I got this to work, I am more curious of the 'why' this happened.

I was backing up 'Cast Away' today. I used Nero Recode 2 with AnyDVD in the background. It went through the encoding process and all that just fine. I put in my media (Verbatim 16x DVD+R). I closed the tray and an error message popped up saying that I had the wrong type of media that this movie required DVD+R DL. I am assuming the DL means Dual Layer... but why would it require that? It has never done that before.

So, I rip the movie to my HD via Shrink and tried to use Nero to burn it. I got the same error. So, then I try to use Shrink to burn and it worked perfectly. Crystal clear copy of just the movie.

Anyone have any ideas of what caused this?

Hi Cinch
hmmm 2 things come to mind that might cause this. In recode did you maybe change the target size to DVD-9? (DVD+R DL is dual layer or DVD-9)
Did you see any red in the bottom bar in recode?

When you ripped w/ Shrink what was the folder size?

Shrink uses Nero to burn unless you picked like DVD Decrypter to burn.

Hi Binkie,

Nope, I did do a custom size to stay away from the edges, but not to DVD-9.

Nope, no red. It was all green with Recode registering a compression of 79%

4.3 GB was the size of the folder.

I have always used Shrink/Nero to burn or straight up Nero Recode. Like I said this was just an odd thing that totally baffled me.

Yep that is odd & baffling- only thing I can think of is maybe the folder size was 4.36 or a little higher. Anything over 4.34 or 4.35 may give you the message insert a DVD-9.
Don't remember having any issue w/ this dvd though on size but it's been awhile.

Hi Binkie,

I tried to backup another movie last night and the exact same thing happened. Is there a way I can reset the sttings on Nero or how do I go about fixing this so I can backup with Nero without having to go through Shrink?

Thanks for the help.

Hi Cinch
Try this in Recode have 'fit to target' checked (usually is by default) then under that pick 'custom' and type in 4360. See if that does the trick.
If there is another audio you can remove - remove it. I usually just keep 5.1 channel.
You can also disable any special features you don't want too.

Hopefully one of these will do it for you.

Hey Binkie,

Me again. :-)

I did as you suggested, but only changed the target size to what you suggested, 4360, because the rest I already did/do.

I only backup the main movie, and keep the one audio stream for all my movies.

Anyway, after doing that, when it was time to put the blank media in, it took the DVD +R and copied it.

So, whatever you had me do worked...

Thanks much my friend.

You're very welcome cinch :)
Looks like Recode just needed that little reduction in file size to get it to fit to the disc.

Happy Burning!
