ive been trying to find a program to shrink a AVI file, but leave most of the format the same. most programs convert everything. the files itself is 463 MB.

width - 128 pixels

height - 96 pixels

duration - 21 min.

bitrate - 32kbps

audio sample size - 4 bit

audio format - IMA ADPCM

frame rate - 14 frames/second

data rate - 364kbps

....any help will be greatly appreciated. thanks in advanced.

.avi's are huge. Most digital cameras record in this format. I'd recommend you find a file converter to convert .avi's to .wmv's. Several are available online for around $30 as downloads and most let you try them first. Just do a web search for .avi to .wmv conversion.

I have used one for quite some time, taking .avi flight test videos and converting them to .wmv format for imbedding in PowerPoint presentations. Typically, I get about a 5:1 compression or more with no obvious loss in video quality.

Another benefit for those that have encountered this problem: .wmv's will play back as imbedded PowerPoint videos on any PC with PowerPoint and Windows Media Player. But due to codec issues, .avi's will usually play back in Powerpoint only on the PC on which the briefing was generated. So your briefing, if generated with .avi's on one PC, likely will not play on any other. If you are going to imbed videos, make sure they are .wmv's.

AVI, wmv, it doesn't matter. Size still equals bitrate * length. If you want something to be smaller you have to reduce one or the other. Of course different formats are more efficient than others at different bitrates.

As for wmv. Other than the older codecs in ffmpeg the only implementation comes from MS and it is free, so no point paying a cent for some app to encode to wmv.
