needle nose pliers ( sometimes you can get them out with your fingernails) to move the jumper to the appropriate position.

Let us know if this takes care of the problem.

Hi Thanks for replying, and sorry I have taken so long to reply, I had some other stuff come up. I tried it like you said with the dvd-rom as the slave and it hasn't improved the speeds, so not really sure whats going on. One thing I've noticed is that Nero recode takes about 30 seconds to check discs and frames/sec is always at 0.00. I think I will post in the Nero forum about this problem.
Thanks again
