I have a hard time finding (cheap) working media for this recorder.

Can it record on just about anything (like the Pioneer A06 seems to do =) or is it more selective??

I know it quite a new drive but, please post your experiences!

I've tried the following in a GSA-4040B:

Memorex DVD-RW (TDK502sakuM3) - ATAPI error 2a040901

Imation DVD+RW (RICOHJPN) - Worked

Have got a couple of TDK DVD+RW that I haven't tried yet, also a Shintaro (PRINCO) 1xDVD-R and PRINCO 4xDVD-R.

I suspecting this is a very fussy writer at the moment.

I used Princo 4x media with Nero, but 4040B recognize it as 2x.. So the top speed for it is 2x sadly.. I got this drive for $200 Canadian ($130US) after $100Cdn rebate.. incredibly cheap. At that price, I don't care if it's picky about media or not. As long as there's a compatible media, I'll stick to that brand :) So here's my report:

Princo 4x DVD-R: only burns at 2x

Yep, tried the PRINCO 4x and it worked OK albeit at only 2x but since PRINCO are one of the cheaper brand, (AU$1.70), who am I to complain :)

Got the burner for US$212 in the USA when I was there last month, far better than what I could have got it for in Australia.

yup, I had princo 4x @ 2x, but maxell 4x dvd+r (ricoh) and ritek G03 (2x) and G04 (4x) works perfectly.. haven't tested other brands.

I also got an ATAPI error ( 2a040901) when making a DVD to DVD copy using the B's Gold software that came with the DVD recorder. Any Ideas why?

Is it because of the Media I used or perhaps the Master/Slave order of the drives?

Thank you

It's the media - I was getting the exact same thing using Memorex DVD-RW.

Swapped to RICOH DVD+RW and PRINCO DVD-R and no more problems.

Also got rid of B's software because no matter how you set the damn thing, it always ejects the damn discs on any excuse it can.

BTW, the Shitaro 1xDVD-R I tried, (PRINCO), actually id'd and wrote at 2x - added bonus :)

Prassi software does not see my LG 4040B DVD burner as a recordable drive. Does anyone know if Prassi supports the LG 4040B?

Hi, About LG-4040B... x4 burning

At first, check out your firmware-version of LG 4040b. its firmware version must be A300 (A300 is released at 07/31/2003 by LGE).
so If your firmware version is A104, then upgrade yours to A300. (LGE are also working for the next-version firmware, improved firmware supports more 4x media)

The best way is to use the verified DVD media by other users. :)

Here is the list from korean-user. for x4 burning w/ LGE GSA-4040b
(because some media doesn't be sold outside of korea, I removed some medias and x1, x2 medias)

For x4 burning,
If it's possible, use these medias.
(DVD-R)
LGE x4 (by LGE or LG): modelname LGE004
Ritek x4 --> use G04 model.(OEM G04 model too)
Pioneer x4 ---> good but expensive choice.

(DVD+R)
Ricoh x4 : includes any other Richo-OEM DVD+R

(DVD+RW - Max is x2.4)
Ricoh x2.4
Sony x2.4 : This is made by Ricoh(OEM)
CMC x2.4
etc.

There are some OEM medias made by Ritek. It's possible to burn at x4 speed.

4040B is their(LGE) main-stream model in ODD, many people have reported 4x media-support-problem to LGE, If they release next firmware, then we could select more DVDR(W) media for 4x burning.

So, buy the verfied 4x medias, or you should wait for the next firmware for 4040B.
Be patient. :P

In addition,

This is not supported x4 media(2003/09/08 GSA-4040B Firmware-version A300). These will be detected as x2 media well.

(DVD-R)
Princo x4
GSC001 x4
Optodisk x4 (Optodisk001)
SKC x4
Maxell x4

above medias will work as x2.

Hello,
I have this drive and tried Intenso DVD+RW, which work at 2.3x
I also tried PHILIPS DVD+RW without any chance of even getting the media recognized.
Some OCTRON / RITEK 2x DVD-R did fine.
No more for now. -ö just one remark: Is the DVD+RW always that slow in READING?
Regards
Frank

Indeed, the firmware is difficult to find.

Go to:

http://us.lgservice.com/index_b2c.jsp

Then click on DEVICE DRIVERS and CDRW.
Voila there's the firmware(s). ;-)

edit: new media that works:

TDK & FUJI DVD-R. Also plays in toshiba 1600.

Hello from Spain.

Here the LG4040B is also cheap. About 180 eur.

I have tested at 4X with "MiFlop Media" DVD-R 4X, and works really fine. 10 DVDs burned and 0 errors.

Saludos;)

Finally found the firmware but had a bit of difficulty upgrading it. in case no1 knows you have to start xp in safe mode before it will let you apply the update. works great on 4 speed but you have to use the right media. Nero will not let me record in full speed yet but tmpenc does. Anyone knows why this happens please let me know.

y un hola grande para mis amigos espanoles.
