Are you using the DVD Shrink uninstaller or uninstalling with the WinXP control panel?

Use the DVD Shrink uninstaller in the DVD Shrink folder. It should be accessible from the Start menu.

Start -> Programs -> DVD Shrink -> Uninstall DVD Shrink

It could also be due to not having the correct permissions to the computer itself. Try logging on as Administrator than uninstal the program. If not, reinstal program than uninstal. If you have been useing the program for a while than try to remember when the program worked, if u can do that than do a system restore. Hopefully it will fix the problem.

Hi Guys,

Trust everyone is having a great festive season. I have been using DVD Shrink for a while now, and have had to change the regions a few times. Today DVD Shrink advised me that this is the last time that i can change regions. Does anyone know a way out of this? I tried to uninstall and then re-install DVD Shrink.

Any thoughts>

It sounds like you're close to using up the max number of region changes allowable for your drive.

Region coding is built into the OS software as well as the DVD drive hardware. The drive region setting can be changed 5 times and then you're locked into that region for the duration unless the counter is reset. This is easier done for some drives than others. The DVD drive can be made region-free via a firmware hack. This hack is not available for all drives. See the link below for region free hacks. If you have a NEC burner, there are additional sites that cater to this drive. Let us know.

http://tdb.rpc1.org/

Firmware can be found at the site below as well. In addition on the extreme right hand side are links to other sites that specialize in region-free firmware for other brands:

http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php

The software side is easily defeated by AnyDVD and other available programs. AnyDVD makes any DVD title appear to be region-free.

http://www.slysoft.com/en/download.html

Also the DVD Region+CSS program:

Does that mean it wouldn't uninstall or that it did eventually uninstall?

Go back to an earlier restore point. Does the program work there? Can you uninstall it at the earlier restore point?

If I were in your shoes, I'd backup my data, reformat the hard disk, and reinstall the OS and all software. That may not cure the problem, but it'll be a good start.

If you have access to another system, you might want to install your burner there before reformatting to make sure it hasn't gone wonky.

Let's start from the beginning. First we get this out of the way. Shrink by itself is obsolete as far as decryption goes. That means it will do some movies, but if the copy protection is a newer type the decryption can fail. You need to use newer decryption software and open files "cleaned" by the software in Shrink. Did you already try that method?

Shrink doesn't burn. By burn do you mean it fails during the actual recording process when Nero has already compressed the files? Where does the problem occur and exactly what is the specific error message? Is it during the decryption, transcoding or burn part of the task?

Didn't we go over this in another thread or at least burning.

In the end that might be necessary, but I'd suggest trying another recording software first. InterVideo has trial apps, Nero has a trial with the recode and Slysoft has trials for both decryption and transcoding. Lets be sure it isn't just a problem with a particular program or user error before going to the extreme of reformatting and reinstalling operating systems.

Here is another suggestion for you, all free. Use RipIt4Me. It uses the last versions of DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink. Have those installed first and then install Ripit4Me. The RipIt4Me also installs FixVTS for you. Be sure to use the installer and have Shrink and Decrypter installed first. Then use the 1 click method to try a movie. This usually works with all except some of the latest releases. Laddyboy made a good point, make sure the hardware is in good shape. Plus if that doesn't work, try the trials and other software I suggested. You need to know if it's a particular software problem, in the operating system (OS), or hardware.

jennymo,

You are never specific about what you are doing. This last post tells us nothing. What software were you using? What program did you use to burn? Before you said Shrink choked after a few minutes of encoding. Now you're saying it works, but the burned disks are not readable by your standalone player. So what exactly is the problem? DVD Shrink appears to be working.

If you can burn, the problem is more related to media, burner firmware, or burning speed and not likely encoding.

- make sure your burner firmware is up to date.
- use good quality media like Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, and made in Japan labeled Fuji and Sony.
- burn at half or less the rated speed of the media if your burner supports that speed.

If you're burning at max speed with poor quality media and out of date firmware, the disks may not be readable by your dvd player.

Is it an older player? What is the brand and model of the standalone and how long have you had it? Get DVD Identifier, free, just google. I'd like to know the brand and manufacturer of your media. What model PC do you have and the CPU type and operating system, XP or whatever? RAM amount and hard drive space free would add to the picture. Did you try processing your finished files with FixVTS an then recording again to see if it will play on the standalone. That processes for DVD compliance. If you choose a backup instead of in place with FixVTS, remember the backup there are the original files.

Some copy protection messes with the structure and the firmware of a drive may not react properly. As a test, try redoing a movie you did successfully before.

I think laddyboy is starting to draw the same conclusion as I am. It may not be the Shrink, especially since it's now in the burn play situation and Shrink doesn't burn. On a rare occasion it may let a copy protection error by, but the FixVTS I mentioned should work for that. No one has asked yet, what is the movie you're trying to backup? That and the other info I asked would go a long way in solving your problem.

Okay, you're up to date it seems. Is "All the King's Men" the only problem you're having now. I've heard this release has a slightly different copy protection that has been causing some software problems. Did you try doing a backup with movie only? The copy protection is in all the extra files the manufacturer adds in.
