Hey guys, i was having the scree and border issue a few days ago, until i picked up an HDMI cable!
Before that i had a third party component cable, and i was getting very crappy resolution and refresh rate. Switch to HDMI, the os automatically detected it and from the booting i was running at 420 P and the login screen was default at 720 P. Linux for me is now running smooth, no moer clutter, and loving it:D
Next is wifi, and hoping for flash and java support sometime soon, and for someone to get some RSX drivers so i wont have to you my computer at all.

I had to re-download the version on Ubuntu's site of 7.10 and reinstall over my 7.04 install. I backed everything up to a USB drive but I didn't have much extras installed.

Well I meant to say download the "special" version off of ubuntu's site for PS3. If that's not what you meant either, then sorry but I can't be of any help.

Hey when Ubuntu loads up on the system, when I click on Install, it makes it too big for the screen, so I can't make the window smaller, or click okay to go forward with the installation! I can't seem to fix this? Does anyone know what to do?!

Type in boot-game-os to return to your PS3.
Then, shut your PS3 down and insert the Ubuntu PS3 CD.
Once the disc is in your PS3, go to the Other OS (Kboot Menu) and hit enter on your keyboard. Don't insert the disc at the Kboot menu or else it will not detect it.
It should say something about Kernal then switch to a new screen.
Once your onto the Ubuntu desktop, there is a install icon which you use to install it on your PS3 hardrive for much faster load times.
Hope this helps.
STEP-BY-STEP.
1. Type in boot-game-os in the Kboot menu. To return to the PS3 menu.
2. Insert the PS3 Ubuntu CD in your PS3 menu.
3. Go to the Kboot menu with the CD inserted.
4. Hit enter.
i have the same problm & followed your steps but still getting the same message.
I've dloaded the 7.10 version (alternate cd)
- also tried this with 7.4 version (live cd) also same problem
- please let me know what am missing here. thanks.

Just hold down the power sensor/button for 5 seconds. It'll restart into game os and you can re-install from there.

There's a guide on PSUbuntu that shows you how to update you're kernel if you have FW 2.00+ and wifi is broken. You need to update the kernel for Ubuntu to make it work with wifi again.

i have found a way to get wifi working on the linux ubuntu 7.04 its fairly straightford follow the instructions!
22) How to get wireless in Ubuntu?
Paraphrasing from this.
i) download this file on a computer, put it on a usb key and copy it over onto your PS3. If you have a prefered way of transfering file then use that method.
ii) open a terminal and go to the directory where you put the file (cd /location/to/file/you/copied/over). If you just put it onto the desktop then "cd ~/Desktop" should do the trick
iii) run this command "sudo dpkg -i *.deb" and enter your password when prompted
iv) Go into /boot (cd /boot) and check to make sure that everything is there (ls -l). You should see that vmlinux is pointing to linux-image-2.6.22-rc2_2.6.22-rc2-10.00.Custom_powerpc or something like that.
v) Due to an issue with the updater trying to revert back to the default kernel run the following two commands: "sudo cp vmlinux vmlinux-wifi" and "sudo cp initrd.img initrd.img-wifi". That'll make a backup of the new kernel with a easily remembered name.
vi) Edit kboot.conf: you'll see a line there (assuming you haven't edited already) which looks like this:
linux='/boot/vmlinux initrd=/boot/initrd.img root=/dev/sda1 quiet splash'
change it so that it looks like this (changes are in red and VERY important... there's 2 in total)
linux='/boot/vmlinux-wifi initrd=/boot/initrd.img-wifi root=/dev/sda1 quiet splash'
vii) reboot the machine (sudo reboot)
If all goes well, then when the machine reboots, you'll have the new kernel running without any problems. If there is an issue then boot using "old" (or linux.old... can't remember) at the kboot prompt to boot into the default kernel and double check to make sure that everything is ok. Once you're booted using the new kernel and everything is working fine (as in you can login and get the screen working), then you can connect via wireless. In the top right corner there's a network icon, so right click that and go manual at which point the network settings screen will popup. Click on the wireless connection (first one) then properties, and make sure that the values there correspond with your network settings. Once that's done click the wireless connection and then activate. You should now be online.
