Well I have purchased a JAP console, and the one thing that bugs me is the X and O buttons have been switched so it gets annoying, even in the english games, the button have been switched. Is it possible to update with a English Firmware like you can on PSP's as I'm on 1.82, if I download the English Update to 1.90, will that fix the buttons?

even if it fixes the buttons i think it voids warrenty to use firmware not for the specific console.
But they all do sort of the same thing, and that is rearrange what you thought was real, and they remind you of the beauty of very simple things. You forget, because youre so busy going from a to z, that theres 24 letters in between... You turn on... tune in... and you drop out...

Well, all I'm asking is if it will work, as it is a JAP console, so I wouldn't have any warrenty on it anyway.

Can you open the controller and just re-wire the buttons?
-Isn't it great to wake up and not know what day it is?
-"Pull my finger" is one thing you'll never hear a leper say.

Whoops, I was thinking they were set up more like an arcade controller and not directly set up on the circuit board. Ignore my previous comment.

you cant swap the wires and there isnt any software that will allow you to change them. your only option is to just buy a new us or uk pad

Uhm, I don't think you guys get it, It's not the conroller, its the actual ps3 itself, Cuase it is on JAP firmware, O=X and X=O, If I used the controller on a US ps3, it be normal. What I'm asking is if the I can update the firmware using US firmware or UK like on the PSP but I have no clue how

if your ps3 hardware is different from that of the hardware from where the other firmware is from, it will cause problems. if not, that it should be ok. but do you really want to risk it?

upgrading the firmware with a u.s. one will not make a difference. 1.90 does not have anything in it for the buttons. the updates are just updates to the firmware.

accually it does. the buttons meanings are swapped in the different firmwares, and thats software-side. o=enter and x=cancel in japan. i never knew why.

You would have to download the update and put it on a flash drive, and then update from memory instead of internet.

Ok, well it's no use to me as of the moment cause I'm already on 1.90 JAP and I've been on that firmware for quite some time. Just waiting for a newer firmware so I can test this baby out. Although I really need a confirmed success of installing different region firmware on a ps3 as I really don't wanna brick my PS3. Also, if I successfuly update to UK firmware, will my PS3 able to play UK games then?

forget about it.
All the firmwares from all regions are exactly the same.
The thing coding for O and X buttons is NOT in the firmware, it's in some extra chip somewhere that you cannot reach, just like on PSP.
Later,

i dont think the x and the o are on some ship, im pretty sure its in the firmware. because my psp allows me to change which i want to use.
and each firmware i made for the hardware of a specific region, little subtleties might be there.

no, it's on another chip that contains the kernel region information as well. Not in the firmware. the flash1 space you use to alter X & O on PSP reads the region from this chip and sets the O & X behavior from there.
When you alter O & X on PSP, you're just overwriting the configuration file. Besides, we don't know how to do that on PS3 yet!

No they're all exactly the same, for PSP as well as PS3. Not once have the firmwares been different between regions.

Ok, I don't know what happened but I wanna make it clearer, I want ot update my PS3 to a UK firmware, so it will hhopefully change things:
- Let me play PAL PS2 games
- Let me play pal dvd's.
- Switch the X and O.
If I do install the firmware, will these things happen. I know you said things about on a different chipset for the configuration of the X and O but how the heck do you know that?
Update - I just came across a thread similar to mine if they can install US firmware on JAP ps3 and its been confirmed to work. So does that raise my chances with UK firmware?
