is it the only drive in your system?
if it is, is it on master?
in device manager check your ide channel and make sure it is using ultra dma and not pio mode.

if you tried all these, you may have to try another dvd-rom drive

and no putting all files on D would cause it to dummy all the files and would not work.

try and get another cheap dvd drive doesn't have to be a burner and try that, sorry that's all I could come up with.

I use a lite-on dvd drive from walmart for 30 bucks if that helps.

You wouldn't have access to a laptop with a dvd drive would you?

ok,i want you to try something else,if you get to the point where you have to do the swap,instead of openening the drive,leave it as it is,you just take a paperclip en you push the emergency eject
then your drive will also open,swap the disk,and push it back in
