hi everyone,
i've been reading other posts about DVD Shrink analyzing and then encoding very slowly, but none of the suggestions have helped me. mine was working just fine, and then all of a sudden it just got really slow.

first, i changed the device setting back to DMA, but that did not help. i have since ran a virus scan and spyware scan with my Zone Alarm, then ran AdAware anyway and it found nothing. i have gone into my Local Settings and deleted any temp files that were annoying. i have also defragged my system. dvdshrink is still slow.

i have since borrowed a friend's computer, and here is my experiment. i used CSI Season 6 Disc 4 just as an example. both computers have relatively the same hardware, and the same version of dvdshrink. i even took out my dvd drive, and put it in his computer. in his computer, CSI would start encoding with about 1 hour remaining, which i know is typical. but after about 30 seconds it would drop down to 58 minutes, etc. the normal speed it used to do on my computer. so i took the drive out, put it back in my computer, analyzed the same dvd, and when it started encoding on my computer it started out with 5 hours remaining and was going very slow.

i don't think i have a memory issue, because everything else is fine. i can play World of Warcraft for hours and hours and never have slow down (512 mb of ram).

so, any other suggestions before i just totally reformat my computer?

thanks!

chatmoca,
Welcome to the forum. Does your drive go into PIO Mode after you change it to DMA? If so you have got some conflicts. The computer registry if it is screwed up will cause the OS to Downgrade from DMA to Pio. Download a free registry cleaner and clean the registry.

Are all of the cables seated properly? I am almost willing to bet it is a conflict in the registry so I would do a cleaning of the regisrty first and you can Google for a free one. Most here use CCleaner

hey, thanks for the welcom.

ok, at first, it had dropped down into PIO mode. so i uninstalled the secondary ide channel, rebooted, and let it reinstall. after that it was back to dma, ultra dma mode 2. but it's still been really clow.

i did check the ide cable and connections when i put the drive back in my case. i downloaded CCleaner, and ran it on windows and applications, and ran the registry check. it fixed quite a number of issues. it seems like a really good program.

however, dvdshrink is still horribly slow. i've noticed while encoding, that in my task manager processes, dvdshrink and explorer.exe is using all 100% of my cpu. should that be happening? also, when watching the encoding, i can see the video just chugging along. it used to be fluid. no pauses. now it's like a little video will play, then a pause, video play, pause, etc.

Did you check your HDD's to see that they were set to DMA as well...good idea to check all channels.

chatmoca,
Shrink does use the system resources of the CPU and Locoeng brings up a valid point about the HD's. Sounds like there is still a problem somewhere if the HD's are in DMA. Post back about the HD

You might also cut off the internet, Antivirus, firewall and screensaver during the processing of DVD's and see if that helps.

I don't think I read any where about a defrag...a sloppy HD will sometimes slow you down as well. A defragged drive is a happy drive.

I to have had the exact same trouble recently,
check task manager, and you will more than likely find that
explorer.exe, is using a bucket load of your memory, on mine I am running EZ Antivirus, and it appears that some of the updates may conflict somehow, I just put the antivirus into snooze mode, and shrink was back to normal, I hope this helps

Good information Glenn...there are many things that can grab ahold of different programs and jam up the whole works. Two programs can be useful in tracking and killing these rouge apps...Unlocker and Process Explorer.

yeah, i did defrag the hard drive, and checked my primary ide channel and it's on dma also.

well, this is crazy. even though i've changed no settings at all before this issue started, i just not shut down my Zone Alarm and tried it...and it is faster than it was before. lol

that same csi dvd analyzed in like 1 minute, and the encoding is starting out at only 48 minutes.

i've been using Zone Alarm since 2003, and love the program. sometimes it screws up web pages and programs though. i'll have to try to find some Zone Alarm forums to see what settings users had to tweak in order for Shrink to work properly.

thanks again for your help. as usual, it was one of the simplest, obvious things causing the problem.
