Alphateam,
I don't know whether this helps, but the 1st thing you have to do is run your serial # at WiiTracker in order to determine which chip(s) would work for your Wii. If it is a D2C chip, you have a more complicated job. Next you need the proper files & utilities to handle the files with the Wii games, all functioning properly. In backing up Wii discs, you will need the proper LG drive to read the Wii files, and a decent burner to do the back up along with the right media discs. No matter which way you go, it's not as easy as it may seem. I am still debugging my setup with a WiiKey that I installed last week. The only advice I can pass on to all is that I am experienced at working with electronics, although not generally this small. The soldering is not as easy as it may seem, as this is a small chip. I worked with care, under a small magnifying lens. Breath the wrong way and you can ruin your board. Anyone over 40 who's eyesight is changing or has shaky hands had better get someone else to install :). I recommend the short wire method for two reasons: Easier to remove if necessary, less chance of cooking your board or bridging the circuits.
You can install a switch for the chip, but it is unnecessary if you are using a stealth type chip which only modifies how the drive reads the discs.

@WThesing

Thanks for your help. I'm pretty comfortable with the technical aspect of things. Installing a DVD drive, ripping the discs, writing them, updating firmware, etc... I've been doing those sorts of things for years. And I'm comfortable with getting the actual instillation done. The instructor has been teaching soldering and the like for 13 years. So I'm covered there as well.

I'm more concerned with the functionality/flexibility of the chip I use. While I haven't checked by Wii, being a launch console I'm certain it isn't A D2C. Again I haven't checked, but the instructors being it was purchased less than a month ago is a D2C.

I want something I can put the newest game in, get online (if they ever get a game to play online, but that is another topic), and get any critical updates/new channels that are available. If it requires me waiting an extra week for the chips firmware to be fixed that is fine. I also want something I can play backups with. I miss the days of cartridges. You can't scratch those. Maybe some cleaning, but that is about it. So is there a chip that will let me do all I dream?

EDIT: I checked and

AlphaTeam,
I think what you need is the WiiKey, unless there is something newer that I am unaware of. The way the chip functions is by changing how the drive reads the discs, and nothing more. All of the other functions of the Wii remain unchanged. Since it affects only the drive, it remains invisible unless the big N comes up with some scheme in the future (unlikely). I believe that your G2C chip will still be OK, but check further on this.

rafadawn,

I did a short wire install of a WiiKey. Multimetered my connections for continuity & cross circuitry. All checked out OK. Put in the 1.9G GCOS file that you linked on Verbatum +R DVD @ 2X. The GCOS appeared in my disc channel. When I booted it, I got the opening screen and after about 20 seconds, got an error message on the Butt Shot screen. After waiting a minute or two, I ejected the disc. The drive went into a freeze as if a disc was loaded. Back to workbench and removed cover. Saw nothing. Reassembled and hooked up again. No 1.9G or any other discs are recognized. Only original Wii game discs function. I realize that maybe I will have to re-burn on -R DVD's, as all of the config, flash, backups were originally done on +R's (All Verbatum). Does this sound like a defective WiiKey???? Should I look at something else as the problem? I have read this thread multiple times, and the only hitch I ran into was in the file chopping, Win XP notepad does not allow me to change txt files to bat files. I will say that this file handling is not my strongest point, so I used your ready made GCOS 1.9G just to see whether I would get recognition. I did for a short time until the lockup. I am trying to go thru a process of elimination, so any further guidance would be appreciated.

Wii @ 3.1U All backups, etc are US NTSC - no cross region whatsoever.
Received WiiKey (ORIGINAL) last week.

Bill

hey all, two questions:

from what my research has yielded, the D2CKey and the Argon are the only two D2C chips; are there any more in development?

also, i am somewhat of an electrical engineer in training and while my soldering skills are above average, i do not think i am prepared for the 0.5mm pin spacing job. i have been practicing on the closest thing i could find (a 1mm pin-spaced chip) and i am doing well enough but need a lot more practice. my question is: which mod chip requires the least soldering to the chip legs?

thanks

We have a family wii, but i'm moving to japan for a bit soon and i really don't want to have to buy all our games again so i'm looking to buy a premodded wii - which should i get and where should i get it from? If possible I'd like to buy it from a site where they also give you the option to purchase and have installed a customised case...

It's also important that it can play gamecube and wii back-ups from all regions (<--- not too knowledgable in that area) - i really don't want any restrictions on it if possible

Also are there any risks regaurding firmware - ie could updating my wii in the future end up disabling the chip?

Finally, are any chips better than others, eg i heard the company behind wiikey wasn't going to release updates anymore?

Sorry, its quite a few questions, but i would really appeciate your advice ^^

I never heard that the D2CKey was not going to provide updates for future Nintendo software updates. Is this true?

yeah:

The only chip on the market that guarantees the ability to surmount software-side attempts at disabling its "modding" ability and unintentional compatibility issues with future updates is the Argon chip. It will soon be surpassed by its younger brother, but far superior, the Infectus2 chip; they both come from the same team. As far as I know, the Argon only works on the D2C (also, luckily for you, the newest) chipset; you may have to do extra or alternate soldering for other chipsets. Also, despite the rather bold opening statement of this post, my words were chosen carefully. While the Argon has the ability to have its JTAG firware code completely replaced/updated, it requires an additional component, the "Injectus", to utilize this aspect. In addition, the coders are not guaranteed to issue an official firmware update to fix future issues, only the capability is "guaranteed." Fortunately they have issued a few updates, the most recent being about a week ago, which is a good sign for future support/updates; there is always the option of a "community" fix as well, since the Injectus allows you to modify the [mod] chip's firmware code however you want. You could literally copy and paste someone's posted fix off of a forum as your "update." The initial "patches", if you will, had their issues, but if you understand most of what I have said, this is obviously the long-term solution you seem to be interested in. Hope that helps, I'll try to answer any more-specific questions you might have.

i've done some research into the argon chip and there's this 3 wires thing (sry for my lack of technical knowledge btw / if im not saying anything new) that allows for 100% all region compatability, is that right? if so is there anywhere to buy one with that bit already sorted?

I know there is a chance that I could get my question answered somewhere else in the thread, but its info that I think could be Sticky material by itself.

Since we can all agree that the newer d2c chipsets make using the full featured mods like the wiikey a more complicated install, I wanted to know if there was already an established way to check the chipset on a Wii without opening the casing, or possibly, without even opening the box if possible. If the answer was yes, then newer readers like me could potentially shop around for a Wii that would make the mod easiest (non d2c).

Also, since the Wii community in general is likely to be turning to modding to access the Japanese SSBM a month in advance, there are some things that could be cleared up. First, should we expect significant difficulty in getting fairly priced access to purchasing the game on release day, or anytime near then? And second, should we instead consider that modding means we could potentially DL the iso when the first ripper gets a copy and posts it to the web, and if so, how likely is it that finding a working copy would likewise be a great challenge?

I hope that a well explained answer can shed light on the current environment for new entries into the Wii modding market.

After seeing this and having so much trouble ordering a wiikey, i thought i'd help out any fellow wii-owners

http://www.foundmy.com/oscom/product_info.php?products_id=230

genuine wiikey - $26.00 + free tri-wing and wire kit (yes, free tri-wing screwdriver and wire kit!), $8.00 shipping and handling - 4 day shipping at most. supports paypal - i ordered mine but paypal is doing maintenance right now so i have to wait a bit

i ordered my wiikey for $50.80 from modchipstore.com just to wait 2 weeks and have 0 form of notification from them, however my credit card did get charged. ill have to cancel my order somehow.

anyhow, after being wounded and down, i took 1 more look for a reliable place to buy a wiikey from, and sure enough i foundmy (;)) answer. i was skeptical at first, along with the other sites i researched, but this one has 56 reviews on this wiikey bundle and the latest being from the 17th, so the odds of them changing their ways from the 17th til now is slim, and the reviews really have got my hopes up. the price being half of what i originally paid, atm 54 reviews and all 5 star, 4-day-ish shipping, genuine, what more could you ask for? my guess is they are selling like hotcakes ^^

Does thew wiikey allow you to download and play the older games in the virtual store available for the wii?

If so, is there a good source to download them?

Since my wii doesn't have web connectivity, that would make it worth the investment.

Hi folks

I have just installed a WiiKey into my GC2-D2B console.

Unfortunatly it doesn't appear to recognize Any backups i insert.I have tried loading 6 different backups on DVD-R media that all work on a friends Modded Wii.

I'm sure the I have soldered all 6 solder points successfully but was wondering if there were any other issues i may need to take into consideration before carefully removing the chip and trying again.

Thanks.

Garee - it's $26.00... investment? :-\ Unappreciative pirate >:(

and no, not that i know of, virtual console games have encryption key on them not cracked yet, that and we just recently dumped the Wii's entire RAM, let alone after a VC game was loaded and decrypted ;) all in good time

I'm mostly concerned about screwing up my wii, but my main desire for the mod was to get the older games I used to have (or still have in some cases) using the virtual console.

Ya start buying $10 old games, and suddenly you find you've spent $500 on them! LOL!

Plus without having the net connect on the wii, it becomes more problematic.

Granted, I could burn current games, or even gamecube stuff, but I was thinking of things like the old zelda games, donkey kong counrty n such.

@ Gareee

How do you actually make backups of the old games like N64 Zelda or Super Smash Bros N64? I have been looking for this for a long time but can't find a good way to actually put it on discs and do it through homebrew.

Depends really...

If you haven't done anything to make your wii "mod-chip specific" (like modifying the bios or something to rely on your current mod-chip on boot up)

AND

If the wiikey or w/e modchip you want to get supports your wii's chipset (as in, if you have a D2C chipset, you can't replace your current one with the wiikey and expect it to work)

Hmm the reason i ask that is because at this moment i cant play games like super mario galaxy and mario party 8. I gave it the Wii key 1.9 update and nothing, so i assume it is not wii key.

Can u guys tell me if all the wii mod chips have an way to play this kind of protected games???

I see the new D2Pro site is in it's infancy. Has anyone heard anything on it's release date? Also, I assume this is compatible with the D2C chipset (I hope!)

Get it installed professionally. Seriously. Don't take the path I took. It cost me loads in the long run.
