Ok let's see
Quote:
Recorder: <HL-DT-ST DVD+RW GCA-4040N>Version: C108

Your drive is a bit older - only writes to +R media and max speed for +RW discs is 2.4x, 4x for +R - reason your's burn are at that speed.

Your drive fully recognizes this media but best to keep the firmware up to date - the latest is C11. This would help w/ probably 8x media - 16x media may be pushing it.
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1931

Might be time for a replacement - good ones w/ higher speeds that are pretty cheap
Quote:
CdRomPeripheral : HL-DT-ST DVD+RW GCA-4040N atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: Off

Your drive is in the slooow PIO mode - turn DMA back on. Here's a guide:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/260038

Everything else is fine. If you want to speed things up and have better compatability w/ new media - new drive time.
Can offer good online stores w/ good drives & prices depending on where you are too if you like.

Another thing to do regularly if not already - just some pc basics:
disc cleanup, system defrag, run antivirus/spyware scans (should be on anyhow but at least do a weekly scan)

Well calling it a night now :)

Oh and I almost forgot my manners - Welcome to aD EFFEDUP

If you have questions post back - me or someone can catch them

Tried updating firmware, but have no idea which to choose.
Did everything else and speed is still 2.4

For the frimware you want C111 - just click on that hyperlink to download.

2.4x is as fast as this burner will burn on RW media. Will only burn to +R media at a max of 4x. The firmware will help if you use other brands/rated burn speeds of media.
Turning DMA back on for the drive will help esp. with the ripping speed.

If you want faster burning speeds than it's time look for a new drive.
Good ones are pretty cheap now a days.

No way - this has not beaten you!
Believe me there is not a copy protection out there right now that any program I linked you to can't beat.
I've done probably all of the 'harder' ones using different programs.

Chicken Little can be done. It's a Disney & has Macrovision's Ripguard on it w/ a few bad sectors and such.
Run those ripped files from dvdfab decrypter thru VobBlanker. Then open those files (from VobBlanker) in Shrink. (see 1st page for guide)
Can't let them beat you now can you :)

Dont give up like Binkie said, all u have to do is use VobBlanker before using shrink it only takes 3-5 mins for VobBlanker to do its thing. Any movie can be backed up, u just happen to pick a more diffucult one being a Disney.
just follow this guide(Only the VobBlanker part) then continue as usual with shrink.
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/334154

Ps. Disney and Sony movies are the toughest to do but can be done with the help of VobBlanker.

Hope u continue with the process ;)

Hey 300bowler
Hopefully EFFEDUP won't throw in the towel just yet :)
Just picked 2 disney movies that have the 'newer' crap on them. Nothing that can't be handled like you said too.
I wouldn't throw in the towel :)

Hey EFFEDUP
What programs have you tried? Have you tried dvdfab decrypter/vobblanker or RipIt4Me?

Remember Shrink is no longer updated so it's going to need the help of the programs above.

The error you're getting is one Shrink will give if it can't handle the copy protection.

What movie is it?

Ok then you need to try one of these 3 ways:
dvdfab decrypter/vobblanker:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/334154

RipIt4Me:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/360110

These are free and the links also have step by step guides.

Or not free but has a 21 day trial is AnyDVD. Just run that in the background w/ Shrink. http://slysoft.com

Try one of the 3 - these will handle all the newer movies.

Once you have the settings (only a few maybe that I remember) it will all point in the steps it needs.

AnyDVD is a great program to use. Very simple and stays updated to handle the new stuff.

Sounds like you are on your way to a successful backup :)

AnyDVD won't take any longer w/ Shrink - it's really unnoticeable.

Did you install AnyDVD?

Do you see a red fox in the system tray?

What movie is this?

Ok do you see the red fox (see pic above)? By default when you installed AnyDVD it's on. It runs in the background. There is no time difference using it.

Did you change any of settings in Shrink - like checked 'deep analysis' or 'quality enhancement'. This would be in 'quality settings' tab when you click back up.
