I have been using DVD Shrink w/Nero Burning Rom for over 2 years without a problem. Now, within the last week I have had 5 burn errors. I use Verbatim DVD-R 8x media, and my drive is a Sony DW D56A. I don't know if I am having a software, hardware, or media problem. I have checked to make sure DMA is on, and I have uninstalled and reinstalled the driver but I still continue to get errors. I am not getting errors on every burn, just sporadically. Suggestions? I appreciate the expertise here! Thanks in advance!

What burn errors are you getting? What version of Nero are you using?
Can you post a burn log?

If Nero 7...
C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\Core\NeroHistory.log

If Nero 6...
C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero\NeroHistory.log

Could be your burner is dying, you have loose cables or a slight possibility your PC is overheating. Maybe some component like your hdd is failing. What I key in on is:
Quote:
I am not getting errors on every burn, just sporadically.

This points to a hardware problem.
Problems with software usually result in an error with every burn, everything else being equal.
Thats why a log would be good to look at.
Check out your PC; open it up and make sure the cables are tight and all the cooing components and passages are clean. Gently blow out the burner with compressed canned air.

Have you installed any new programs lately?

Now would be a good time to back up any important files and serial numbers you may have.

Just a couple of things:

First, your firmware is not current....As near as I can tell from rpc1 anyhow....
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_result.php?kaj=1&isces

It does not list your current firmware. It does show an update though.

Here is a quote from the user's guide:

Quote:

Writable Format and Modes Supported
CD-R
Low speed CD-RW
High speed CD-RW
Ultra speed CD-RW
Ultra Plus speed CD-RW
DVD+R

DVD+R9 (Double layer)
here is what you are trying to burn:
Quote:

---- DVD Structure: Physical Format Information (00h) ----
Layer: 0, Address: 0 (0 h), AGID: 0; Length: 2050
Book Type: DVD-R

Here is a spec sheet from videohelp that says the same thing:
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters.php?...ch=Search&list=

OK... I spent a few minutes Googling around and could not find anything that tells me this drive is capable of burning -R media.

Get some Verbatim +R media and try that. I may be mistaken, but so far I can't find anything that says -R will work.

I appreciate your responses. I have been burning to DVD-R (Verbatim) discs for 3 years, so I don't think that is the problem. My burn errors are surfacing every 8th or 9th burn so I am beginning to think it is a problem with the drive. I plan on doing as you suggested and opening the PC and trying some maintenance steps. I should also probably mention that this is my second D56A drive because the original that came with the PC failed after 10 months. If this is yet another drive failure, does anyone have any suggestions for a replacement? The D56A is a slim drive (like a laptop) but my computer is a desktop (the drive is place vertically). Is an external drive the answer or is there a compatible drive I could use instead of the D56A? Thanks a ton for all of the help! I love this forum!

Sony DW-D56A (rebadged LiteOn SOSW-852S)
? PYS1 - stock (2004/09/24)
? PDS3/PDS6/PDS7 - stock (2005/07/01) (Dell OEM)
? PFS1/PFS2/PFS3 - stock (2005/05/27) (Vaio OEM) (newer than PDS7)
Sony DW-R56A (rebadged LiteOn SOSW-862S - no dash support)
? QDS1 - stock (2004/05/13)

I'd try updating it from the current PDS6 to the PDS7 fw version.

Bump the burn speed down to 4x.

If this is your second drive,I'd definitely find a higher quality drive in the future. I love benq's,but they are getting very scarce.I have yet to wear any of my 4 benq's out after 1000's of burns. Well over 3500+ on my original 1620 and still holding strong. 1 coaster every 400+ backups, even with crappy cmag and prodisc media. Plextor makes some sweet drives,as well as Lite-on,pioneer,LG,and NEC.

I'm not keen on external drives, internal would be the best option for your desk top. If wanting to go with external,I'd get a separate external enclosure and an NEC drive to place it in and hook it up via USB 2.0.
