I have attempted several times now to back up 'The Pianist' using DVD Shrink and each time the program has given the following error message:
CDvdCSS: Read Failed!
The reason is: Data Error (cyclic redundancy check)
I have since tried ripping other DVDs with the same program, including the opposite (Bonus features) side of 'The Pianist', and have had no problems. If anyone can shed some light on this issue I would certainly be appreciative.

I've never had a crc (cyclic redundancy check) error while ripping a dvd but I have had a crc error while trying to playback a burnt copy in my computer. I later found out that the crc error was a rare burning error. So I'm guessing your problem is possibly a defective original or maybe a scratch? Does it play ok in your standalone?

i had this problem with a disney title. ended up using DVD Decrypter set to ignore errors mode and ripped movie in file>full movie. shrink will still throw a wobbler with this file so compress with DVD2One and this works fine....good luck.

What region is the Pianist and version, if any?

I'm pretty sure that its a region one dvd, and I think there is only one version of it, but I have to double check. I did try cleaning the original with a dvd repair kit and it seemed to work ok at first but ended up getting the same message further into the rip... at about 25% instead of like 13%.

IFO 1 is the default setting for DVD Decrypter to startup on correct? Just wanted to make sure because before I was doing it as an ISO. Coincidentally the program got hung up about 1/4 of the way through the rip. I think the original is bad, but do you have any other suggestions in the meantime?

Decrypter is still getting hung up every time it gets to about 25%, I'm going to get a different copy of the disc and see if that makes any difference. But thanks for all of your suggestions...you've been very helpful!!

It does sound like a problematic disc. There is no RCE protection no the Pianist, so thats not the problem, and the new DVD Shrink 3.0 beta 5 handles RCE now anyway. I guess a dodgy disc to be the cause.

are you creating your own folder to rip all of the disc files with decrypter or are you letting it use the one that it creates on its own??

You should try using the folder that decrypter makes for you. I was using my own for a while and had problems, but I tried it the other way and it seems to work a lot better. The folder it creates should not be too hard to find, although definetly not as convenient as creating your own.
