I have a emachines T3104. And am using a sony drx-710UL external burner hooked up through a 2.0 USB port. I checked the Ide settings in the device manager and each channel says "DMA if available" and it still takes about 40-50 minutes to write the dvd. The burning process seems fine.

(AMD3100+, 256Mb Ram, 100Gb HD)

Hi.

Does it take a long time to rip from that burner as well?

What format and brand of media are you using?

In Device Manager when you expand the Universal Serial Bus Controllers category does it say Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller? If not, you likely have USB 1.

Im using Sony DVD+R Blank media. And It takes about 25-30 minutes to burn also. Im at work right now so i cant check into the usb. But the emachines web site says that it has the 2.0 usb ports, is that diffrent then what you were referring too?

wandering,
If you are talking about the trancoding process taking about 40+ minutes then I think if you just increase the ram to 512 that will speed you up. 256 ram is the bare minimum. 25+ minutes to burn the DVD ( if you are doing movie only ) means you are burning at about 2X. You can speed the burn up by increasing the speed to 4X

25-30 minutes to rip (which is what I think you meant based on the question) is not necessarily slow if your burner has a riplock for commercial DVDs in the firmware. This would need to be disabled to rip faster. If you're using DVD Shrink to process directly from the DVD, 25-30 minutes would not be unusual if a lot of compression is required. 40-50 minutes to burn a single layer disk is way too long.

I think i will invest in the RAM chip this weekend. And Check on the other things when i get home from work tonight. while we are on the subject can anyone give me an idea what are the main factors in determining the burning process on the dvds other then what i'm burning. Should i invest in a internal burner? I Absolutely hate waiting so long to burn one movie.
