i Have seen a thread here about a guy wanting to use his ps3 on a monitor now here is a guide i found on the subject.
Quote: Okay firstly reason I'm making this thread is due to the fact many of us Game players need to experience Hd with the Ps3 and here the cheapest way for the highest quality you can get.
Being a student this worked for me brilliantly.
Lcd Hd-Tv's are expensive but you can view Tv on them aswell.
Lcd computer monitors can only view content through what is connected to the device.
So heres where the Trick comes in
Most modern devices have (HDMI) which is backwards compatible with (DVI).
So what you need is a good HDMI to DVI cable.
Okay so why use a computer monitor and what is good?
Computer monitor lets say 22" can be hundreds of dollars cheaper than a 22" HDTV.
Computer monitors have much higher resolutions and are automatically higher in quality.
And always make sure the monitor is HDCP equivalent to HD.
So I bought myself a Asus 22" Computer monitor widescreen.
Cost me $430 Au and a Tv that size would be between $800-$1300 Au CRAZY frankly....
I use the monitor just for gaming so what Specs are good.
Panel Size: 22.0" Wide Screen
True Resolution: WSXGA+ 1680 x 1050
Brightness (Max.): 300cd/㎡
Contrast Ratio (Max.): 700:1
Display Colors: 16.7 M
Response Time: 2ms (Gray to Gray)
HDCP: Yes
Response times not more than 5ms, 2ms is instant for me.
Then basically plug in and set up the Ps3 or Xbox settings. (xbox with a HDMI port only can be used for this.)
With my monitor Im able to view all the resolutions the Ps3 can chuck at me.
including 1080i and 1080p on a 22" Yes that equals amazing quality.
Obviously you can get larger than 22" but from 30" prices jump rather high ranging $1300 Au again. but then amazing resolutions can be reached such as 2560x1600 on a 30".
Smaller than 22" is not worth it and then you also wont reach 1080i and p maybe 720p.So 22" and up is a good start
Once completed you have this

Of course you can do more than just plug in your Ps3 but thats all I aim to do with mine and it works brilliantly.
For the people with huge 42inches etc this thread will not help you.
note these are based on australian prices, UK and USA prices will be a little bit cheaper ;)

I'm going to be trying this out when my other PS3 gets here on my Samsung 226BW. My TV is only 1080i and I am curious to see how good 1080p is going to be?...

my 42" westinghouse is considered a monitor. That's why you can pick them up for less than the other hdtv's

How is it considered a monitor?
Monitors are classified as monitors because they cant display tv signals but only the media that is hookep up to them.

How about sound? How are you able to get sound out of the PS3 with a HDMI to DVI setup?

For me it's easy, I have a Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro Sound Card that comes with a "break out box" that has an Optical In so all I have to do is tell the PS3 to output via that way....hell in a pinch I could use the stock RCA cables to an analog input on my box or even through my Video/Audion capture card! I am actually REALLY looking forward to this so I can try it out on my 5.1 Headset (via optical in of course).
Here's a pic

you can use the phono cables (red and white ones) if you have an amplifier or dvd connected to some speakers. or the optical cable if youve got one. just change the audio settings on the xmb
how much did that setup cost oner? looks sweet!
ive got about £200 set aside for a good quality surround setup. any ideas?

Thanks for the info :)
I just bought my ps3 with HDMI->dvi cable, but i don't think my monitor's HDCP compliant...more $ on top of the 1k i paid :(
Can any tell if this monitor's hdcp compliant?
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=3989140
It doesn't say, but I believe it's not. There's no way around this I take it? I have to buy a HDCP compliant monitor?

i' m using the same setup but it isn't working. The monitor just says not signal. Could it be the cable that is the problem.
The monitor is HP W2007 which is HDCP enabled and the cable is Asid Tech PlayStation 3 DVI To HDMI Cable.

it works for a regular (non-elite) 360 without HDMI as you can buy a vga cable (360 one) and then a vga-dvi adapter. but you'll only get 720p. i think its worth it rather than having to go out and buy an elite. it worked for me then my 360 died of three lights. but now i have a ps3 connected to my HDTV wit a HDMI to dvi cable. (cos my HDTV is old and HDMI hadn't come out when i got it). btw its 42"

It has no tuner in it. which is how you classify a moniter. My HDTV comes from a cable box thru HDMI.

What would I need for sound on my iMac? For video, I would get the DVI to HDMI converter cable. For audio, I'm not to sure. There's an "audio in/optical digital audio in port" on it that looks like a headphone jack. What cable would I need to buy?
And does the PS3 come with a HDMI cable?
**Does an iMac even support HDMI? I'm not sure where I'd read that... It does use an LCD screen...
