I have searched the web and the forums but no better off yet.

While trying to use DVD shrink on a DVD the error:

Failed to read from file - The reason is: The maximum number of secrets that may be stored in a single system has been exceeded.

I searched the web and found this link:http://www.inventec.ch/chdh/notes/2.htm

But not too sure what the programs do as there appears to be no instructions and I have found very little on the web.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Confusing Win2K error message when trying to copy *.VOB files from a DVD

Symptom: While trying to copy *.VOB files from a DVD drive, the following error message appears: "The maximum number of secrets that may be stored in a single system has been exceeded." (Error code 1381 / ERROR_TOO_MANY_SECRETS). Microsoft comment: "The length and number of secrets is limited to satisfy United States State Department export restrictions."
(MS-DOS programs get error code 5 (Access Denied) when trying to open the file).

Software: Windows 2000 SP2.

Cause: Win2K displays this message when a program tries to open an encrypted *.VOB file from a DVD and the DVD drive is not "authenticated". The error does not appear for non-encrypted *.VOB files.

Solution: Use a software DVD player to "authenticate" the drive

Sounds like a Operating System problem more so than a DVD Shrink problem .
If you're able I'd highly suggest getting WinXP!
Have you tried playing through a software DVD Player like PowerDVD or WinDVD etc (as suggested on that problem page) ?

P.S. I changed the spelling of Symtom to Symptom as it should be. Also I like the way that in the text on problem page it states

I'm afraid there are a few discs that will refuse to rip no matter what software you use, either as in this case some of it is encrypted or for other reasons, possibly in attempts being made to stop piracy. Of about fifty or so discs I've tried to back up only two have refused to rip completely. It's something you just have to accept.

Bugeye,
Let's not give up that quickly there good guy ?
Let?s first use ?Open Disk? then,
Reboot the computer so that you are working with a clean slate.
If still not working -
What DVD Shrink version are you using ?
If 3.0 - uninstall it right now, reason still unresolved issues (minor bugs to iron out)-
Reinstall DVD Shrink 2.3. Try to rip with that - make sure you are within the size limitations. I like to uncheck all foreign languages and set compression levels at 10 (45%) for Menus and Extras. Even if your movie is small enough to fit under 4400MB, I like to at least compress the whole thing at level #1. ? I don?t know why but it seems to work better that way -
Try Using DVD Xcopy Xpress
Then, if it?s still not working you can consult Forum about troubles with that particular Movie title ?
Good Luck,
?P?

Maybe try DVD2One instead...

[I prefer it to DVD Shrink personally & I have never had a cyclic redundancy error using DVD2One]

: )

Sorted - it sis to do with the region locking of the DVD player. Now that I have used the appropriate firmware to remove the region setting form the player it now works fine.

*** Thanks for all your help......

Bugeye,
Glad to hear you found the problem. I just got in and saw that you were still working on it.
As Discmania noted in his reply there are a very few discs that refuse to be copied - mostly ones by Disney.
A suggestion for next time, if there is a next time - let us know what movie you are backing up, it's truly a lot of help.

The region code for your DVD drive needs to be set to the same region code as your DVD, to clear this problem. Or, you can hack your DVD Drive to make it region free, or you might be able to use something like DVD RegionFree 3.0 software (as claimed by the software site, haven't tried it myself yet).

Bugeye,
Just got your message last night while trying to backup a DVD - "Six Million Dollar Man, First 3 episodes" - took a while but I found that if I started the movie, then clicked "open Disk" it would begin analyzing - it stopped 1/2 of the way through so I closed DVD Shrink then opened it and started again and it went the full way -
Give it a try if you get that error message again -
Pete
