Hi Great Guide!
my question: should I create a separated partition for ubuntu? If yes, how many gb you would allocate to the OS generally? 10GB? 20GB?

Whatever the PS3 will make i think it is 10.7 GB.

Thanks for the guide! If I hadn't read this guide I think I would've been stuck on the kboot menu as it wasn't reading the disc.
One question though. Does anyone know where I can get any PPC apps for Linux, debian packs or tarballs. Right now I'm stuck with a default install of Ubuntu and I want to start adding apps to use to pass time. Thanks again!

hwy guys i got a problem here...i press install in the linux program and after a while i went to a spot saying (Prepare disk space-u could press guided use entire disk or manual...i press guided...and then pop op that failed to partition the selected disk...then i press manualthen i went to a screen that said prepare partition already standing there /dev/sda...i just press forward and popsop this no root file system..please correct this from the partition menu...anybody can help me here plz..

1. Turn on your PS3 and press the Playstation Button?
2. Once your controller is connected go to the settings menu go to step 3.
3. Select system settings.
4. Go down until you reach "Format Utility"
5. Format your disk and give ATLEAST 10gb to linux (I suggest giving PS3 10gb and rest to linux/other os though).
NOTE: What we have done above will completely remove EVERYTHING from your PS3 (you will still have PS3 menu xmb etc etc... just your files go away)
6. You need to download the .iso image for your installation. It is 693765kb so may take a while. Download here http://www.badongo.com/file/3552637
7. Burn the CD to a disk with software like Nero, Roxio or other software. The CD must be burnt at 8X (400kb/ps) Or as low as your burner will go, this is vital to make sure there are not any corruptions in the install.
8. Once this has burn you are ready to leave the room and go to your PS3.
9. Put the CD in your PS3 and click "install other os" it should detect a file and install it. If sometimes goes wrong, retry the above steps!
Note: Leave the disk in the slot unless told to eject it.
10. Now that you have got through that, it is time to restart. Select "default system" and then select "other OS" let it boot into the other os.
11. Once loaded... it should come up saying something along the lines of: PS3 Kboot Loader. Default selection is "live" If unsure press enter.
12. Just press enter, this will boot you into the live CD.
13. Now you have a few minutes on your hand. Get some food, make a coffee... and TAKE YOUR TIME. It can takes forever to boot into the live cd.
14. Once it has loaded and you can see the icons on the desktop. Follow these instructions:
Go to system, then to administrations and then to services.
Uncheck everything except the CPU frequency manager ,Graphical login manager (gdm) and System communication bus.
Go to System, Administration, System Monitor. And go to the "processes tab"
Select the top process, the scroll down and hold shift once at the bottom, holding shift.. right click the bottom one and press KILL.
Everything should go blank, and then it will load up again.
15. Now go to install (double click only once, it takes a while to start up!!)
NOTE:If you can see the bottom of the install space where it says "next or continue" you have great resolution, if you dont... you are like me!
16. Select your language, keyboard and timezone all by common sense. (If you cant see the "continue" button just press next!"
17. Once you arrive at the partitions section, you need to choose the drive that you dedicated for linux. It will show 2, one labled flash 5 and one other. Select the other 1, it should be around 10.7gb if you chose "dedicate 10gb to linux" (the correct one should already be selected)
NOTE: A box may come up saying something about booting, and you can continue or go back. CONTINUE!!
18. Press enter, or click continue.
19. At the next screen, enter your name, password, username, what you want your computer to be called (mine is PS3-desktop) etc etc.
20. Click next.
21. Once you get to the summary just click confirm or enter if you cant see a confirm button, press enter again.
22. Ubuntu will eventually come up with a message saying its installed. This is good!
23. Take the CD out and retstart.
24. When you boot up and get to the KBOOT screen (black screen with text) press enter.
25. Ubuntu will load much quicker now.
NOTE: Ubuntu CAN recognise your wireless access point!!
NOTE: It can print to most printers (get linux drivers from google)
NOTE: It works GREAT on SDTV (better than YDL) but some boxes you cant see the buttons, just press enter or the X button.

Yap. I'm running in 1024x768 so I can see everything unlike PS2 Linux where you had to have a monitor to change the resolution.
Does anyone get a little hitch every half an hour or so? It lasts about 10 seconds where everything is extremely slow, to the point where you almost can't move the mouse. Also I'm going to get an HDMI cord finally and connect the PS3 to my monitor. Hopefully it'll look as crisp and my PC.

Just select the guided 10.7 GB thing, and when that thing pops up just click ok, don't click manual, should work from there.

my bad didnt check....hey how do i go back from ubuntu to ps3?i know i gotta write boot-game-os...but were do i write that when im in the program already?...sorry once again about that double posting i will be more carefully next time...

Turn off ur ps3.
Turn it on.
When a black screen appears with white writing type in:
boot-game-os
and press enter!
With some installing of tools this can also be done in terminal I THINK.

i have an "SDTV" and i was wondering if you could be able to get rid of the black bar around the edge on the screen. It is really, really, really annoying because I cannot see important things!!

I don't know how to troubleshoot this black border problem. I got an HDMI cable just yesterday to connect my PS3 to my monitor and it works flawlessly, my SDTV 27" has no borders at all, my HDTV 52" also has no borders with the component cables or HDMI cables.
Also, vinny13, it's not that complicated. I use it on my PC almost everyday along side Windows XP and I'm starting to prefer using Linux. Just follow the instructions at peak perfection and you'll get Linux running. Also it's not very different and it's free! You still get all the accessories and office applications you get in Windows and OS X and with a little tweaking you can make it look as good if not better than both the $$$ OS's.

Well really you can't do a whole lot new over any other OS, since its on PS3, you can't do anything that is 3D since Sony doesn't allow 3D applications to be used with Linux (yet). But with Ubuntu you can use Wine and install anything from Windows on it. The 1 reason i use the Linux OS, is because not that many people are using them and there are virtually no viruses. Unlike Windows, its very hard to create a file that can modify the Linux operating system. So stuff like spyware and adware is virtually non-exsistant on Ubuntu.

Is it easy to use? Someone told me that you have to do all ths coding or w.e. to run things and to shut it down, just simple commands like that. Is that true?
I'm not really good with that kind of stuff...

To shutdown is as easy as Windows, to restart is as easy as Windows. Whoever told you that shutting down was that complicated must've been using CPM (oldest OS I've ever known, dates back to 1979). Yes you can shutdown using terminal codes and such but it's been simplified so don't worry. In fact, Ubuntu is easier to install than previous versions of Windows like XP, 2000 and older ones (vista finally made it simplified).
In fact, to install software such as Wine (emulator used to run Windows apps on Linux) Ubuntu has a software manager called "Synaptics Package Manager" which is as easy as using a P2P software such as Limewire. You just type what you want, wine in our case, and you get a bunch of results. If the name seems complicated (such as libwine, libwine_dev, wine_core, etc...) just read the description.
Just wait a couple of years and Linux will be the OS of choice. Also you can't run many Linux apps on it because the PS3 uses PPC architecture while a PC uses x86 which is the architecture used to run almost all apps/games on any OS.
