PS2 games cause black screen on PS3

Anyone have this problem? Ive read a few threads on other forums about it but I havent found a fix. My PS3 works perfectly on PS3 games and BD/DVD but whenever I insert a PS2 game it just gives me a black screen and I have to restart the machine. I have a Panasonic 37" HDTV in 1080i and Im using a HDMI cable. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

dont use the HDMI cable, PS2 games can't run at 1080i

thanks for the idea stildeath but that didnt help. I thought it would be it didnt.

I did call Sony on the problem and they didnt have an answer. They want me to send it back for a refurbished replacement. I dont know if its worth the time and effort to play some old PS2 games.

My ps3 plays ps2 disks fine on a 1080i tv, it just downgrades it, I think you should send it back
