@red4925: I didn't realize the Wiinja had only 3 solder points. But when you consider it IS a $250 system, paying $30 for an experienced solder is not that bad. I'd rather spend $$ myself rather than risk it. Norcalmods & other dedicated modders will be more than happy to do it, and they guarantee their work.

@tukiwiki: once you've done your own system you could always solder a few of your friends' to make the cost of that s.iron back :)

I hear that Fedora is running Linux on the PS3. I wonder if some homebrewer will be able to get an alternate OS running on the Wii. Could you imagine hooking up a keyboard & mouse, and having your Wii as another computer? That's worth $250 just to see it done.

if you're a college student, do NOT settle with the RIAA http://tinyurl.com/37oz2z

About the ColdHeat soldering iron... wikipedia has some good info on it if you search "ColdHeat". I don't think it would be good for soldering potentially sensitive electronics like those in a video game console. I have not heard very good things about it; it seems gimmicky to me (have heard of the tips breaking - they're the most expensive part of the tool, i believe). I don't think it is actually a soldering iron in the usual sense (read about how it works). i would buy a cheap 25W (or less) soldering iron from radio shack or a home improvement store and practice on scrap electronics - make sure it includes a fine tip or buy one. From looking at the installation pics, the solder points don't like too small - something you could be confident soldering too with a bit of practice.

Is there a website where I can buy a pre-modded wii so I won't have to open it up?

i believe i saw that when i was searching on google about the modchips - just look around. I don't think you'll find anything just yet, since the chips aren't out.

Anyone know when these chips are shipping? I didn't get a reply about preorders from the Cyclowiz guys.

i also just saw there's a third wii modchip scheduled to ship 2/7, i believe. It has a few more features including firmware upgrade via DVD.

Where did you see information for a third mod chip?

I have a coldheat, but it's not what you want for modchip and small-scale soldering. The coldheat's nice for general wiring and AC plug repairs, but it's tip is too big and broad for anything that requires fine control. Go to Radio Shack and spend $10.99 on the dual wattage soldering iron. That way you have the ability to swith wattage for different types of jobs and you can switch tips for different sizes for just a couple bucks per tip, versus $10 per tip for the coldheat (and its chisel tip is still much wider than the nice pencil tips you can get for regular irons.

About that third modchip with upgradeable firmware, I think I found something that fits that description.. http://www.wiikey.cn/ . The whole idea with upgradeable firmware seems much more appealing to me than the others, which use static firmware?
Given that the FW can be changed, in theory, a dumper for the games could be written that runs on the Wii and dumps to.. say.. SD or SMB share/FTP on a PC?
Exciting! :)

Don't get a wiinja. Get the cyclowiz. Look at the design on both. You can see the cyclowiz has way more time spent on its design and whatnot. The wiinja is just a small 8pin $1.50 chip with their code on it. Order through www.modchipcentral.com or www.cyclowiz.com . But cyclowiz is not taking anymore preorders and modchipcentral took over their preorders as it shows on their site.

fulhack that is the modchip that can be upgraded. the bad thing is that it uses wires to solder so it is not a quck solder.

And while you get a chip that is directly soldered to the board and cost you $40+ dollars I will have a $1.50 chip that I can make myself and does the same thing, has an on/off switch and is removable with a socket.....

I agree with oner.
People think that the cyclowiz is better than the Wiinja mostly because Wiinjas simple look.

thank you all

Who says you'll be able to make them yourself? Do you already have the hex code? Don't think so...

Wow can you read? Or do you just have a poor comprehension? When the code gets released AS DISCUSSED ALREADY you can be sure I will have it programmed on a IC chip.....Anyway here is some info from a trusted place

For those wondering, I've now been told from a VERY reliable source that the hexcode has been leaked.

Hex code leaked? *Awsome*. Can't wait to get my hands on that! It would be really interesting to see the inner workings of a modchip, even if in assembler (I assume you can run this thing through a PIC debugger and analyze it?).
I wonder what more one could do to the drive via a PIC.. Any clues on how a modchip sporting homebrew applications like the Xecuter chips for xboxes work? Same basic idea of a chip placed somewhere else (wouldn't do much good on the optical drive;)?
Where would the chip have to be placed if it was to carry software, like a dumper for the wii games, and which sort of chip would we be talking about?
Got me all worked up now.. :P

I understand that the Cyclowiz is upgradeable via DVD....does that mean you have to purchase an upgrade DVD each time Nintendo forces a firmware upgrade or will it be available for download somewhere?

I'm also curious about future modchips that will come out....is there a way to remove this modchip and upgrade to something else or do you feel the cyclowiz will be good enough to use for the life of the console?

thanks for any replies

Upgrades will be downloadable.
Cyclowiz will be easy to uninstal if you can solder.
I think that there will be beter chips eventually (maybe wii imports/hombrew support), but I think this chip is great and ones I have it I probeply won't replace it by an better chip.

thank you all
