ps2 game on ps3 udp isuues?

hi guys,
i wanted to use my ps3 and pc online at the same time n since i haven't got a router i hooked them both up to the pc, so the connection looks like this.

Modem-->USB-->PC-->Ethernet-->PS3

i can connect to the web browser under Linux and the XMB, the playstation store and TVersity with this setup but when i try to play MGS3 online it give me an error:
UDP port check failed 518:2

i cant see what the problem is as i allowed the UDP and TCP ports on windows firewall that MGS3 uses.
Its a Scientific Atlanta 2100 modem and i am on Virgin/Blueyonder broadband btw.

i really cant be bothered to keep swapping the Ethernet cable every time i wanna go on the ps3 online n im flat broke so i cant afford a wireless router.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Have you enabled Internet Connection Sharing?

Are you using a crossover cable?

Can you access the Playstation Store or Web Browser on the PS3?

yes i enabled connection sharing, made a network bridge, opened ports on
the firewall.
and im in england so im guessing a crossover cable is an ethernet cable. so yes im using that. the setup is as follows:

Modem-->USB-->PC-->Ethernet/Crossover-->PS3

as i said before i can access all services web browser, store, and Media server.
The only problem im having is with MGS3 giving me a UDP Port check error when i try go online.

MGS3 is no longer online. The server was shut down due to low activity.

Not in england its not. i just checked the konami site and the server is up and running, and i was just playing like an hour ago having to swap the Ethernet cable to go online.
hasn't anybody got a solution to the UDP problem, there must be something I've missed?
