I have bought a new computer with XP and a dvd writer, and wanted to back up some of my dvd's, and have downloaded dvd shrink. The problem is that every dvd i do when i have finished doing all the bits and pieces as per the guide, and I finally go to decrypt, I find that it just says it can't do it because of an unknown error.

Any ideas what this might be? Or a program I might have success with? I am not a whizz kid so not really sure what to do!!

Is the disc you are trying to back up scraped in any way??

Try decrypting/ripping it with something else.
Try DVD Decrypter.

It bhas the same problems with all of the dvd's I tried - 4. So don't think it is the disk, did not download decrypter because it saya that it is only for dvds less than 4.36 GB and the ones I want to back up are bigger than that. Is there anything else I can try?

DVD Decrypter will handle ANY size disc !

If you dont like it though , download SmartRipper from Afterdawn software section. This will work just as good , although I prefer to use Decrypter because of the 'ignore read errors' aspect.

I tried DVDdecrypter but it didn't work either - Nero said the file wasn't working properly. I would still like to use DVD Shrink if possible, I am running XP - could that be the problem?

Turn off the DMA on the DVD Writer and make sure your ASPI are up-to-date

somehow DVD Shrink has worked!! @I didn't change anything, just decided to try again!! will keep to that for the time being
