I have been trying to work out a problem that I have with copying DVD's using DVD Shrink & Nero. I started with the File Allocation Error and corrected that following some advice I had found in the forums. Now I am getting the Burn Error message. I have tried everything that I could find in the forums, such as making sure that Nero is current, checking the DMA, ASPI, Firmware and ATA/ATAPI Controller drivers and more. Still no luck at this point.
I am hoping to get this worked out, so I am hoping someone may be able to find an issue I've not worked out yet. Here is the report that comes up with the Burn Error message. Thanks in advance.

Your burner is in PIO mode so you'll need to get it back in DMA mode.
Right click on my computer. Go to properties then hardware then device manager.
Click the + next to ata/atapi ide controller.
Right click on the secondary ide channel and pick uninstall.
Now reboot - windows should put the drive back in DMA mode.
Do the same thing for primary ide chanell - one of your hard drives looks like it's in PIO mode also.
CMC discs - not the best. Trying better discs would be a good idea too - like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim.
Roxio is installed also or at least a Roxio driver. Has been known to conflict w/ Nero at times. If the above doesn't do it then get rid of Roxio (uninstall) & run the zap tool.

Thanks for the help.
When I go to the menu to turn on the DMA, I can't seem to make it turn off the PIO.
On the menu, I have a "device 0" and a "device 1". As for "device 0", Under the "Device Type" selection, it is set on "Auto Detection" and there is no other option. Under "Transfer Mode", there are two options in the menu, which are "PIO Only" and "DMA if available". I have it set on the "DMA if available" option, but in the "Current Transfer Mode", it's showing "PIO Mode" and I can't change that.
"device 1" is running on "Ultra DMA Mode 2". Is there a way for me to make the "device 0" go to DMA other than this, as it is currently not allowing me to do so.
I was a little worried about deleting either of the "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers", so I just tried to disable them first so that I could reverse it if the effects were undesirable. If I have the "Primary IDE Channel" or "Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 27DF" set to disabled, the machine can not detect either of the DVD drives, so I have had to go back and enable them. I would suspect that uninstalling them would result in the same effect.
I also used the RoxioZap too. I had Roxio ECC6 installed and had to remove it due to a conflict it was having with Windows Media Center a while back. I guess that there where some residual files still lurking around, so this seems to have wiped them out, although it didn't help with this issue.
I knew that the media was not the greatest, but I had copied about 60 DVD's about 6 months ago with the same stuff and had zero problems, so I figured the problem probably lay elsewhere. However, it seems like the CMC media is the root problem for a lot of people, so I am going to look over the recommended media thread and buy something from that list and see if that makes a difference. It justs seems like if it worked before, it would work now, but maybe not.

Yeah, the problem with Memorex is they are manufactured by different manufacturs so that could be why one batch worked fine and the new ones didn't.
Also did u look at the guide i provide for the dma issue, it is ok to uninstall the drivers, becuz when u restart ur PC they will be installed again, making them change back to DMA.
Do u have DVDFab?
U can also try resetting the DMA with that program
U hit the star button(left of the ? button) select Common settings,
then hit the reset dma button.

Okay, I went out and bought a couple different types of DVD+R media using the "Nice List of DVD Media" from the media portion of the forum. I wanted to get Verbatim, so I went to Wal-Mart because it was on their webpage, but unfortunately, they did not have it at the store, and most of what they had was stuff I've read to stay away from.
At first, I tried some Maxell DVD+R, but it turns out it was the CMC MAG junk too. My 2nd try was the Memorex DVD+R. Seems like most people don't like Memorex on here, but this particular one was on the list as being good. The one on the list is RICOHJPNR01, and what I bought is RICHOJPNR03, so I am assuming that there are equally as good since they are the same manufactuer, or am I mistaken?
Either way, even the the RICHOJPNR03 discs, I have exactly the same problem.
I just cannot seem to make my drive go to DMA, as I had mentioned in my last post. Is this something to do with this particular drive? If I were to buy an external burner to use, would this likely fix my problem that I am having. It's getting quite frustrating at this point. Or unless there is another way to make the system put that drive on DMA, I am thinking that that is where my problem is.
I will include my lastest Burn Error message just in case someone wants to look over it again to see if there may be another cause of this issue. What do you think I should do at this point. Thanks much for the assistance.

Ur burner and HDD are in PIO mode, this is more than likely the problem,

Sorry about that. I did overlook your last post.
I've been working on this issue all morning, and still no luck. I was able to get the DVD-ROM drive to return to the DMA setting by editing the registry as you had listed in the guides. Still no luck on the Hard Drive however, including using the DVDFab reset button. I looked over the Western Digital webpage and it says to do the same thing I've been told to do here. Both device 0 & 1 are showing that they are on the DMA 2, but when I have the burn error, it's showing that the one hard drive is not on DMA.
It may be worth pointing out that this HD is a 2nd HD and not the one my operating system or the files being backed-up are located. Does it still matter that it's not DMA even though it's not being used in this process?
I started having the "Out of Memory" problem when I made some of the changes you recommended. I knew that was not really possible since I have 4 GB RAM on this machine, but using the forums, I found the fix for that too.
I've tried pretty much everything I could find on the forums and in the guides, including uninstalling the IDE ATA/ATAPI drivers, the DVD drivers and the Hard Drive drivers, but still, same problem each time. I just can't seem to find a reason for that one hard drive to not run in the DMA mode. Is it possible to edit the registry for the HD, as I had to do for the DVD-ROM? Just don't know if there is much more I can do without just taking the drive out of the system all together, which I'm really not too interested in doing.
Any last thoughts? I appreciate all of the help. Thanks

Below is my canned response to DMA PIO problems. It's simple, but you've got to do the uninstall sometimes to get the drives kicked back into DMA. If it's in Ultra DMA that's okay, it is DMA afterall.
Check in Device Manager to see if DMA or PIO is on. The Secondary channel usually has the optical drives and the hard drives are on the Primary. Double click the channel and look in Advanced Settings or right click the desired channel and select Properies and look under the Advanced Settings tab. Note current transfer mode. Transfer Mode: is the setting that's desired, not necessarily what the drive is in, that's the Current Transfer Mode. SATA doesn't use DMA.
#I is the Control Panel. Follow I, II, III. Hard drives on Primary Channel and optical drives on Secondary Channel. Uninstall and reboot to kick drives back into DMA on. After Reboot check to make sure DMA is on. If problems persist, check IDE cables, drives and mobo.

This is the more important one for getting the DMA on, cuz that is why u r having trouble burning.
Is ur burner in Ultra DMA mode 2 or PIO mode in the transfer mode in the device manager.
maybe if u post some screen shots that would help us.
Also one thing u can try is replacing the IDE cable.

It's a burner. The Secondary IDE on the top of the window should have been a giveaway. Optical drives are normally on the Secondary channel and in this case it was. When I build I set things up according to standard convention.

What brand and model mobo are you using? Is it a factory or custom PC? If the optical drives are on the Primary, what's on the Secondary? I'm glad I hedged my comment with standard convention. Having optical drives on a Primary Channel isn't the regular way of doing things.

I forgot to mention, I get Ultra DMA Mode 6 for both Primary and Secondary Channels. So the Advanced Settings window appears the same for both. Other than knowing where the drives are, the readings would tell little about which drive it is.

On my last post, I forgot to add a recent burn error log report showing that I was able to get the DVD burner on DMA setting, which I will add at the bottom of this post. In the Device Manager, one thing I have noticed as a key difference from the screen shots that I keep seeing everywhere is that I do not have a Secondary IDE Channel, just the Primary.
PacMan777 mentioned in his post that SATA does not use DMA, so that could be the problem, as both of my HDD's are SATA. However, my main drive is showing in the error report that the DMA is on, but my 2nd HDD is off?
I had already uninstalled both of the ATA/ATAPI Controllers as you have instructed, as well as both of my DVD Drives and the 2nd Hard Drive drivers in addition, and let Windows reinstall them at start up. I also updated my Direct Memory Access Controller under the System Devices expandable menu.
Here are a few screenshots from my system....
You can see in this first ATA/ATAPI controller, there is not a Advanced Settings tab to select from, not sure if that is normal.
Here is my latest burn error log. I appreciate you guys taking the time to help me out. Thanks again.

My past experience with RICOHJPN media has been good, but in your case I'm wondering.

Write error
The errors seem to indicate a media error. The easiest way to check this out would be to use some Sony +R or Verbatim to eliminate the possibility.

I noticed you're using an ASPI layer. Did you check it with aspichk.exe after installing it? If you didn't use ForceASPI, you could have a bad install.

If you have no specific need for an ASPI layer, it isn't going to fix anything. I've been using XP and like many others, I've not needed ASPI added to XP.
Do you have any Sonic or Roxio programs on your computer and/or any batch writing programs such as Drag to Disc or InCD in Nero?

i built my PC, it was a while ago though,
MOBO is a DFI LanParty pro875B,
i have 2 burners and 2 internal HDD,
i have both my HDD hooked up with SATA
My MoBo has 2 primary IDE's and 2 secondaries
so i got my HDD w/OS on a primary and my main burner on the other primary.
and i know my MoBo is not the same as most of the others.

Your board was a good P4 board in it's day with AGP graphics, but that's a bit dated now. It had more bells and whistles than some boards, but still not that different. The extra IDE connectors you have were intended for RAID use. If your configuration works for you, there's no need to change it at this late date. However, most builders put the optical drives on the Secondary Channel. If you look in manufactured PCs, you'll see the same convention used. I've seen people with a crippled secondary put an optical on the Primary-Slave to keep from buying a new board. So, it's not unheard of having an optical drive on a Primary. It's just not the regular configuration, if nothing is wrong with the Secondary. It's your PC, do whatever works and makes you happy.

yeah, the 2 raid ide's can't be hooked up to optical drives only HDD's, so thats why they are hooked up to the primary and secondary ide's.
yeah, like i said it was a long time ago, and
it was all top of the line stuff when i bought it but to no avil a month later there was something better out, but thats how it is with computer stuff.
i just haven't got around to building a newer setup yet, probably cuz i have been extremely happy with my setup(p4 w/HT,1GB ram) as it performs very well.

How you configure your system is your business, but there's an accepted convention that most builders use. If the Secondary Channel is in good condition, then the master and slave positions of the Secondary IDE cable are used for the optical drives. Your using SATA allowed the Primary IDE connector to be free, many people used ATA drives, which would have prevented a similar configuration to yours. You can mix and match to get things done that will work, but as I mentioned, there's usually an accepted convention for doing things. Not saying they have to be done that way. It keeps everyone on the same page though if those conventions are followed.
P4s work. It's just the newer CPUs are faster and better for multitasking. I have a newer dual core, but I also have an older P4. For most tasks the P4 is okay. Any tasks that require more speed I prefer doing on the newer PC, like encoding video.

I realize you can't hook optical drives to a RAID connector. Never said you could. The normal configuration for what you have is the SATA drives on the SATA connectors and both the optical drives on the Secondary IDE, one at master and one at slave. I'm reasonably sure that it didn't say you needed to hook one of your optical drives up on the Primary. All I'm saying is that most people do things by convention so there will be uniformity. If you decide to go another way, that's your business. Some people feel they need four burners, so they go with 2 burners on the Primary and 2 on the Secondary and use SATA for the HDs.

From the picture of your board, IDE 1 and 2 are located about the middle of the board beside the RAM slots with IDE 1 (Primary) located to the outer edge.
Here's what the lanparty guide has to say. They use the same convention I was describing.

That was for installing IDE drives without SATA. You'd hook up the HDs on 1 and the opticals on 2, since most people don't mix drives on the same channel unless they have to.
