I have acquired a set of Battlestar Galactica season 1, and I want to back them up. The problem is with just one of the discs, the rest were fine for Shrink. Business as usual. But this one, which will play on my computer and my players, hangs up and makes almost a grinding sound as it spins in my burner when I first start DVD Shrink's initial command "Open Disc". (where it does the quick analysis) It grunts and groans, and I get that annoying hourglass, but it just keeps on grinding until I give up and try to close the program or eject the disc. Then I get a "Program not responding" and I have a hassle getting Shrink to close.

As I said, the other discs were like butter. Any ideas? If the disc wouldn't play it would be one thing. I'd just figure it's a bum disc. But I watched as it played on Windows media player using the same burner that it hung up in when I tried to shrink it. So I'm baffled and hoping someone can help me with this wierd glitch.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Did you try to rip it to the hard drive first with DVDDecrypter or DVDFab decrypter before using shrink?

I usually rip to the hard drive first, and then navigate to the folder with shrink. Then when shrink starts it is not using the disc at all, only the files.

That 1 disc may have special encryption on it. If it's encryption related, you can get a free 21 day trial of AnyDVD to get it to rip.

The newer encryption does some wierd things to dvd-shrink. I've had very similar issues as yours,as well as: Crc errors and Navigation errors. Also encryption related issues when shrink would open disc nalyze, but freeze up or gray out when dragging the main movie over. Shrink hasn't been updated in a couple of years.

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_...pers/anydvd.cfm

Very simple to use. Download it,and when you see the little red fox icon in the lower/right corner's utility tray-then it's running. No extra step is involved.

It's not only a background dvd ripper, but a cd ripper, and it will make your drive/s region free. It's also said to be able to rip damaged dvds.

First, thanks so much for the input!

I will reply in order. So to 9mmruger1, I am a newbie, and I don't really know what you mean by, "Did you try to rip it to the hard drive first with DVDDecrypter or DVDFab decrypter before using shrink?" I am not sure what you mean by the term "rip". I usually just load the master disc, open DVD Shrink, click "Open Disc", and it will do the quick read of the disc. Then I click on "Backup!" and it will do the long evaluation and encryption and create the files in the folder I have specified. When it's done I open Nero and burn the files from my hard drive to the blank disc, and that's that. As I said, all of the other discs in the set of Battlestar Galactica did this process perfectly except for the one in question. So show me where to look on the forum or the net to find information and instruction for using DVDDecrypter (I have that program but have never used it, and don't know how to use it) to rip the files and how to use shrink once they are ripped. But first explain what it means to "rip".

Next, to saugmon, I have read a lot about AnyDVD here on the forum, and I thought I would do what you said. So I downloaded it and got it on my machine, but it still couldn't get it to go. Same grindy sound from my burner, followed by a window saying something about its inability to handle this disc.

I packed the discs up and sent them back as defective, but when they send me another one I hope that I will be ready to burn it right, and so if either of you, or anyone else that can, will teach me what to do step by step I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks so much,

Fryerider

A lot of bad discs get out. Let us know when you get the replacement. Dvd players can get through those discs, with little issues. Dvd-rom drives aren't so lucky.

@fryerider

Ripping to the hard drive means extracting the files from the DVD and putting them into a folder on the hard driver prior to running them through shrink.

Sometime when shrink has difficulty with a particular disc, ripping to the hard drive would be a good option, as shrink would bypass the disc and use the files from the hard drive. Useing a program such as DVDFab decrypter would break any encryptions and extract the files from the DVD to the hard drive. You would then use shrink as normal with the files from the hard drive.

Visit the link in my signature, and take a look at the guides provided by bbmayo for using DVDDecrypter and DVDShrink as well as DVDFab Decrypter, DVDShrink, and DVDDecrypter. These are excellent and will greatly help you to understand the process.

There is also a great many informative threads at this forum that will provide you with a wealth of knowledge.

Cheers.

All I can say is that you guys are GREAT!! So much info and good stuff!!

Well, I downloaded and installed AnyDVD and CloneDVD, but once I had it on my machine everything started to move in slow motion, and my other programs, like my scanner, wouldn't open from their icons on my desktop. So I removed the programs from my machine, rebooted, and guess what -- everything is working right again! So what did I do wrong? So many on this forum rave about these programs, but they trashed my computer, so any insights would be appreciated.

9mmruger1, thank you SO MUCH for the link. When I have more time I will do a thorough investigation of the guides, and I really appreciate the tips. And now I can use cool DVD slang like "ripping" and know what it means! Who knows, maybe someday I won't be a lowly "newbie"?!

After years of copying VHS these DVD's have mystified me with their complexity. But it is interesting, and I am determined to know more, so thanks to all of you who have gone before me to figure these things out and come up with good methods. I really thought the AnyDVD/CloneDVD combo of software was going to simplify things for me, and I was completely ready to pay the $59 for a simpler method. but with it causing significant problems with my machine I'm now concerned about any further attempts at trying them. I still have the uninstalled downloads, so if someone can help me figure out the problems I will, with enthusiasm, reinstall them and try again. Let me know, and thanks!!!!

I have AnyDVD and CloneDVD2 installed on my system and they did not slow it down at all.

Couple of things that you might want to do. Defrag your Hard Drive. This will help. Make sure that your system has not slipped into PIO mode as compared to DMA mode. Visit this link to learn how:

http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/FAQ.htm

You will see a link for that says "Why is my computer running so slow?"

Click that. Make sure that you have adobe reader as it is a pdf file.

Keep me posted on your progress. I would definately install AnyDVD and CloneDVD2 again. They are well worth the money. I use them most of the time for my backups.

Cheers.

I haven't tried CloneDVD. For all my DVD-9 originals to DVD-5 blanks- DVD Shrink and autoburn with Nero. Every once in a while I turn on AnyDVD when the need arrises. Usually crc or illegal navigation error-which AnyDVD will crack if it's encryption related.

Some peeps have trouble with AnyDVD when it's not necessary. That's why I leave mine shut down, until I have to use it.

Dvd-5 to DVD-5 or DVD-9 to dvd-9: For those 1:1 backups-no compression- I'll use DVD Decrypter in Mode ISO read and burn with ImgBurn. A heck of a lot faster than using shrink in those situations.

Some programs can conflict with AnyDVD. If you have any other background rippers such as DVD43,then that may be the culprit.

OK. Let me answer in order.

First to sleepele. My machine is a brand new shiny, only about 3 months old. AMD 64 X2 Processor 4200+ w/ 2 Gigs of RAM.

Next, 9mmruger1, the programs didn't slow down my computer, they stopped me from being able to open any programs. Slow could be adjusted or fixed, but not having it open programs means no work getting done! I just defragged last week, and I have been burning other discs with Shrink and Nero several times today, so I wouldn't think that PIO mode is an issue. But I will check out your link on slow computers when I get a chance. The more I learn the better I will do!

Next, saugmon. You wrote, "Some peeps have trouble with AnyDVD when it's not necessary. That's why I leave mine shut down, until I have to use it." How would I do that? I noticed it was in my lower right corner with active programs that load when rebooting. How can I do what you have done?

Also you wrote, "Dvd-5 to DVD-5 or DVD-9 to dvd-9: For those 1:1 backups-no compression- I'll use DVD Decrypter in Mode ISO read and burn with ImgBurn. A heck of a lot faster than using shrink in those situations." All of this is Greek to me. I know a DVD-9 is a dual layer disc right? I don't know how to use DVD Decrypter, I don't know what "mode ISO read" is, and I don't know anything about burning with ImgBurn, as I have only used Nero. So if you can point me in the right direction concerning these things I know nothing about I would deeply appreciate it.

As always, thank you all so much for your interest and help. I don't take it for granted, believe me!! I am really trying to learn, so thanks for being great teachers. My new Verbatims are working a 1000 times better than the junk I had been buying, so I owe this forum a lot! So keep informing me!

the AnyDVD icon in your system tray. if it comes up just close it down with right clicking and hitting exit on the icon. also in the options for AnyDVD there should be a option to not auto start AnyDVD when computer boots up

Another note to saugmon.

You wrote: Some programs can conflict with AnyDVD. If you have any other background rippers such as DVD43,then that may be the culprit." I have other programs, like DVDDecripter and DVDShrink of course. Would they conflict with AnyDVD? I thought that would only happen if I had opened both of the programs at once. But I did open DVD Shrink after I loaded the disc in question.

Let me know.

I right click the red fox icon/click enable AnyDVD-at the top of the box- to turn it on or off and the icon will gray out.

Dvd43 is the only program that I am aware of that clashes with AnyDVD. Both of them being background rippers. I've also have or had:dvd decrypter,imgburn,sonic,CopyToDVD,-no trouble at all.

Roxio clashes with Nero. It's the drag to disc packet of roxio and the Incd of Nero that don't get along.

Reading and re-reading your posts has me wondering if you were doing a burn while doing other things. Backing up a DVD is very cpu intensive. You certainly have an excellent system, the specs are noteworthy, so you should not have any memory or processor issues.

Do you have a spyware program installed? When you have your system up and running check your task manager to see how much of the system resources are being used while just running. I am not sure how much you browse the net, but there is so much spyware and adware that attaches itself to your computer and take up system resources just running in the background. This can freeze up a computer. Overheating can as well. You should regularily blow out the dust bunnies that collect on the fans and processor.

I personally do not think that the AnyDVD and CloneDVD program is causing the issue, unless you have a corrupt download, I guess that could be possible. These programs just run to smoothly and errorless to be the culprit in my mind.

@saugmon

Hey buddy. Long time no chat. Hope all is well.
cheers.

i have this problem sometimes, bad backups, its usually bad batches of media. ive got the BSG season 1 also, and it plays fine. its all in the media you use to burn on. or perhaps your screensaver popped on during the encoding?..many factors are suspect when it comes to glitched backups.even on some of the better media, there is a chance of a glitch...but hey, what do you want for .30 cents lol

Ok, piece by piece -

You wrote: Reading and re-reading your posts has me wondering if you were doing a burn while doing other things. Backing up a DVD is very cpu intensive. You certainly have an excellent system, the specs are noteworthy, so you should not have any memory or processor issues.

My response: I likely have been doing other things when burning since I work at home and use the same system for work related things while burning in the background. Is that a bad thing? From your post I'm thinking so! And that would mean I'd have to stop working when I burn, which would change my pattern a lot! Let me know.

Next you asked: Do you have a spyware program installed? When you have your system up and running check your task manager to see how much of the system resources are being used while just running. I am not sure how much you browse the net, but there is so much spyware and adware that attaches itself to your computer and take up system resources just running in the background. This can freeze up a computer.

My response: One of my friends is the IT manager for his whole corporation. He took me on as an outside client and set me up on corporate Norton. It has all kinds of protection, and I haven't had a problem.

Then you wrote: Overheating can as well. You should regularily blow out the dust bunnies that collect on the fans and processor.

My response: I wouldn't know where to BEGIN to do this! It's a great idea though. Some instruction please!!

Last: I personally do not think that the AnyDVD and CloneDVD program is causing the issue, unless you have a corrupt download, I guess that could be possible. These programs just run too smoothly and errorless to be the culprit in my mind.

My response: I'm going to try them again soon. But for now I have great news! I got the replacement disc of Battlestar Galactica, and wham! The disc is being "ripped" by DVDShrink even as I write. (But again I'm using my computer while it's working, so I need to know if that's a bad thing!)

Seems like the disc had a glitch that didn't keep it from playing but threw my burner and DVDShrink for a loop. But no more problems now, and look at all I have learned from you folks!! (Insert my loud applause here!!)

Honestly I'm kind of happy that it happened due to all that I have learned from you wonderful people because of it. I truly want to thank all of you, and I'm sure it won't be the last of my questions. But please respond to the new questions I've asked you 9mmruger1. I want to do a better and better job and learn more and more. Who knows? Maybe someday I'LL be the one answering someone's questions?

Thanks again!!
