I think we should start a separt thread when the chips are realeased. So we don't get confused.

All these chips will play gamecube backup games but not the Wii backups, correct? So these chips are for playing your gamecube backups only.

Cyclowiz will play Wii backup...but only backup of the SAME region ie US Wii can only play US backup
WiiKey is supposed to enable cross region backup to be play. ie, US Wii can play NTSC-J backup verse versa

I have been patiently waiting for all the mods chips to come out to hear about the good and bad aspects of each one. So far, I am leaning towards the WiiKey but have not heard another about it since it has been released. Has anyone played with this chip yet? I am growing impatient as the days go on and since I got my LG burner. Does anyone think it is worth it for me to keep waiting for news on the WiiKey or do you think there are better chips out there to buy?

I agree. A thread just for the chips & then links to threads on each one. it looks like region protection is something that can be h4cked but for now we only get to play backups. If Nintend0 is smart they will release all the good RPGs here in the States as well as Jpn & Europe. those soccer games the europeans can have ;)
and the horse racing games....bleeh don't bother! LOL

yeah.. it would be easier to figure out benefits of each chip.
I'm still waiting before buying one..I'm a novice with soldering and all of this.. but I have a friend that can apparently do it.. but I'm going to make them test on something else first.

sparkelzz, edit your sig to conform to forum specs ASAP.

Jsp0t: what do you think of the WiiKEY chips compared to the others out there?
it seems the WiiKEY is more popular on some of the other modding forums/news sites.
Have you tried the other chips? if so which ones?

I have never tried any other modchips other than the wiiKey so I can only speak for that one. So far it works great and has not had any problems. I waited before I ordered a modchip and the wiiKey had the best reviews and fewer complaints thus far. Also most of the problems that people are having out there are due to media quality.

What did you pay for the WiiKEY's?
Ive found them here http://www.americanxboxmodchips.com/wiikey.htm for $39.85
They also have the CycloWIZ V2 for $42.19
Are the WiiKEY's easy to update via DVD? When and if the chip OS/Firmware changes?

I bought mine at divineo.cn, they're the only site that had them in stock and actually got them to me in a timely manner. As for DVD updates, they have a setup disc that enables/disables region-free and setting your drive speed. Its not an actual firmware update but it shows you can change code on the disc.

Just got my WiiKey in the mail yesterday. I installed myself, tested it and everything works great and I like the chip. Just wanted to let everyone know that I like the WiiKey.

I got my chip from modchipstore it is one of the three listed on the official Wiikey website. I kind of went with a weird installation with my chip but at the time I felt it would be the easiest.
Their are 6 solder points on the chip. 2 of them are in a circle cut out of the wiikey board and the other 4 are on the edge of the wiikey board. First I found the four points on the Wii that went to the 4 edge points of the wiikey, I soldered wire to each of the 4 points on the wii. I then lined up the wiikey as if I was going to quick solder it. Then I took the four wires already soldered to the wii and just leaned them over on the wiikey and soldered them down. Then I took the 2 circle cut outs and just quick soldered them (I could of done the same method with the circle cut outs but I thought it would be to much to line up). In the end the wiikey is right were it would be if I quick soldered everything but it is like I just used wires if I need to remove it.
Does that make any sense? If not let me what part does not make sense.
