That seems like an awful lot of work, why aren't using DVD Shrink to rip what you want and then burn with Nero?

I just bought some princo white top 4X dvd-r's.
burner is updated to a302. From what I've read, I should be able to burn at 4x. Well, I tried backing up a movie at 4x and it skipped near the end. Then I tried it at 2x and it worked. Has anyone had any success with 4x princo white top dvd-r?
Thanks,
21h

Really! Princo skipped, I would try burning a few more movies even at 2X and see if anymore skip. I doubt the burning speed would make it skip. It could have been a bad DVD disc but I would go out on a limb and say we bought the worst dvd burner on the market. Hell, they are practiclly giving it away at futureshop here in Canada. You can get it for 99 bux American.

lol...well, I keep on telling myself I got a good deal on this burner ($120 CAN futureshop). On my burn at 4x I got around 20% unreadable at the end of the dvd (using nero's cd speed). My next 2 burns with 2x worked perfectly (no errors). So I have 2 more Princos and I really want to test to see if I can burn at 4x since I would like to buy a 50 spindle for $65 at www.blankdvdmedia.com. If more people had success with these princos at 4x, I guess I will try again to see (maybe it was a bad disc).

Forgot to add this:
I bought a pack of Fotis DVD-R (10 for $10 CAN at summit direct, not sure what speed they are compatible with since it didn't state). Burned at 2x and it worked fine on pioneer DVL-V888 and pansonic SA-HT70. Not sure about longevity of them. (Skipped at 4x burn)

x21hx,
Sounds like you've got other problems or a bad drive.
I've been working thru a spindle of RitekG03's (2X), not one bad burn (60+), clean read in Nero Speed. Tried a couple of RitekG04's 4X, no problems, clean read in Nero Speed (since A302, not with A301 though) Tried a couple of BeALLs 4X, no problems, clean read in Nero Speed. Tried a couple of DVD Pro (they id as Princo) 4X again no problems and clean read in Nero Speed. There seems to be some inconsistancy with Princo's from batch to batch, plant to plant, so I'll probably avoid the DVD Pros's.
The ACCU's (id as LEADDATA) 4X, I tried fell off a tad at the end In Nero Speed. The Optodisk 4X only burned at 2X but had a clean read.
This is more than enough media for me to choose from.
In 50 packs the 4X G04's cost $1.06 (the 2X G03's are $.91). The 4X BeAll's $1.09. These are current Meritline prices with free shipping.
Here's the 4X burned BeALL's
Here's the 4X burned ACCU's (LEADDATA).
The 4X burned RitekG04's.
And the 4X burned DVD Pro's.

Hi MysticE,
Thanks for the info. I hope its not a problem with the drive (just got it). The burns at 2x have been fine so far. Just trying to find one that works at 4x. I think I'll try the RitekG04. Anyone know where to get it cheap in Canada? I got the Princo's off of ebay (a 5 pack)
Thanks,

Ok I found www.Blankmedia.ca to be the cheapest place to get ritek discs in Canada. However, I am unsure as to which to get and what the differences between these are:
DVD+R 4X Ritek Arita ETA (50 for $77)
DVD-R 4X RITEK SILVER RIDATA ETA (50 for $83)
Anyone know the differences and which one I should get?
Thanks in advance,
x21hx

My experience with LG GSA-4040B and media:
- Verbatim DVD-R 1-4x: is the best. Burns at 4x (expensive)
- Maxell DVD-R 1-4x (red package, made in Japan): burns at 2x
- Vakoss DVD-R 1-4x only burns at 2x
- TDK DVD+R 1-4x only burns at 3x, bad error 50% of the time
Cheers!

Careful, there are different manufacturers for Verbatim. I have some made by CMC magnetics and they sucks ass. Although I hear the ones made by T. Youdin work. Can you confirm this with DVDInfo.

This is my first post here--this thread has been helpful. I just flashed my 4040b with the A302 firmware. I am still only burning at 2x using DVDXCOPY and Ritek G04 and Memorex media.
I've got a Shuttle SS51G (P4 1.8GHz) and am using the latest Adaptec ASPI layer.
Has anyone had 4x success with a similar configuration? Thanks for any help.

Hey dshih,
I went from dvd xcopy, to CloneDVD, to dvdshrink and Nero. I find dvdshrink and Nero combination to be a perfect fit and most versatile. Maybe that will allow for 4x write. Try different software, maybe it'll allow for 4x write.
Good luck!

I have used Ritek 4x and have had no problems. Pine were crap. Software wise, I have found that Clone DVD, with Any DVD running in the background work perfectly. This allow you to backup a DVD with a few clicks, by automatically ripping it, shrinking it, and burning it.

I currently have the A301 firmware installed (came already installed in my new GSA-4040B recorder bought 2 weeks ago from eBuyer.com)
Is it worth my while upgrading to A302?
Also - how do I go about it ?
I have downloaded the .zip file, and then unzipped the file to give me :
"GSA4040A302.exe" (size 1,230Kb)
Do I just need to run the .exe file to "flash" upgrade the recorder? And will it cause problems if I do?

just run the .exe, it will do everything auto-magically.
I even having problems with errors even on CD-R media. What gives?
What setup are people using via the IDE Channels, Primary Slave or Secondary Master or Secondary Slave.
I have 3 Hard drives and the burner, being on the secondary slave.

Thanks, x21hx. I did as you suggested, using DVD Shrink and Nero 6 (wish I would have known about this before buying DVDXCOPY). However, I'm still burning at 2x speed on Ritek G04 (~ 30 min for 4 GB) even though Nero says that it's burning at 4x. Back to the drawing board.
Does anybody if checking or unchecking "DVD high compatibility mode" makes a difference in burning speed?

I like cloneDVD for its simplicity, but the problem with this app is that if you rip out audio (like say french) it does not improve the video. Whereas with dvdshrink, ripping out audio allows for improvement in video. (seems more versatile)
As for burning in 4x, don't quote me on this but I am just relaying the message I read somewhere:
make sure your dvd burner drive has DMA on. You can check this with nero (extra->get system info->configuration)
** Tango: I have the dvd writer working as secondary master
Good luck
Tuan

I ordered some Princo 4X from http://www.blankmedia.ca
Hopefully this will solve my dvd errors. However, I am getting errors even on Sony CD-R. Guess I am going to put my old CD-RW burner back in.

I've upgraded to A302 also, but with Nero I'm still only able to burn @ 2X with LONGTEN 001 4x media (that my friend with a Sony burner with Nero can burn all day @ 4x ;-(
I've used DVDInfoPro which shows the media as being good @ 4x...
Anyone else experience the same / have any ideas or suggestions (other than not using my 50 spindle of these & buying Princo)?
Thanks in advance!

Read this review on cd writing performance with our burner:
http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/126
Let's just say it performs very poorly. Not sure if these are the issues you are having with your burner and cd-r.

Dump the discs, they are not a good match for your burner. With the A302 update things have improved considerably for the LG (the review that was listed is now out of date).
Get some RitekG04's or 4X BeAll's, these are well respected and reasonably priced discs that work great with the LG. Taiyo Yuden's also work well but are a bit expensive.
Meritline is offering free shipping on both.
http://meritline.com/dvd-r-blank-media-1.html
The 4X DVD Pro's (Princo) also work great with the LG, but some do not trust Princo (and no free shipping at Meritline).

are there several types of RitekG04 and RitekG03 out there on the market?
I'm currently using Bulkpaq Orange 4xspeed (Generation 4) x25 cakebox bought from eBuyer.com.. Haven't had much luck backing up my DVD PS2 games -- none have worked yet (using SwapMagic and fliptop)
I'm interested in purchasing 25/50 or 100 of the RitekG03 (as it's got good reviews for the 4040B writer) but I'm just a bit confused that there seems to be several to choose from?
also -- that cdfreaks review of our writer (4040B) seems to recommend the Verbatim Datalife Plusx4 DVD-R (manufacturer: Taiyo Yuden)
I'm looking for a supplier based in the UK
