Can you be a little more specific as to what doesn't work? Such as the resolution not showing up as an option, not being able to change....
And a fix for the black border:
Open Terminal by going to Applications --> Accessories --> Terminal. Then in terminal type:
xvidtune
Then mess around with some of the options such as "Up", "Down"... to stretch your screen just a little to get rid of the border(s). It won't look too ugly with it stretched as you won't need to stretch much.

I'm having trouble installing.
Im stuck here
I can't geet it to start up. here is what it says
Ubuntu Ps3 KBoot Loader.
No defualt rootfs was found, or one was found and it didn't containg a message = congig file.
If no rootfs was found. you can enter the shell here with 'sh'. Exiting will return you to this promt. In the shell you can mount your rootfs as
/mnt/root/.
Reasons this may have happened include:
-No drive with a rootfs was actually found.
-your rootfs does not have the correct volume label of "/"
-Your rootfs is corrupt (use the rescue cd to fix this).
Kboot:_
NinReznor said,
"so you've already installed ubuntu right? if so then at kboot type:
/boot/vmlinux initrd=/boot/initrd.img root=/dev/sda1
this should make it boot up then when it has open a terminal and type
sudo sed -e 's/sdd1/sda1/' -i /etc/kboot.conf
once thats opened edit the kboot.conf file so it looks like this
message=/etc/kboot.msg
default=linux
timeout=100
linux='/boot/vmlinux initrd=/boot/initrd.img root=/dev/sda1 quiet splash'
that way you wont have to type the first string everytime in kboot."
this didn't help me. maybe im doing something wrong?

Originally posted by brifa: found this: 1. Turn on your PS3 and press the Playstation Button? 2. Once your controller is connected go to the settings menu go to step 3. 3. Select system settings. 4. Go down until you reach "Format Utility" 5. Format your disk and give ATLEAST 10gb to linux (I suggest giving PS3 10gb and rest to linux/other os though).
NOTE: What we have done above will completely remove EVERYTHING from your PS3 (you will still have PS3 menu xmb etc etc... just your files go away)
6. You need to download the .iso image for your installation. It is 693765kb so may take a while. Download here http://www.badongo.com/file/3552637
7. Burn the CD to a disk with software like Nero, Roxio or other software. The CD must be burnt at 8X (400kb/ps) Or as low as your burner will go, this is vital to make sure there are not any corruptions in the install.
8. Once this has burn you are ready to leave the room and go to your PS3.
9. Put the CD in your PS3 and click "install other os" it should detect a file and install it. If sometimes goes wrong, retry the above steps!
Note: Leave the disk in the slot unless told to eject it.
10. Now that you have got through that, it is time to restart. Select "default system" and then select "other OS" let it boot into the other os.
11. Once loaded... it should come up saying something along the lines of: PS3 Kboot Loader. Default selection is "live" If unsure press enter.
12. Just press enter, this will boot you into the live CD.
13. Now you have a few minutes on your hand. Get some food, make a coffee... and TAKE YOUR TIME. It can takes forever to boot into the live cd.
14. Once it has loaded and you can see the icons on the desktop. Follow these instructions:
Go to system, then to administrations and then to services. Uncheck everything except the CPU frequency manager ,Graphical login manager (gdm) and System communication bus. Go to System, Administration, System Monitor. And go to the "processes tab" Select the top process, the scroll down and hold shift once at the bottom, holding shift.. right click the bottom one and press KILL.
Everything should go blank, and then it will load up again.
15. Now go to install (double click only once, it takes a while to start up!!)
NOTE:If you can see the bottom of the install space where it says "next or continue" you have great resolution, if you dont... you are like me!
16. Select your language, keyboard and timezone all by common sense. (If you cant see the "continue" button just press next!"
17. Once you arrive at the partitions section, you need to choose the drive that you dedicated for linux. It will show 2, one labled flash 5 and one other. Select the other 1, it should be around 10.7gb if you chose "dedicate 10gb to linux" (the correct one should already be selected)
NOTE: A box may come up saying something about booting, and you can continue or go back. CONTINUE!!
18. Press enter, or click continue.
19. At the next screen, enter your name, password, username, what you want your computer to be called (mine is PS3-desktop) etc etc.
20. Click next.
21. Once you get to the summary just click confirm or enter if you cant see a confirm button, press enter again.
22. Ubuntu will eventually come up with a message saying its installed. This is good!
23. Take the CD out and retstart.
24. When you boot up and get to the KBOOT screen (black screen with text) press enter.
25. Ubuntu will load much quicker now.
NOTE: Ubuntu CAN recognise your wireless access point!!
NOTE: It can print to most printers (get linux drivers from google)
NOTE: It works GREAT on SDTV (better than YDL) but some boxes you cant see the buttons, just press enter or the X button.
Enjoy!!
Where did you find that I really need to figure out how to connect to an access point. I can make it detect the wireless device if I use my D-link one but It never finds my access point and there isn't a scan button anywhere seriously!

Question on the display issue with SDTV. Would the type of cabling make a differenc, i'm currently using component and cannot get the resolution to change or therefresh rate from 30hz which is killing me? Any ideas guys, i'm about ready to give YDL a try? I've taken ownership of the file and edited it, saved and rebooted x...nothing. I'm doomed.

@sid_wrx: Remove all the other resolution still remaining (640x480, 800x600). If it still doesn't work I'll try and see what's going on.
BTW, is your install a fresh one?

By fresh I meant how long ago did you install it and how many other programs have you installed if any. Read the top of the page to fix the black border problem. It's one of my posts.
As for flash and such, I don't know and really want to be able to view them. It's not available for the PPC architecture which is what the PS3 uses.

Hey man, I seem to be having alot of similar problems to pple who have posted above. I did manage to get to 1024x720 but deleting al lthe lines and just having this resolution. It made things fit the screen... but not by alot. As i try bumping up the resolution nothing happens :S
as fo the xtunevid trick for getting rid of the borders, it says my video card is not supported:S you didn't get this i assume, i ordered a HDMI cable to see if it would solve the problem.
Thing i dont understand is why these are working for you but not the rest of us, could you maybe plz tell us what kind of wires/tv your using?

Hmmm... I've used it on a VGA cord (monitor) and an HDMI for my 52". I think I may have to look a little deeper to find out if I did some trick to make xvidtune run properly since it's been a long while until now that I've installed ubuntu. I'm really confuzzled on why it's not working for everyone and anyone who's tried. I'll look into it and sorry for the no go :(

@Narutodbz:
1. Of course it has enough power to render the effects but you need drivers for the video card to be able to take advantage of the power. Sony doesn't want to release them because their jerks!
2. Many people have that problem so search all over the place or do an ubuntu update through the update manager and see if that fixes it. Or download the new PS3 Ubuntu found on the site (7.04).
3. You'll need to format the PS3's drive again with the same settings (ex. 20GB Ubuntu-40GB PS3 OS) or change it.
@xjmyway:
I've been wondering where the progress on that is as well. It might add different solutions to changing resolutions and fixing th black border. I guess we'll have to wait for a response.

Thanks for this guide man, it will help people out alot.
Only question I have is, my Snes9x was running with sound but running slow. So I did the command:
Snes9x -ntsc (to run it at 60/FPS)
now the games run at 60fps, but I lost sound. Do you happen to know how to recover sound? I tried to use:
Snes9x -sound
but it does not bring the sound back.

Settle down man, no need for caps lock (that is considered rude ya know). Someone will help sooner or later, or you can try the obvious choice:
all you need to know is right here
Thats where I went when I needed to know something and did not want to wait around for a response.

It's Cool. Here I read this a few pages back, maybe it can help:
Quote:
I have custom compiled a 2.6.22 kernel that includes WiFi + UDF 2.5 support for use with Ubuntu, and created a .deb package for it. I have uploaded it to http://www.megaupload.com/?d=7EGHA1CU
There is an issue with using iwconfig in conjunction with this kernel, in that it doesn't appear to be showing the essid correctly, and reports a compilation version mismatch. I personally installed the wireless tools from the Gutsy install to get rid of the errors.
Bluetooth controllers *might* work in this. I haven't had a chance to try it. The controllers may or may not also work via usb. I really am not sure.
Usage Instructions:
1. Download the .deb to a known directory.
2. #>sudo dpkg -i linux-image-2.6.22-rc2_2.6.22-rc2-10.00.Custom_powerpc.deb
3. #>cd /boot
#>ls -al
Look in your /boot/ directory. You should have a symlink to the new kernel named vmlinux and an initrd ramdisk named initrd.img . Your old kernel should be at vmlinux.old and initrd.img.old .
4. #>sudo nano /etc/kboot.conf
Now, you should have an entry that points to vmlinux, as that's where your old kernel used to exist. Copy the line, so you have two identical entries. Then, rename one of them linux_old . Edit this line, so that the image name is vmlinux.old and the initrd is initrd.img.old . The other entry, you need to update the root. (this is where it might get a little tricky) If your old root was /dev/sda1, you need to point it to /dev/ps3da1. This is because the hard disk is now referred to as ps3da, instead of sda. In the end, this is what my kboot.conf looks like:
message=/etc/kboot.msg
default=linux
timeout=10
linux_old='/boot/vmlinux.old initrd=/boot/initrd.img.old root=/dev/sda1 video=ps3fb:mode:5'
linux='/boot/vmlinux initrd=/boot/initrd.img root=/dev/ps3da1 video=ps3fb:mode:5'
Also because thats for 1080p, you may have to adjust to your specific needs. This is how you do the adjustments:
Quote: # The following is an example kboot configuration file. Edit it
# to suit your needs before attempting to reboot your system or
# you may be unable to boot the new install.
# default: the default kernel label to boot should the user not make
# a selection. Uncomment the following line and set a default kernel label.
default=Gentoo
# timeout: number of seconds to wait for user input before the default
# kernel label is booted. Uncomment the following line and set timeout.
timeout=10
# The format from this point on is within a kernel label. At a minimum,
# you must pass the kernel and root device. The syntax is as follows:
#
# label='device:<path_to_kernel> initrd=device:<path_to_initrd> kernel_options'
#
# You should also pass the video options as well. An example of video
# options are as follows:
#
# 480i = ps3fb:mode:1
# 576i = ps3fb:mode:6
# 720p = ps3fb:mode:3
# 1080i = ps3fb:mode:4
# 1080p = ps3fb:mode:5
#
# You can review all possible video modes using the ps3videomode application
# provided by the ps3pfutils package. i.e. ps3videomode -v will display
# possibilities.

Phat PSP #2 - 3.40 OE-A
