I'm trying to encode a movie w/shrink and at about 28% of the encoding process my computer shuts off. It does not happen with every movie but with the 300 and Disturbia. What do you guys think could be going on with this one?

I don't think Shrink can handle Disturbia by its lonesome - 300 should but since it's no longer updated for these that give you a problem rip w/ DVDFab HD Decrypter 1st then open those files in Shrink and you should be good.

DVDFab is still updated to handle the newer stuff.

Shrink is pretty cpu intensive.
Are you keeping up with the pc maintenance bit like - disc defrag, disc clean up, virus scans and registry cleaner?
When the last time you blew the dust out of the inside of the pc? Dust accumulation can cause heat issues and cause the pc to shutdown esp. w/ an intense app like Shrink.

normally once a week sometimes every two, uh i dont know about the registry thing i have no idea how to do that. sometimes it shuts off when i log off of aol too and IE7 will open and the close right away. i cant delete it or reinstall it. Ive run three virus scans this week and nothing. I use CA Anti-virus for the virus checks and spybot and ad-aware for crap i dont remember what they are called right now.

ok have you done a disc defrag? (start>all programs>accessories>system tools>disc defragmenter).

Here's a good free registry cleaner - ccleaner. Use the issues and cleaner options.

Here's a good free online scanner too - TrendMicro House Call.
May take awhile to scan - but finds and removes virus and such that other programs may not find.

Have you cleaned out the inside of pc lately? I'd open it up (turn the power off ) and blow it out with a can of compressed air.

Not a problem Everfalln
But you don't have to wait for the next paycheck - everything I listed or linked to is free - no $$ and good tools.

Give those a go first and if still having problems with the pc post back the specs like processor and memory. You can find this info by right clicking on my computer then picking properties. It's listed in the general tab.
Might need to run a check on the memory - there are free tools for that too.

I think most screwdrivers are not magnetized but then again I'm no expert on screwdrivers :) I just use what's available.
You can also use a vacuum cleaner hose to get some of the dust out - just don't have it on high suction :) and be careful again like the cards and motherboard.

ah okay well like an hour ago i exited my aol service and my computer shut down and when it restarted i got an error message, its the same message i get when i run dvd shrink and it shuts my comp down. now i click the button to see what the error report contains and then i click the butto to view the technical information.

Error Report Contents
The following files will be included in this error report:
C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\ WERc521.dir00\mini081407-01.dmp
C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\ WERc521.dir00\sysdata.xml

now its changed a bit since it first started happening it used to be WERad(d not sure if there was another d or not) but when i run dvd shrink i get it too. any ideas cause im not too computer technical i took a tech class but they stopped it cause students besides myself and 3 others quit coming.

Ok how'd you make out on the other maintenance stuff? Get all that done yet?
From what cccleaner cleaned up that's a step in the right direction.

What's the exact message windows gives when it shuts down - any codes?
The one you posted just shows where the log file was saved and I'd have a helluva time trying to read one of those.

How old is this pc? Anything change pc wise since these problems started happening?

Test the memory too - here's a free utility for that - MemTest

Don't worry about cleaning out the dust affecting your warranty - it won't and cleaning it out is a good thing.
All that dust causes a heat to build and since Shrink is pretty intense hence the pc shutting down. It was overheating.

What burn speed did you burn at? Media you are using? Sounds like it's a media compatibility issue w/ the player.

Yep disc wise - like are you using Sony +R 16x.

Check the burn speed down to 8x.

How about the make and model of the drive? Firmware up to date?

I have no idea about the drive, um the discs are TDK dvd+r, doesnt tell me the speed but 12x was the speed i always used so ill bump it down and see, with a top to print the dvd art on it. I guess the drive is stock. My computer is an E-machine t3256. this is taken off http://www.jewishworldreview.com/1104/kellner110504.asp

a 3.2 GHz AMD Athlon XP Processor, Microsoft Windows XP Home software, a 160GB hard drive, 512 Mbytes of DDR memory, and an 10/100 Integrated LAN port. The machine also includes a 48-speed CD-ROM drive, a DVD +/- RW drive as well as an 8-in-1 digital media manager, which reads Compact Flash memory cards, Microdrive hard drives, and various other digital media. And the T3256 includes an NVIDIA GeForce4(tm) MX integrated 64MB shared graphics chip and nForce(tm) 6-channel audio.

so i really dont know if the dvd-drive is even name brand and well without knowing the brand i cant tell you if the firmware is up to date or not

Ok TDK uses different manufacturers so try taking it down to 8x or 6x.
If that doesn't do the trick pick up some Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim or made in Japan Sony, Fuji or Maxell. Try burning those at high the rated speed - like rated 16x burn at 8x.

To find out the make and model double click on my computer then right click on the drive. Pick properties then click on the hardware tab. All drives included the hard drive will be listed here.
If you don't know which one is the burner just post them all - I should be able to pick it out.

@dusk77
Yeah those made in Japan Fuji's are getting very hard to find. They're actually made by Taiyo Yuden - reason they're so good :)
I mainly stick w/ buying the Taiyo's online at supermediastore.
