whichmod, If you want to use the internet for NEWS, Weather, and most new games you will need to update. If your Wii is new you probably have a D2C chip and updating will not hurt you for modding, everything will work great still. It will cost you more to mod though but the new mod is much better then mods for the D2B and prior, just a hassle to install though.
If you have an older chip D2B or prior you can still update and probably won't have problems, shouldn't really, but some have reported having problems when doing so.

Mr-Movies, thanks for the quick reply!
Sounds like it is similar to the XBOX (orig) then - and updating won't hurt my system. The PSP fixes are a software fix, so require the older OS as a base in order to load the fix.
I will definitely find out which chip the system has and go for the appropriate mod when the time comes. Having only 2 games, not a huge rush at the moment - it would pay to wait a bit I think on the 2nd gen mods.

We should probably start a new thread for modder locations where people can go to that thread to find the closes mod-tech to them seperateed by state and even counties. As people find out of mod-technicians they can enter it in the thread.

I had my Wii modded by a local guy who isn't doing it anymore for obvious reasons. When I took in my Wii I watched him do it. From what he told me it was a Wiinja deluxe. Well after failing to update the chip I took it apart and found out it is a Wiinja V2. The chip is attached to the board with wires. I'm looking somea opinions on whether I should replace it with a Wiinja Deluxe or a Wiikey. I believe the Wiikey would only have one extra solder point on the board and the Wiinja Deluxe is a straight swap with the reset being optional. It is one of the older Wiis also.

Just go to some of the other gaming forums normally under different console names and you'll find ohters that can point you in the right direction since it is taboo here. There are still a lot of places that sell mod chips and will mod it for you just be careful if you're crossing any country boaders, like Canada to the US.

Looking for a modder to install D2CKey around the San Francisco Bay Area!
I've got the chip already, but no wires.
Looked on CL and got two labor price quotes of $180 and $200, which I thought was a bit high.
PM me, please, and thank you! :)

for people that are always looking for installs, why not look to the official distributors and ask them ?
for wiikey www.wiikey.cn/resellers.html
for d2ckey www.d2ckey.com/resellers.html
That way you're sure that the place youre getting it done is trusted, and youre getting an authentic product.

Yes, besides why would you want to install a 31 wire chip right now if you can get away with 5-6.

I've always preferred the wiikey, easy install and does the job quite nicely. Since the new d2ckey coders took over the support for it is now good as well, the old coder sucked big time.

Great reply Spyman but in theory the D2CKey should work on older consoles as well, there are no guides to do this so you would need to know what you are doing to be successful. But your right the wiring is a nightmare compared to the WiiKey. The D2CKey however is less detectable, 128 bit encryption, then the WiiKey and once installed and working there is no Setup disc to run through. A big downside to the D2C is that upgrading it would be difficult due to the encryption scheme so the average joe isn't going to be able to flash the chip.
Functionally the difference between the WiiKey (all old mod chips) and the D2C is that the old mod?s use the serial I/O ports to circumvent code where as the D2C does it through the parallel data I/O ports basically piggy backing the original D2C. The Actel chip is very fast and can handle circumventing code better.
Mod?n the D2C is very time consuming it?s not like the WiiKey where you can mod it in less then an hour so mod?n it will be a lot more expensive. There are places that will do it for as little as $75 if you provide the chip and that?s a steal. Do as Spyman says and go to the chip MFG?s sites they will lead you in the right direction.
