Great tutorial. I am assuming that the wireless will work when it is actually installed.

I am at 63% right now on the install.

A good tip to use for killing processes, when you go to system monitor, go to processes and do select all. Then go to edit and select kill processes; it will be a lot faster for getting rid of the processes.

Hi, I have installed Ubuntu to my ps3 hdd.
It loads up fine (but slowly)
I too can not get wireless connection, it picks up the wired device but no wireless. Is this some sort of Bug with Ubuntu.
This needs sorting out.

Also this thread need to be stickied.

Yeah, you can set the default to ps3 os...but mine automatically does that when i type in the boot-game-os at the kboot. So, i have to go to run other os as default to get back into it.

They havent stickied it as Ubuntu does not support the PS3 wireless out of the box i would guess.

Sorry everyone for not replying earliar. I was gone from the forum for about a week.

I see a lot of people are wondering how to get wiresless.. ok well its kinda of confusing.

Ok i will explain the basics.

I have 2 routers. I got one hooked into my modem while my PS3 is hooked into the other one. The one hooked into the modem is what provides the internet to the one hooked into my PS3. So on Ubuntu it displays as a wired internet connection but it isn't. Its basically a network bridge i guess its called.

Well i do believe they are working on a patch like the one released for YDL to simply use the built in PS3 Wi-Fi.

I also heard if you type in this code into the Ubuntu terminal it will patch the system to allow the wireless built in the PS3 to be used. Thats what someone said on another forum.

Sorry if im not much help i guess ill have to edit some stuff because the FAQ is really from what i have experienced so far.

It does support wi-fi but requires some procedure. Also, it does display on full screen mode, it adgust to your TV to fit the screen.

Yes. Insert the Ubuntu PS3 disc before entering the Kboot menu.

Type in boot-game-os to return to your PS3.

Then, shut your PS3 down and insert the Ubuntu PS3 CD.

Once the disc is in your PS3, go to the Other OS (Kboot Menu) and hit enter on your keyboard. Don't insert the disc at the Kboot menu or else it will not detect it.

It should say something about Kernal then switch to a new screen.

Once your onto the Ubuntu desktop, there is a install icon which you use to install it on your PS3 hardrive for much faster load times.

Hope this helps.

STEP-BY-STEP.

1. Type in boot-game-os in the Kboot menu. To return to the PS3 menu.
2. Insert the PS3 Ubuntu CD in your PS3 menu.
3. Go to the Kboot menu with the CD inserted.
4. Hit enter.
Okay, how exactly do i install this? Like i had to do before do i just type in install text at the Kboot menu, is this practicly the same installation as YDL? Oh, im basically switching just for the WIFI conncection. Thanks In Advance.
No. You burn the CD listed in the guide while in Kboot hit enter, and then install from the Ubuntu desktop. Its runs off the CD but is very slow until you actually install it. You'll know what i mean once you get there.[/quote]I tried that exactly as you described, (even inserting the disc while PS3 is off) but I still get the same error message. What do you suggest?

EDIT:

NEvermind. I discovered that I neglected to unpack the ISO before I burned the CD.

So, everyone make sure you unpack the files first. :D

I know where you live...

Thats pretty much what i said. What do you mean by "unpack" the files. You just burn the .iso to a disc.

Funny thing about that is, I did. Just the iso. But it didnt work, so, took all the files out of the ISO and and burned them. Then it worked.

On a side note, when I try to install it, during the partitioning phase, the installer is constantly telling me I havent chosen a root filesystem (which I have.)

You wouldnt happen to know about that? I think I posted a topic on it actually..

Just select the 10.7 GB drive from the list, if it comes up with a message, just click ok, it should work from there.

Strange that burning the ISO didn't work for you, works for me everytime.

It is extremely slow on the "Live CD" so once you get it installed it is much faster.
