I read in another post that the blu-ray player of the PS3 cannot access all of the features of the latest Blu-ray releases. Is this true? Can somebody provide more information/details on what this means? Thanks.

I read it on this forum, in one of the HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray news threads. If this is true can anybody provide concrete examples, "title", "feature" etc. It could be someone from the HD-DVD camp spreading blasphemous rumors.

I read the opposite. I read that the ps3 is the best bluray palyer that money could buy considering the cheap for bluray price tag.

I read the same thing in S&V when the PS3 first came out too. Hopefully the guy who posted the new info will see this thread an explain himself.

I'm not the guy from the HD DVD camp you were referring to but he is correct. The PS3 as of this moment is not BD Video 1.1 Profile compliant. It is also not BD-Live compliant.

What does BD Video 1.0/1.1 and BD Live mean and what do these player profiles require?

BD Video 1.0 Profile - all current standalones and the PS3 are compliant:
64 KB of persistent memory required
no SD PiP decoding required
no secondary audio decoding required
no internet capability required

BD Video 1.1 Profile - no current players (not even the PS3) are compliant:
256 MB of persistent memory required
SD PiP decoding required
secondary audio decoding required
no internet capability required

BD Live 2.0 Profile - no current players (not even the PS3) are compliant:
1 GB of persistent memory required
SD PiP decoding required
secondary audio decoding required
internet capability required

There is hope in the BD camp that a future software upgrade will enable the PS3 to be at least 1.1 or even Live compliant.

Are there Video 1.1 compliant players that have been announced?

Yes - the Denon DVD-3800BDCI and the Denon DVD-2500BTC.

What releases have been announced that will need 1.1 compliance to access all features?

Disney has announced PiP features in Finding Nemo and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. It has also announced BD Live interactivity with National Treasure.

There is also word that once the 1.1 and BD Live players are more common Warner will re-release "300" on BluRay with all the PiP and internet enabled features that are now in the HD DVD version.

I'll be on the lookout for other announcements.

whoa. I guess thats just another reason for me to hold out on upgrading to a HD player. Sucks for those who bought the Blu-Ray at $1,000 since they are the videophiles who would probably care most about such details.

I don't think so. The people who buy those $1K players are the early adopters and diehard enthusiasts who have deep pockets and a constant need to upgrade. (There are a couple of them in these forums I think.) When they buy these early models I'm sure they realize that it's not going to be their last player purchase. They buy 2nd and 3rd gen players if they see reasons to upgrade. I bet there are more than a few of them who would like to get their hands on the $2000 Denon.

Matter of fact, I've already upgraded from a Toshiba HD-A1 HD DVD player to an HD-XA2 when I saw the very desirable features in the 2nd gen player.

As for those "extra features" I'm still not too sure about them. The PiP extras on the 300 HD DVD became tiresome after a while and the internet extras just didn't interest me at all.
