Under the Start menu, when you select Nero from the Start -> Programs -> Nero, there should be several submenus. One is Nero Digital. Nero Recode should be under that submenu. Run the Nero InfoTool probably under Start -> Programs -> Nero -> Nero Toolkit -> Nero InfoTool. Post back what's shown under the Hardware tab.
Your ripping speed indicates a probable older/slower system. It may be the task of encoding by Shrink is overheating your processor causing the slowdown.

Do you know what type pf processor you have in your system? Pentium 2, P3, P4, Athlon, etc.? If not, try downloading the Belarc Advisor and see if that'll give you a correct report of your system specs.

I just recently began having the same problems with DVD Shrink taking two hours to encode. This happening on two computers that was doing it in less than 15 minutes a couple of weeks ago. The computer I am on now is running Windows Media Center, has an AMD 4200 dual processor, plenty of memory, Nero 6. I haven't downloaded anything lately that should have affected it, unless Explorer 7 is the culprit.

@ralski
Try Nero Recode and see if you have the same problem.
@m3incorp
Try Nero Recode instead of Shrink and see if the same problem results. Recode is part of the Nero suite and is by the same author as Shrink. It has a 30 day free trial if you don't have it.

Have you checked your DMA settings for your IDE channels?
Try resetting everything as follows:
Right click on My Computer and select Properties.
Click the Hardware tab and then the Device Manager button.
Click the "+" beside IDE/ATA ATAPI controllers.
Right click on Secondary IDE Channel and select Uninstall.
Right click on Primary IDE Channel and select Uninstall.
Restart your system.

sorry its not any of the burning programs iv tryed lots as well as shrinking ones and iv cheaked and made sure dma is on . i think it must be something with my computer that is causing DVD Shrink to run slow not any of the programs
maybe i need to up grade something in my computer that DVD Shrink uses? do you know how i might cheak the essential componants that require a strong dvd shrinking and burning computer?

I agree, it's likely a hardware issue. Most of the software issues have been addressed. I think your processor or mobo is likely the culprit. I can't say which. They are integral to one another really. If you're into building your own system, you can replace both the processor and mobo pretty cheaply these days.
AMD 64 3200+ plus mobo $116

I don't recommend this and only linked as an example re cost.

The motherboard links all components together, the CPU (processor), memory, and all other devices/peripherals. The CPU ultimately controls everything in the system--all processing, all input/output, all calculations.

ralski, I'm not thinking that is the problem. I'm running 4200+ dual core processors and the slowness just started happening to me a couple of weeks ago. It is just the encoding that is slow. Normal burns are alright. Hmm wonder what Sony might be up to....doing a little investigating...Did you try a restore point??

It has to be something unique to you guys since no one else is having any problems. Slow encoding usually means a processor problem. Either the processor itself or something constraining the I/O. Encoding is very processor intensive and if you have a problem with system overheating you'll experience a slowdown. Do you shutdown your system or keep it running? Do you notice any difference when you encode when you first startup as compared to later on? Does encoding seem to be faster at the beginning than the end? In ralski's case, he has a celeron processor which is pretty underwhelming from a processing standpoint, That in itself will cause slower encoding because of the reduced calculation processing capabilities. In other words, the celeron will have to work much harder and longer to do the same function as a full blown processor. But it shouldn't take 5 hours. It might take as much as twice the time of a full pentium under some conditions. To take 5 hours means the CPU is running exceptionally slow or the I/O is extremely slow. If you have a weak or marginal processor, encoding will highlight the problem for sure.
I guess another question I have is whether you find the same slowdown when encoding a title that requires little or no compression as compared to one that requires a lot?
@m3incorp
Did you ever try Nero Recode and was the encoding just as slow?
I don't think Sony is up to anything since the rest of us aren't having your issues.
If you were both experiencing slowness in other tasks like ripping and burning, I'd be more likely to suspect problems with your HDD or its bus. It's possible of course there is a memory problem causing a lot of do overs by the processor. It just doesn't seem like a software problem. But stranger things have happened. If you find the cause be sure to post back so others can benefit from your knowledge. There aren't too may things that can be said with certainty as to what's causing any particular problem because of the complex interactions in the system.

Update! Problem fixed: Though my IDE channels were showing Ultra 4 in transfer mode, I decided to uninstall and restore. Guess what, after a reinstall and defrag, I am back to normal. Thanks for everyone's help.

Just for my own info to see if I have ant idea what I'm looking at.In the Nero log files are both his dvd burner and cd writer set to the same as master/slave,shouldn't they be set as 1 a master and 1 a slave? I apologize if I am completely off base as I'm just trying to learn how you guys can read these log files.If we could learn how to read these things the world would be a better place.

Yes.
Post a log in the Nero forum and we'll take a look at it.

It's already posted on the first page of this thread by "ralski".He was the one looking for help.I just copied and pasted a little section of it and was wondering if I was reading this particular little section correctly.The way I read this little section was that his dvd burner and cd writer were both set to the same thing,either both as master or both as slave.I don't need a whole log read for help ,I was just wondering about this part for my own curiosity.Sorry if I made it appear I needed a whole log file read,just curious about this part if I was reading it correctly.

just a thought. did you recently change av scanners? the reason i ask is i've seen computer associates screw up the speed on many machines very badly. if you have zonealarm's security suite it uses ca's av scanner also. but i see they're going with kaspersky for the 2007 suite. i know it's a long shot. my experience helping many people with a slowness problem, indicates that all the rippers are affected. especially in ca's case. it hammers dvdshrink, Nero recode, and dvdclone. i don't know how many other av scanners affect the speed. but ones that don't include AVG,avast, norton, kaspersky, mcafee and trendmicro. i found spysweeper to not slow down the process, but cause an occassional glitch in a few movies. (my son's pc) i have yet to see ie7 cause any problems with encoding.
gwaz!
