Hello. Newbie here. I started burning a little while ago (using DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15 and Nero 6). First several went OK, then all of a sudden, after burning appeared to complete successfully, the DVDs would not play when I would pop them in. All the files appear to have been copied onto the DVD (although I must admit I'm not sure which file(s) on the DVD are responsible for automatically playing when a DVD is popped in). My log file is pasted below. I have the same problem with several diffent DVD brands so I don't believe it's the media. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi.

Here's afew points based on a quick scan of your log.

Nero is out of date. Try version 6.6.0.18 by first uninstalling your current version taking care to write down your program serial number. Then download and run the Nero 6 Clean Tool:

http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/enu/Nero_6_CleanTool.html

Next download and install both 6.6.0.18 packages:

Package 1: http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Ner....0.18_no_yt.exe
Package 2: http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe

Your firmware is for a Sony VRD-VC20. I think that is what you have since it is an external device.

You're burning close to the outer edge of the disk. You might want to set your target size to 4400mb or less.

This is pretty poor quality media. Many of us recommend using Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, and Made in Japan labeled media like Fuji and Sony.

Burning at 16X is usually asking for trouble even with high quality media. Reduce your speed to 8X or even 4X for this poorer quality media. A good rule of thumb is to burn at 1/2 or less the rated speed of the media for a decent quality burn.

Thanks, I'll give that a try. 2 follow-up questions. You mentioned the firmware, but I'm not clear if you're suggesting I make any changes there (that is the Sony burner I'm using). Also, I don't know how to set the target size to 4400MB. Can you explain how/where I do that? Thanks.

Hi.

You have the most up to date firmware for the external Sony burner that exists as far as I know. I just wanted to get verification that you had that particular Sony branded external burner and not a Sony internal burner mounted in an external enclosure.

In whatever you're using for your DVD authoring program, there shuld be an option for specifying the target output size. If you're using DVD Shrink:

Edit -> Preferences -> Preferences tab

In the Target DVD size dropdown menu, select Custom" and then enter 4400 or 4350 in the MB box.
